Pick one specific set, buy some trainer boxes, and boosters. Finish buying the individual cards you need. Two of every card has a battling rational too.

@@Xenoforge78Noctowl is goated after the full art promo komiya did for Stellar Crown, one of my personal favorites for sure. I recently started collecting again after a 20+ year hiatus where I only played the games. I just want to collect all of the versions of my favorite Pokemon that I think look cool 🙂 buying singles makes life so easy! Merry Christmas and thanks to Coop and Deep pocket monsters for getting me back into it and you for helping me understand how the new stuff works 👌🏼
My recent journey back into Pokemon is pretty funny I think: Picked up a set of 4 random packs for the first time since 2014 > pull an SIR from Paradox Rift > buy a few more PF packs > sister buys me a PF booster box for Christmas instead of the few packs I asked for (ty btw) > get myself another booster box > now 75% done with the Master Set so just gonna buy the singles to finish it out. Weird how life works :)
for me its all about the cards drawn by ken sugimori. even though my first holo was a base set charizard i pulled myself from a pack when i was about 10 (and i still have). i set a goal for myself, from the hundreds of cards sugimori drew, and then i picked the holos and non holos i like the most, and i'm happy to report that i'm basically 2/3 of the way from completing the list i created for it. with most of the expensive cards taken care of such as cd promo charizard, blaine's charizard, the blastoise cd promo, and the black star promo venusaur from the english card guide. of course, the grail for my collection would be the parent-and-child trophy card kangaskhan, but they're sooooo hard to see, so i've just kept it on my peripheral view whilst i collect the other cards on the list. i havent bought more than 10 booster packs in the last 5 years, because my budget wouldn't have liked it, as you say in the video. i've just kept steadily buying those singles i want for the collection and it's been working out great.
I like the art. Also, the nostalgia hits hard for me and takes me back to a really great time in my childhood when we all came together with our cards to enjoy not just the collection, but each other’s company.
I think one of the best approaches for those who don’t know where to start, is to come up with a collection identity (similar to goal). Creating an identity around your collection or even yourself can help you focus on your collecting goal and build a unique collection. Similar to Maxmaxcity that dude lives and breathes Bandai. Great vid as always!
When I was younger I had the complete set of base jungle and fossil before I quit playing Pokemon I had so much fun completing those sets back in 99 00
My collecting goal for the next year is to build English language versions of the nine Generations Start Decks that came out in Japan last month. I adore the idea of having a set of decks to represent the nine eras of Pokémon so far, and I'm hoping that building these will allow me to have an easy way to onboard friends and family into the card game.
Im close to a master crown zenith set with the full galarian gallery. I also focus on IRs and SIRs that i love the artwork of. My binders look like little art galleries! I may also begin focusing on a select few of my favorite pokemon.
In 1999 our six sons (now ages 25-36) and I started collecting mostly engrish Pokémon cards and placing them in binders. We did so because we already had an inkling about keeping our cards in az good condition az wuz possible back then but not with any other “goal” in mind. In the fall of 1999 I started a collection of all Pikachu cards in engrish along with a few Japanese Pikachu promo cards. 1999 also wuz the era when I started using eBay to purchase sealed Pikachu promo cards from Japanese sellers. So by spring of 2000 I had also completed the Base, Jungle & Fossil sets in engrish and Japanese because it wuz easy to purchase sealed Japanese booster boxes during deez early months. About 2015-16 I finally set the goal of obtaining ALL Pikachu cards in engrish and wuz already a massive collection. And in 2024 I have about 99% of the Pikachu cards printed in engrish including all reverse holos, jumbos, rares, promos, mini sets & cards tha feature Pikachu. It’s almost 2025 and now none of my sons want my collections! They don’t want “the hassle” of selling the cards regardless of the excellent condition of the cards My goals are stymied and I wonder wha to do next 🤔🤷🏽
That sounds incredible! Sounds like you have a lot in common with David Persin, whose kids also have no interest in his massive collection. It’s probably so overwhelming!
@@sleevenocardbehind I’ve considered different options like donating parts or all to “a worthy cause”, or breaking up the collections into their “marketable” parts for selling, or some combination. But nothing yet feels “fun” like it wuz when I had a clear vision/goal in mind.
I wanted the full set as a child back in 1999, might as well complete the set since it does not seem to be very expensive if I avoid the top dollar stuff.
I'm collecting Pokemon cards because of my dad. We did it together when they first released. They're nice memories I had of him and so my goal personal.
I sort of blend themes and specific pokemon. For example I like pikachu trainer cards/Red's pikachu but not just plain pikachu because it reminds me of watching the anime growing up and provides an emotional connection. I try to get eeveelutions. Also, I'm going to be making a collection based on what my pokemon team was for each of the video games. I'm also contemplating what I want to do about 151 which I find to be an awesome set, with so many great card arts.
I’m finishing my Sword & Shield Master set currently (have 17 regular cards and 63 Reverse Holos to go), the one set I’d gotten into enough some years back that I feel I should finish, plus all Togekiss cards. Nothing like collecting every card of one’s favourite mon! Especially if it’s one that never got huge favour from TPCi or fans, so there isn’t that many and they’re not dear at all. Attached the matching Togepi/Togetic cards for each set Togekiss comes from as well, to complete the evolutionary family and because they’re a cheap, small edition. Stretch goals include, in order: * Togepi and Togetic cards from Gens 2/3 (not a cheap proposition, hence having it separate). * Upgrading the Sword & Shield set to a Grandmaster by getting all the other variants (except Jumbos, primarily because there are signed Zacian and Zamazenta ones that only had 20 made - I’m nowhere near that bullish). * Reprints of Sword & Shield cards in other sets in the Gen 8 block. Debatable whether this falls under Grandmaster, but I have it mapped out in case I close in on finishing the Other Variants enough to consider it.
This explains why there is so much diversity in the community - it really is more complex than collectors vs investors. And important for us to reflect on which activities bring us joy rather than collecting broadly and blindly. Great analysis, as always!
I’ve started collecting recently and plan on completing the master set of the base set. Fortunately, I was given my cousins old binder many years ago which included various cards from the Original, Gym & Neo series. I only need 29 more cards in the base set, so I will slowly fill in the gaps. Maybe once I’m done, I will see what I’m missing in the other sets 🤷♂️ Enjoy the festive period 🎉
"Why are you collecting pokemon cards" Cause I like a certain set that I could never get in comparison in my childhood, and because I like a specific pokemon line. I have the new 151 set nearly complete. Except for the stupid ass expensive voltorb promos, the EB games charmander, and a stray reverse holo on some base cards, I have them all; the prize card dodrio and mew, the cosmos holos from costo, the pokemon center squirtle etc. I can't remember for how long I owned some of the original cards, but I can still recognize that old 3D ghastly and magnemite, the promo articuno, some of the original boys™. So, completing 151 and collecting every variant in a 4x4 binder gives me a sense of happiness that my younger self didn't get to keep. I'm also collecting 1 of every english Shinx/Luxio/Luxray in a yellow binder, because I love their evo line and how they look. Sure, some 'prerelease/staff/stamped' cards are a tad expensive, but it makes me happy when I add a new one. Not every card is Near Mint, or would get a PSA 10. The vaultx binder honestly may be worth more than its contents right now, but I'm still happy. It's a slow hobby that I feel no pressure to rush to complete, and every new addition just makes me happy.
Bro how did you know I love the claymation Dittos??? Anyway, I really enjoy that you’re challenge viewer to look internally and evaluate their goals with collecting. Great video! I’m currently working on NM copies of every Ninetales card ever.
I wouldn’t say the gambling aspect has anything to do with ethics. Gambling on its own has nothing to do with ethics. I think it would have been better to frame it as simply something that is possibly damaging instead of possibly unethical. Fantastic video, really love this channel. Edit: Wasn’t expecting a feature! Thank you that’s awesome. I just picked up 3 new 1st edition trainers: Master Ball, Fervor, and Blaine’s Gamble.
I collect these cards because A: I want to potentially grade and sell a few expensive ones to buy other things. B: I love partaking in competitive hobbies, and the Pokemon TCG is no different. I use some of my cards to build decks and hopefully win tournaments.
I just got the urge to collect again. Learned 151 was a thing that I missed out on. Went on a wild journey to every retailer and card shop in my area and couldn't fined any. Called one random shop and the guy said he had the premium collection in stock because he forgot he had it.
I'm just getting back into collecting Pokemon in the last 3 months (picked a rough time I know lol). This video is great for organizing my collecting goals in a market that is a hurricane right now lol
currently working on 151 master set +(minus the crazy expensive promos) and collecting all gyarados cards! Shining gyarados is my most favorite card of all time!
right now, im collecting every card of exeggcute. i find it super appealing to have so many arts of the same pokemon. I chose to start with exeggcute because its affordable compared to my other faves (mew 😔💸💸) and its much more interesting than a pokemon from a newer gen because i get to collect cards from so many eras. i also love that this collecting style allows me to appreciate even common cards, like my favorite card from my collection is a common aquapolis exeggcute. great video btw! it really helped me think about my pokemon goals for the long term
My collections are... - Pokedex with every variation (shiny, alt forme, gender, mega etc) - My perfect region (personal top 151 pokemon) - Shinji Kanda art - Tomokazu Komiya art - Psyduck and Ludicolo - Eeveelutions - Funskool - WOTC - Evolutions - 151 This way every new set has something for me, but I'm never in need of a great deal
Do it! Even if it just stays as a list it's fun to see what floats your boat. I'm strict with it, so you have to pick from the starter pokemon, have to have a basic bird line, a pikaclone, legendaries at the end etc. It's gotta feel like a region
Base Set for short term since all I need to get is some non-holo cards there. But in terms of passion, the Delta Species reverses I been picking up for a few years now everytime I saw one in the wild. The reverses back then were sometimes better than the rare slot and I miss it.
I'm collecting Japanese Art Rares (not SARs though). Awesome art at an awesome price (except for that dang magikarp). I intend on getting every AR as I think it would look so awesome in a binder just seeing the fantastic art one after the other. I just love the little stories that are told from the art e.g. AR kricketune on a park bench playing a song and all the other Pokémon gathered round listening. Simply awesome imo. Great video.
Merry Christmas, really good video! I recently got back into the TCG after not collecting since 2000. It’s rather overwhelming when each set comes out and you feel the need to collect them or buy a load of packs to get the chase cards. I bought a lot of 151 but still need the majority of the expensive cards. I don’t want to spend 000’s finishing it. I’m going to go after putting a collection together of my two favourite Pokemon, Eevee and Zapdos.
When it comes to buying, I usually buy the products which have nice promo cards and open the included packs for the thrill of ripping. I buy sealed products (displays) for profit and the singles I really like or which I feel are undervalued for my collection. Also I am slowly completing the SWSH TG and GG subsets as they really have beautiful but affordable cards.
Ok I'm super sorry if this is inappropriate but I started collecting cards like a lil over a month ago and only grew up with the series and games.. I watched soooo many vids about collecting pokemon cards and his are one of them and I just have to say he's mesmerising.. it's so insanely attractive how he calmly presents all of those different topics and things and idk but hello???! Am I the only one completely swooning over this or am I just distracted by the pokemon
For me, I just like seeing them, some are very cool. Also I like to arrange them, I just started. Literally got my first ETB today as a Christmas gift from me to me lol
Love the content! Honoured to be mentioned with some of the legends in the hobby. Agree with everything you said in the video, collecting the pristine gold star set is an insane goal i set for myself in 2024 but I’ve had many other goals like collecting all my favorite Suicunes that are just as enjoyable as completing my gold star set, there’s a collection goal for everybody and any budget! Happy collecting!
First time collecting, I wanted to master set prismatic evolutions because I like the eevees. However, I just realised yesterday that there’s going to be 4 of each basic card (I think?) instead of 2, so now I’m a bit lost if I should or not. I already preordered an ETB but that’s it
Yeah Prismatic is turning out to be massive. Hundreds of cards if you collect all the reverse holos. Maayyyybe a different goal would be more realistic
Last comment with the goal to collect everything, isnt the problem from my pov its the same goal I chase as well, doesnt meen I fomo or sth else I try to buy as low as possible try to make some money back for more expensive purchases by buying smartly and only buying singles.
I just started and my goal is to get one SIR or full art of every legendary (probably seems lame but budget and space are kinda tight. Especially due to the following side quest). Right now I'm trying to pull a full art Sylveon from terastal festival by myself since it's my favorite pokémon
Perhaps silly question as a non-collector (I've only opened a few cheap packs for fun): Why didn't you list "building decks for competitive play" as a reason for collecting? I assume there's plenty of people that primarily aim for the perfect deck during a certain rotation and then start over when those cards aren't usable in tournaments anymore.
Mine? My goal is to educate you guys and make videos. That means I often have to buy cards for the video. For example, I just got a bunch of McDonald’s cards and I bought lots of coins! Outside of that, I’m working on WOTC master sets :)
Hey man, sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if I could ask you about Japanese cards if you knew anything about their market? I live in Ontario, Canada and I came across a card shop selling a whole box of Japanese Mew 151 packs for $40 on sale because nobody in London cares to buy them. Is it worth it as an investment or is the value only in English cards?
English cards typically have a higher value than Japanese. But the Japanese 151 set has exclusive reverse holo cards. If you haven’t opened Japanese before, I would recommend giving it a try. They are much nicer than ours! Btw hello my fellow Canadian 🇨🇦
If it doesn't stray too far from your channel's focus, I would love to hear you go more in-depth about asking ourselves if we are ok with gambling to build our collections.
Very interesting Personally it is mostly personal. I just want a national dex and cards I find beautiful. But I also did master set of base set 1, jungle and fossil (happily I still had 90% from childhood) and I’m trying to do a « 151 » one But as probably many here I struggle to buy some expensive one like SAR Charizard. I’m French and here in france some cards are very expensive compared to their Japanese ou English version. Anyway thanks for the video, it helped me focus on my specific goals
Amazing content - just came across this channel and its great My goal: Master sets in all First generation sets (in first edition) - rocket, jungle and fossil down. Starting base now and 'might' add the gym sets...
@@sleevenocardbehind Whats your take on the PSA level that makes most sense. I have been debating for the base set whether to go for 7 or 8. 9 seems out of reach nowadays, and 10 is impossible. Ungraded I worry with base since I wouldn't be able to see them in person to check if they are fake before buying and seems prudent to get graded for that set. I sometimes lean towards 7 just because its the cheapest, but the jump to 8 in some cards is less so... Any thoughts on which seems to be the best balance between value and retention of value? For gym if it happens will just go raw, which is the same for rocket, jungle and fossil already.
Thanks for the forecast! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
I wouldn't view investing in Pokemon as a legitimate investment (especially when talking about college funds) because collectibles are the riskiest form of "investment" you can make, and unless you're maxing out other better investment options that are available (but limited) then it's not something to really look at. It's also dangerous to use the most sought-after box with the craziest modern price trajectory as a case here because its an exception and not the rule. If you bought Steam Siege booster boxes for $100 back in 2016, you could sell it for 220-ish locally, which isn't beating the market if you just invested 100 dollars in a stock market index fund. The future market for pokemon will also be *wildly* different in 5-10 years because folks are specifically buying and storing sealed pokemon product in much higher numbers than they did before 2018, and unless the hobby grows exponentially in the future to meet the peak demand today (it cannot, you eventually run out of people on Earth who can buy pokemon product) then these kind of numbers arent sustainable. Having it as a fun side-investment to mix your hobby with your future is fine, but *nobody* should be using any trading card game or collectible as a primary investment vehicle. That's very dangerous advice.
Bad takes, if you are in for a Pokemon Card Money investment, it’s better to just get into a 401k investment first. Scalpers and InvesterBros drive up the market for genuine collectors who are looking for a fair trade (so basically, your book quote is now meaningless) and thus creating the fomo speculative market that ends hurting the whole hobby. TPCI aren’t raising prices, they aren’t profiting off FOMO, again, it’s the scalpers and investing bros who, again, drive up the market when allocation is topped (Prismatic Evolutions, IE, the initial preorders are now expensive because of that side of collectors, and yet, the print run will probably not stop until 2026). Tell me you don’t play the TCG without telling me. Again, bad takes.
Bro how did you know I love the claymation Dittos??? Anyway, I really enjoy that you’re challenge viewer to look internally and evaluate their goals with collecting. Great video! I’m currently working on NM copies of every Ninetales card ever.

Edit: Wasn’t expecting a feature! Thank you that’s awesome. I just picked up 3 new 1st edition trainers: Master Ball, Fervor, and Blaine’s Gamble.
Thanks for the input!
Working towards all Xatu cards at the moment. About halfway through Alakazam as well.
I collect these cards because
A: I want to potentially grade and sell a few expensive ones to buy other things.
B: I love partaking in competitive hobbies, and the Pokemon TCG is no different. I use some of my cards to build decks and hopefully win tournaments.
I’m a huge fan of Sugimori art, and it’s still my favorite in the entire franchise. Great video, great job as always ❤
I likr collecting vintage cards like Base set holos as well as specific pokemon like Gengar, Pikachu, and Charizard.
I just got the urge to collect again. Learned 151 was a thing that I missed out on. Went on a wild journey to every retailer and card shop in my area and couldn't fined any. Called one random shop and the guy said he had the premium collection in stock because he forgot he had it.
That is awesome!
I'm working on all WOTC sets as that's the generation of Pokémon I grew up with. Just finished base set recently!
collecting can get real expensive if you don't set rules in place. great video.
Hi, any suggestions for storing (binders) one of card? One binder for each generation?
My collections are...
- Pokedex with every variation (shiny, alt forme, gender, mega etc)
- My perfect region (personal top 151 pokemon)
- Shinji Kanda art
- Tomokazu Komiya art
- Psyduck and Ludicolo
- Eeveelutions
- Funskool
- WOTC
- Evolutions
- 151
This way every new set has something for me, but I'm never in need of a great deal
Personal top 151 is a cool idea!
Do it! Even if it just stays as a list it's fun to see what floats your boat.
I'm strict with it, so you have to pick from the starter pokemon, have to have a basic bird line, a pikaclone, legendaries at the end etc. It's gotta feel like a region
Merry Christmas dude big fan u are really awesome
Dude u got nice videos hope so u will become as good as Sleeve no card behind
Merry Christmas to you too!
Base Set for short term since all I need to get is some non-holo cards there. But in terms of passion, the Delta Species reverses I been picking up for a few years now everytime I saw one in the wild. The reverses back then were sometimes better than the rare slot and I miss it.
Man I have a soft spot for the Delta reverses. I have Espeon and it’s my baby
What software did you use for the flowchart I've been looking for something like this
It’s a browser based site I found called excalidraw
@sleevenocardbehind thanks a lot
I love pokemon so much and I want to collect my favorite art and cards especially my faves like lunnala meloetta and frostmoth (ik weird top 3)
I'm curious where did you get the giant cartridges on the wall?
I made those myself, but you can find them on Etsy by other people
Ok I'm super sorry if this is inappropriate but I started collecting cards like a lil over a month ago and only grew up with the series and games..
I watched soooo many vids about collecting pokemon cards and his are one of them and I just have to say he's mesmerising.. it's so insanely attractive how he calmly presents all of those different topics and things and idk but hello???!
Am I the only one completely swooning over this or am I just distracted by the pokemon
I can’t believe you don’t already have 100K subs. This is top tier!
I gotta put in the reps first 💪🏻 I’ll be there soon! Thank you for the support
I'm collecting one of each Pokemon for my collection!
I'm trying to get every bellsprout, while also making content on pokemon cards. Thanks for this video!
Subbed 🤛🏻
For me, I just like seeing them, some are very cool. Also I like to arrange them, I just started. Literally got my first ETB today as a Christmas gift from me to me lol
Welcome to the hobby!
My personal goal right now is to master set crown zenith and collect every darkrai card
1997 carddass master set all in psa 10. about 80% done
My favourite set!
Some of the best Pokemon TCG content on RUclips. Keep doing what you do man. Really digging the Gameboy cartridges. Looking clean.
Thank you!
I didn't have any but now I'm gonna try getting every rowlet evolution line's pokémon
0:18 whoaaa!!
Thanks for watching! Btw I’m in the interior, maybe I’ll catch you at one of the Van card shows next year
@ wow, hit me up when you visit Vancouver, I’ll show you our collection, we can shoot some content together too!
First time collecting, I wanted to master set prismatic evolutions because I like the eevees. However, I just realised yesterday that there’s going to be 4 of each basic card (I think?) instead of 2, so now I’m a bit lost if I should or not. I already preordered an ETB but that’s it
I imagine Prismatic will prolly be the hardest English set to master from the SV era if not one of the hardest
If your trying to limit the budget , try and switch up the goal. Possibly new goal could just be to collect all the eeveelutions from prismatic.
@@thehungrymonk17 that's what I feared, maybe I'll just try Stellar Crown
Yeah Prismatic is turning out to be massive. Hundreds of cards if you collect all the reverse holos. Maayyyybe a different goal would be more realistic
I have all kindgras and all Misty related cards
I just like Pokemon and the competitve aspect
Last comment with the goal to collect everything, isnt the problem from my pov its the same goal I chase as well, doesnt meen I fomo or sth else I try to buy as low as possible try to make some money back for more expensive purchases by buying smartly and only buying singles.
I just started and my goal is to get one SIR or full art of every legendary (probably seems lame but budget and space are kinda tight. Especially due to the following side quest). Right now I'm trying to pull a full art Sylveon from terastal festival by myself since it's my favorite pokémon
Not lame at all, that’s really cool
To be honest I’ve made a lot of mistakes and you will in your first year. Now I have learnt it’s simple.
I snuck it in there but didn’t add it to the flowchart because the tcg players are the smart ones among us!
Can u make a video on the new pokemon tcg pocket game ?
That would be fun to see.
So many people are asking for it that I might have to come up with something
What is *your* collection goal?
Mine? My goal is to educate you guys and make videos. That means I often have to buy cards for the video. For example, I just got a bunch of McDonald’s cards and I bought lots of coins!
Outside of that, I’m working on WOTC master sets :)
to collect every shinji kanda art in psa10
This was insanely inspirational
Great video, I enjoyed the content. I do believe that base zard is pulled every 48 packs or so rather than 108 just fyi.
You deserve so much more attention
If it doesn't stray too far from your channel's focus, I would love to hear you go more in-depth about asking ourselves if we are ok with gambling to build our collections.
I returned to pkm with my gf after 20y. Still finding how to deal with the hobby. But we love pkms so I gonna found out in the way. Great video! 🎉
this video is helpful for more than pokemon cards.
Great video - thanks!
Very interesting
Personally it is mostly personal. I just want a national dex and cards I find beautiful.
But I also did master set of base set 1, jungle and fossil (happily I still had 90% from childhood) and I’m trying to do a « 151 » one
But as probably many here I struggle to buy some expensive one like SAR Charizard. I’m French and here in france some cards are very expensive compared to their Japanese ou English version.
Anyway thanks for the video, it helped me focus on my specific goals
I stopped playing slots for pokemon cars. I thinks its a healthier alternative. Maybe its just cope, but i need a little gambling.
6:27, 7:21, 10:19, and 11:15 One is not they or their.
great video! thank you!
Pokémon collecting is the biggest pump and dump of our generation.
Excellent content
Sick video keep it up
Amazing content - just came across this channel and its great
My goal: Master sets in all First generation sets (in first edition) - rocket, jungle and fossil down. Starting base now and 'might' add the gym sets...
Nice. I’d like to complete those sets in 1st edition as well
@@sleevenocardbehind Whats your take on the PSA level that makes most sense.
@@ShadeyatCal I'm primarily a binder collector, but I would start with 8 since you can more easily switch to 7 if you change your mind
I open 60 boosterboxen per set and Sell all cards in 2/3 days at release and get all money get back and master set is free 😇 i do this 3/4 years
60 booster boxes per set!?
@@sleevenocardbehind i can show you with Prismatic if you wanted 😊😇 then i open 10/20 case
great vid
Thanks for the forecast! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
CUBONE CARDS
