- One of the most exceptional models to come from Hornby in both looks and running is the 08. However after a great deal of time even this fine loco needs a clean and service.
This video quickly walks you through the main steps to do this.

Thank you for a detailed and well presented tutorial on a lovely model. I too think the 08's are magnificent!
My pleasure 😀
These type of videos are so useful, Mike. I have learned so much regarding the servicing of new-ish models since getting back into the hobby after 40+ years away from watching this sort of content. I also watched a few of your older servicing videos as a kind of "refresher course" prior to tackling the maintenance of my Lima diesel fleet.
OOBill recently completed a 4-parter re-assembling my WD Austerity 2-8-0, as although my knowledge and skill in maintenance and repair has improved greatly, it was no match for the challenges posed by that project.
I'm so glad to hear they are helpful, exactly what I hoped for. Feel free to request guides, if I've got them I'll do them
Great servicing video. Loved your camera work. Yesterday we honored D Day. Today me and my wife celebrate 44 years married. Bill and Janet from California
Huge congratulations 🎊 kindest regards Mike & Cheryl
Congratulations Janet and Bill ! And wishing you many more happy years together. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing this service video Mike. All clear and well filmed. Another excellent Hornby locomotive is the J15 Steam locomotive with a very similar mechanisme, 5-pole motor & flywheel. And at the time it was launched it was very reasonable priced. Kind regards, Filip
Hi Filip thank you 😊 ah yes the J15 is a favourite and had metal boiler
Mr. 08 Shunter is a useful station pilot. He could arrange coaches for Lydham Manor.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful model! Great video 👍
Thank you! Cheers! 🍻
Thanks Mike, great for the data bank.
Thanks kindly ☺️
Excellent review video Mike well done 3:16
Thanks 😊
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited My pleasure Mike
Another workmanlike job. Well done, Mike.
Thanks very much 😀 one of my favourites
hello mike, great video and very educational, will check my 08. how they differ from the old Triang ones. although i was brought up with the Triang ones in the 60's and still have 2. i think you used to drive the real ones, i can only dream,
Thanks for watching! Yes indeed I did and loved it. Some of my happiest times on the 350s
Excellent, thanks Mike. What do you use to remove the old oily deposits please?
Hi 👋 thanks, cotton buds mostly, if the surface is unpainted a little IPA
Thanks for this tutorial Mike, which mechanism do you think is better Bachmann or Hornby?
That's a tough call. Hornby probably but only just
Really useful video Mike - thank you! 👍
With the bottom plate removed do the wheelsets drop out?
_Running finescale, I tend to check /reset the back-to-backs and (if necessary) use washers to remove any excessive side play._
Hi Colin, thanks. Not easily is the answer. The bottom running gear has to be unclipped and removed. Very easy on the Bachmann version. It looks less so on these
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Mike, thank you.
I've only got Hornby D3721 (09 under TOPS) to examine....
_(Hornby D3986 is already on my disposals list)._
They are superb models
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited Thanks Mike - not tried running any of them yet.
Not sure how I ended up with D3986 as it was allocated to the WR for all its working life...
Could have been repaired at Eastleigh and then on running in duties?
