If he just goes straight and the defender is coming from the side, when he slides the defender can still get a late hit on him from the side, which is actually where he is most vulnerable since his throwing arm can be hit by the side. So when he's running in open field (clearly he practiced this) and there's a defender who has a clear shot at a hit, he will go directly at him and kick his legs up thus protecting his upper body. It's actually pure genius, because it's so counter intuitive. Rather than running away from the defender, he runs right at him. That's why he's TB.
There was one season where he was (for a very brief period of time) leading the league in rushing touchdowns. And one season for several games he had more rushing touchdowns than the entire Miami Dolphins
