The more interesting news about the Montreal 2050 plan is actually that when they adopt it, it will remove all parking minimums, add maximums in some places and introduce bike parking minimums where there aren't already
THIS! It has not been mentioned much in the media, but this is huge!
The metro M4 in Copenhagen opened yesterday 👍
In Porto, Portugal, a new ligh rail rail line extension is bound to open next week.
Paris Line 14 massive extension opening on Monday!
2 weeks after line 11
That's in plans for the next week :)
Sweet :)
That was quick 🙂
Yeah! New Urban News fresh out the oven!
In the NL, there is the extension of Metro-line 52 in Amsterdam to the airport and Hoofdorp, still not 100% approved afaik but good first steps have been made. It would help add international trains to the national network
Then there is the Lelylijn which was approved by the new coalition, which connects Amsterdam to the northern provinces and also Scandinavia (new TEN-T corridor)
Also there is the train between Liege-Maastricht-Aachen coming soon and a direct fast train from Eindhoven-Venlo-Dusseldorf coming end of 2026
I guess it wouldn't hurt if you tried and elaborated on the idea of "Sponge City". As the name suggests, it should mean creating extra areas of permeable surface across cities to deal with excessive precipitation. Sounds ineresting. I'll be looking forward to your vid on that. Thx.
Helsinki also has a new tram depot in Ruskeasuo, Helsinki. It's completed, but not in uae yet.
The PUM 2050 is such a fantastic plan for the next decades. I'm so happy and hyped about it as a future urbanist. You also forgot something really important, Montréal is erasing all parkings minimum on all its territory and even introducing bike parkings minimums in this plan! It's the first city of its size in all North America to do that. Quebec city also have just erased parkings minimum in many areas (But it's a smaller city with a Metropolitan Population of about 900k people)
Thank you for covering Montreal! I would personally like a full video on the topic. Love your videos!
Thanks! Apologies for using the wrong picture :D
Not sure if the problem is completely fixed, but I have seen several M7 metros riding in coupled formation with passengers. So I suppose the problem is (almost) fixed :)
Some ideas for Netherlands topics:
- From 30 June, the Three Country Train will connect Liége in Belgium with Maastricht and Heerlen in the Netherlands and Aachen in Germany by direct train. There has been a train linking Liége and Maastricht and a train linking Maastricht and Aachen already, but those will now be connected, creating a longer, direct train, which means less people need a transfer on this route.
- From 21 July, Amsterdam's tram 25 will be extended to Uithoorn with three new stops. This is quite special, since in the past, it used to be quite common for trams to connect cities and towns. Nowadays, most tram lines in the world stay within the city. This line, already going to Amstelveen, will travel through farmlands before arriving in the town of Uithoorn, where it will thus stop at three locations.
Hope this helps :).
Thanks, that's the good ones!
Hope Amsterdam subway trains will be finally fixed.
Oh wow, literally just in. Yesterday, at an event at Carris's Tram Depot in Santo Amaro, Lisbon, where the minister for Infrastructures and Housing, along with the minister for the environment and energy, it was announced that Carris will be acquiring 15 new trams for 27.5 million euros. They had a previous order for 15 trams made by CAF, all of which have been delivered, with 14 in service. We don't know who the manufacturer will be, as it is apparently a new contract, not an extension with Alstom.
The Lisbon tram network is set to be expanding over the next few years, so their new trams will come in handy ^^ Glad to see so many transit news from Portugal this week
I'd love to see a separate video on Montreal 2050. Nice to hear Warsaw getting a new tram depot and very nice to hear Romania is getting another subway.
I am personally more interested in the general fight against car centric planning than rolling stock, there are so many trains in the world, there will always be some new ones. E.g. bike infrastructure in singapore and legislation anywhere is more interesting than 10 new trains in a random city
Line H metro line in Porto started construction
Was it only this week? Damn
0:22 "montreal canada"... shows the city of quebec
Ooops :(
My bad
Montreal’s bringing the trams back!? Hell to the yeah! That’s awesome! Hopefully they actually get built!
0:23 Wrong photo
This is Quebec City rather than Montreal.
since i live in montreal i would love a video abot the cities 2050 devloment plan.
0:23 that building is the Château Frontenac, it is in Quebec City
Yep, that's my fault :(
Porto Metro's D Line Extension (From it's current terminus of Santo Ovídio, to the new terminus of Vila D'Este) has opened today (Friday 28th). It's a 3,15km extension, adding 3 stations. Manuel Leão, Hospital Santos Silva and finally Vila D'Este, as I mentioned before.
In another piece of Portuguese specific news, the government is in talks with the EU for a possible exemption to the rule that requires TEN-T routes to be built using Standard Gauge, instead of Iberian Gauge as the current line is planned
@0:22 That is a photo of the Chateau Frontenac in *_Quebec City_* -- NOT Montreal.
Yep, I know it already :D
A separate video on sponge city (which I know as blue-green infrastructure) would be really cool! Especially since I think a lot of us armchair urbanists don#t really know a lot about the topic
First Malaysia news!
Yup!
You skipped on a news from Brazil. The city of Salvador in the State of Bahia started the construction of an LRT line. The idea emerged over 10 years ago for the 2014 world cup but was not realised and got stuck at planning. The LRT line would replace and improve on the very old suburban train line (originally built in the 1800s and the trains were from around the 50s) Later, the state government signed a contract with BYD for the construction of a monorail in place of the LRT (but for some reason the government still called the project as an LRT). In 2021, the Chinese group responsible for the project (Skyrail) wanted to update the contract from 1,5 billion Reais to 5,2 billion (because of rising costs related to the COVID pandemic if I'm not mistaken) and the extension of the contract time, the government did not agree. In August of last year, after a lot of legal stuff, the government cancelled the contract. Then, the government started the project anew, coming back to the original LTR idea.
The government opened the bidding in December of 2023 and on the 14th of June, at an event, the governor signed the document that kick-starts the building. The project cost is 3,4 billion Reais and is divided into 3 segments. The first is scheduled to begin operations in 2026 and the whole conclusion is set for October 2027. The first segment has 16,62 km with 17 stops and 1 station, the second 9,2 km with 8 stops and the third 10,5 km with 9 stops. The total length is 36,4 km, longer than the old project with 23,3 km and 25 stations. Although the monorail project went further towards the city center, the LRT goes way deeper into the suburban area crossing the entire city length, connecting with the BRT, the big new bus station of Águas Claras and the metro.
On the 18th of this month the government bought 40 "CAF Urbos 3" trains from the city of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso and their failed Tram project, to run the Salvador LRT. At this moment, the trains are being transported to São Paulo and later will be sent to Salvador.
The tram of Cuiabá is another can of worms. The project was planned for the 2014 world cup and began construction in 2012. The initial cost was 1,47 billion Reais for 22 km of rail. But the project construction would be stopped based on corruption allegations. The governor criticized the project, arguing that the tram was too expensive and illegally chosen in place of an BRT, while the mayor pleaded for the project to continue. Years passed and earlier this year, after 6 km built, 40 trains bought, 50% of all construction done, 1 billion Reais spent and more than 900 million reais needed to conclude the project, against the prefecture and based on a very strange document (in my view) that claimed that the rail would be a lot more expensive to operate per passenger, the state government cancelled the entire project, demolish the rail structure, get rid of the trains (that never transported a single passenger) and build an BRT for around 500 million. In the end, I'm still glad that the trains are at least going to Salvador.
Back to Salvador, on the 23rd, the vice-governor (currently running for mayor) talked about taking the LRT to the old city center too, which would be excellent. Earlier on the 14th, the government talked about ordering studies to run the LRT on the old city center and the Itapagipe Península. But this is only political talk now. The government has to finish the initial LRT, the BRT (which some new stops opened in April) and the metro expansions first before a project like that.
On another note, days ago, the company CCR (who runs the Salvador metro) is interested at creating a intercity train connection Salvador and Feira de Santana (≈115 km appart). They ordered a sturdy that shall be ready in 8 months.
Some other news, but a bit older. In Brasília, on the 6th, the company CBTU presented at the national congress a preliminary project to run a diesel LRT on the freight rail line of Brasília serving the Metropolitan area and connecting to the metro system. The project is very rough yet and the company wants to do a test run still this year. This project is of special interest for the national government, the Brasília government and the Goiás government.
Lastly, this is pretty small. Brasília is phasing out cash payment from the public transport. Slowly throughout the year the government has been expanding the payment system, allowing recharging the transit card with the instantaneous PIX payment system and fitting more busses to accept credit and debit card proximity payment. On May 16th, the government announced that it would phase out cash payment starting on the first of July with cash only being accepted as payment in certain locations to recharge the transit card. But now, on the 19th of June, the government decided to slow down the process for a more gradual transition, setting to remove cash until the end of the year.

UK's West Coast Main Line gets new bi-mode trains (Avanti). New York gives up on congestion pricing
What does bi-mode mean? Diesel -electric?
@@cityforall Yes. Avanti West Coast are getting a mix of class 807 electric and 805 diesel/electric trains (Hitachi A-train series).
lets go sponge cities video!
I think the M7 Metro issues have been solved I have finally seen them use 2 trains connected to eachother recently
They were ashamed by the news and finally did it :D
Can you make this as podcast?
What do you mean exactly? Something like talking live to another guy?
No I mean that put this series on like apple podcast or something so I can listen it while doing something else.
@@mikaelryynanen2528 I'll have to discover how it works
renne metro line 2 have reopened after 6 mouth of repear du to rolling stock issue
What happened to the rolling stock?
@@cityforall the rolling stock is from neoval technologie and a bearing part broke on a train in January. They have been investigating and working on the trains since January, service is only just returning.

Toronto Transit CEO resigns under pressure from city mayor.
Montreal plan is only a vision. The city can't even balance the city budget forget the tramway line. They make a rapid bus line (SRB Pie IX) for 523 millions $. The initial budget was only 154 millions $. Montreal city paid only 130 millions out of the 523 millions. The city will need a lot of money from the federal or the provincial government if they want to do anything
Please Czechia, not Czech Republic
Ok, no problem!
I don't think this draft urban plan will survive the next election. Montreal was agglomerated into one large city about 25 years ago. Several of the suburbs that were absorbed in the agglomeration have major infrastructure faults with the rain water and sewage drainage. The politicians do not like to talk about this issue because it would mean tearing up most of the streets in these suburbs to install pipes of the correct size and add sewage collectors. The correct steps to remedy the issue are very expensive and would not be completed in a reasonable amount of time. Instead they are blaming climate change for residential flooding during short periods of rain. The voters don't buy it.
The plan emphasizes nice visual things like housing and transport but the need is really to repair the infrastructure. Purposing retention ponds as a possible solution is not helping at all. The city needs to be transparent and identify the areas where these flooded residential areas are, explain the missing or inadequate infrastructure, explain the cost it would take to correct the problem. Then some better planning can take place. The likeliest outcome would be a plan that would take a few decades to correct all the problems. The amount of infrastructure spend in some specific neighbourhoods would be very disproportionate to the number of residents living there.
If you look at the plan the strategy is to densify certain districts around public transport. None of this should go forward in these suburbs with the drainage problems and other infrastructure problems exist. They will be essentially compounding the problem.
Is it only the boroughs of the city of Montreal that have this problem or demerged municipalities on the island like Wesmount, TMR, Beaconsfield and Pointe Claire that have this problem because according to what Ive seen in the last few years the city of Montreal doesn't want to build in places that have flood problems. Between 2017 and 2023 the current administration of the city of Montreal has blocked over 5500 housing units in the pierrfonds borough of the west island because of these problems. How many neighborhoods on the island of Montreal have these ploblems i'm very interested.
0:50 trams are not what montreal needs. It needs more real rapid transit
Why not both?😝
@@abdoulm.sorofino2642 money
They are proposing both depending on the corridors and their needs. Full plan is available on city’s website 🍻
