I have a pair of the LCD-X arriving this afternoon, I think. UPS is kind of messing with me on the tracking but I think they are still due here today. I ordered them as an open box pair but have been told be the dealer that they oversold their open box inventory so they have shipped a brand new pair out to me at the open box price. I've heard nothing but great things about this headphone. I currently own the LCD-2 and the EL-8 in the Audeze line.
@@TheHonestAudiophile I've had them on now for just a couple of hours, they didn't show up yesterday as I had anticipated. I am listening to the latest Doobie Brothers record, Liberte' and I can't believe what I am hearing. I have yet to mess with any EQ because I want to hear them straight out of the box. It's a step up I think from my beloved LCD-2 in that the top end is smoother, cymbal work for instance is crisper and more detailed. I'm 60 years old and my ears have experienced a LOT over the decades. I need that extra bit of sizzle there. There is certainly enough bass punch for me. I don't like the kind of thump that knocks the bumpers off the old Yugo. It will dig deep when it needs to or when told to do so, however. Love the mids. They might not be superior in soundstage but they aren't bad by any means. I am really impressed with them. The earpads are different than those on my LCD-2. Different leather? They don't even smell the same. They are comfortable. I don't notice them being any heavier than the LCD-2 even though they are according to everything I have read or heard. This is a top dollar headphone for my budget, I just can't justify spending anything more at this stage of the game. I am happy.
And a few hours later, a bit of EQ just within my old school music player, nothing too scientific here but this headphone is the best sounding headphone I have placed upon my cranium. Better than this? Sure, but I can't go there.
I have a hifiman ananda ..will this be a good addition..specially looking for something to compliment ananda specially for bass oriented genres like EDM and Hip Hop
Hi ..yup…it’s me again ( time traveling 🧭🧳) I have a bunch of audio gear that’s being sold on consignment up here …and I think I’ll let it go for these AUDEZE headphones…I think it’s a huge step up from my 650’s .
Thanks for this review. It helped me decide on my purchase of the LCD-X and I’m very happy! I’m now researching the GSX-Mini amp and I’m curious about your comment preferring unbalanced for that amp / headphone combo. Could you please elaborate? THANKS!
The HeadAmp is my benchmark amp and it paired very well with the LCD-X 21 both SE and balanced. Had no issues powering the LCD-X 21. LCD-X 21 does benefit from the extra power of balanced but sounds fantastic SE as well. The GS-X Mini is a great pairing.I have the Mytek Liberty DAC as my DAC.
Hi Dave.... I was thinking of the Focal Clear original headphones too. Do you have any comparison thoughts with these two? Looks like Simon always steals the show😉
Simon sure does love attention and he's very inquisitive. The Focal Clear has a more intimate stage, slightly warmer and fuller, slightly better tone and timbre but has more intense treble presentation.
Hi I have the LCD 2f (2015), and I am looking at the X 21. Do you think the jump is worth it, or are they too close to notice a worthwhile investment? Music-wise, they will be used for movie soundtracks more than anything really. Thanks
Been a long time since I've heard the LCD2F, like 5 years. But I think the LCD-X will be an upgrade in technical abilities, might not be as bassy and warm.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Yeah, that's what I am picking up on. More detail and tuning, but you might not have as wide of a smile while using them vs the LCD2f.
Newbie here, what portable DAC would you recommend to pair with this? Can I connect this to my Iphone 13 using Apple lossless music and enjoy hifi music right off the bat? Or do I need extra gears to make this headphone shine? TIA.
In my Arya Stealth review there is a comparison between the LCD-X 21 and Arya Stealth made at the 7:13 mark ruclips.net/video/vtuDHQPXSB4/видео.html Yes, I believe the Arya is built a lot better then cheaper budget Hifiman options.
I own a pair of Sennheiser HD600 and I'm looking for my first pair of planar magnetic headphones. Are these going to be a big improvement over the HD600 or are they more like the planar magnetic equivalent to the HD600? I just want to know how noticeable the difference will be for the $1200 price. Thanks!
Sorry haven't heard the 800s in about 4 years and don't recall enough to give fair comparison. Biggest difference I remember is the soundstage is massive on 800s.
Depends on the use case. LCD-X is a neutral, analytical presentation for nit picking a track and the 660s2 is an all around listen that has good technical abilities and excellent tone and timbre.
I listen mostly to classical, jazz, acoustical, soundtracks, rock, country and folk. @@TheHonestAudiophile man, that was fast, I was editing it! Thank You! Pretty much committed to a pair of LCD x, just waiting for a weak moment, perhaps just a straw to push me over.

Hi Dave.. Hope you are doing great 👍 I am planning to buy my first high end headphones.. I am really confused between Arya SE and lcd x 2021. Price wise both are same. I will be pairing it with my fiio m17 DAP.. Please can you advise and share your thoughts. I listen to mostly all kind of genre. So headphones should be versatile. Thanks in advance.
Depending on your preference, the Arya has a massive soundstage with crazy depth and layering, is brighter in the treble, has slightly metallic timbre and more aggressive in presentation. The LCDX21 is f you desire a more neutral and accurate tone and timbre with a more accurate soundstage.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Thank you so much Dave for your response.. I arya leagues ahead in terms of sound stage? Or lcd is just slight behind.. I am sensitive to peaking treble that's why I am leaning towards Lcd x.. I cannot audition any headphones I have to buy blindly..
Let me put it this way, the LCDX stage is more natural and accurate, gives proper sense of the venue size; on the other hand the Arya is impressively wide and engaging but isn't natural or accurate, gives an exaggerated sense of the venue size. The Arya has peaky treble. Both require a decently powerful amplifier.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Thank you for giving specific details..🙂 FIIO M17 have 1.5w @32ohms on battery mode . And 3w per channel on DC Power .. Will it be enough power to drive them I guess ? If you want to pick one between these two what will be your choice ? Thanks in advance.
Dave, I'm looking to replace my Dan Clark aeon 2 closed back headphones, but need to stay with a closed back design. Do you think that the LCD-XC 2021 closed version would be a good replacement? If not, what would you recommend?
Had the XC and it's basically the closed back version of the LCD-X with it's sound sig. The XC is the best closed back HP I've heard to date... but I sold it not too long ago because of it's WEIGHT!! It's weight became a deal breaker as you can only listen for short bursts before you really start to feel them. I've become very conscious of comfort now and weight on a HP as much as the sound sig on a HP. Audeze finally remedied the weight problem with the LCD-5 which costs a fortune btw... but the others are still a problem for many with the weight issue. I'd never buy another Audeze HP until they revise their whole line and somehow make them lighter. It's just a deal breaker for me. I have the lighter, more comfortable Arya Stealth Magnet (which I like way more than the previous Arya versions) and use a Lokius Tone Control/EQ on it to add whatever I feel is necessary like some Low end Bass. With all that said... if you feel your neck has the stamina to handle the XC which I think is over 700 grams... it's probably the best closed back in that price range
@@TheHonestAudiophile I would love to hear the new 2021 revised sound sig of the LCD-X... but I already know the weight will be an issue. I tried an older version of the LCD-X and not only was it heavy and felt like a helmet on your head... the sound signature out of the box might have been the worst I've ever heard. Really Muddy and Bloated sounding. That's why I'm curious to hear this revised 2021 LCD-X... but I'm guessing it's pretty close to the XC sound sig. The XC being a closed back delivered some pretty nice Punch and Slam along with nice Bass. I miss listening to them... but don't miss the sore neck they gave me. Keep up the good work Dave!! 👍
I didn't have them in house at the same time, the LCD X was returned to RDT Hifi after the review. Going off memory; the X has wider stage, Closed has better bass impact, Closed has slightly more forward mids, Treble is very similar, X has slightly better detail retrieval and resolution.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Question in case you remember, was the more forward mids of the closed too forward or is this just in relation to the X. It wasn't shouty or anything right? And lastly, was the closed fitted with the new 2021 pads with no memory foam just like the 2021 LCDX? Thanks
Reason I ask this because I also saw your older LCD2C review and I got the feeling you may have not liked them so much probably because of those old memory foam pads that made them sound too recessed in the upper mids.
Here is a link to my Closed video: ruclips.net/video/3dLT8HHvdyc/видео.html The comparison about forward mids I made above was just in reference to the X. My Closed is the 2021 version.
Curious, were your thoughts/review on the LCD-X performed with or without EQ? I'm very interested in owning a pair, but I'm concerned about how things will sound without the use of EQ. Thanks!
@@TheHonestAudiophile thanks for commenting. I gotta say, it was a tough choice between the LCD-X and the Ananda without hearing either, but when an opportunity to purchase the X came about for roughly the same price as the Ananda I had to give it a whirl.
I just bought these and am so disappointed for my £1000+. the 2-3k dip is just far too much, there's no presence to these phones. I also find the highs at around 6-7k a little grating. I would love to send them back.
@noob9103 Gear used for the review and comparison is mentioned in the video starting at the 1:18 mark. HeadAmp GS-X MIni and Mytek Liberty DAC aren't crappy in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting.

The LCD-X is a special Audeze. Yes it still has a smidge of house sound but better in my opinion. Maybe one day you'll get the opportunity. I hope you do get the chance to hear them.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Yeah, i hope too. It's became one of your favorite headphones, so? Because i remember clearly that 660s and Ananda's was your favorites, but i don't know if it's at the price point or in general; you already had focals, hi-end stuff... I'm curious! Cheers
How does the Lcd X compare to the Lcd 3. You are growing Dave and I luv it you are a good guy.
Thanks for the kind words, greatly appreciated.
I haven't heard the LCD 3 but once briefly at an audio show. Sorry I don't recall enough to compare.
Hifiman Arya stealth or lcd x 2021 for sound quality only?
What's your favorite pick under $1500??
LCD-X 21 would be my pick, closely followed by the Arya Stealth.

@@towsifshahriarshovo my pleasure, you're welcome
excellent review. just subscribed to your channel. lots of interesting reviews! one question for you or any of your viewers: have you compared the LCD-X 2021 to the previous LCD-X? is there a noticeable difference regarding their overall character/sound signature? looking for a reference headphone to use for my mixes and masters (mostly jazz and classical) in addition to my room monitors. thanks!
I haven't heard the original LCD X outside of an audio show several years ago so I don't remember enough to compare.
Awesomeness. I look forward to hearing your impressions of them.
I am happy.
Awesomeness. I'm glad you enjoy them. Thanks for the impressions. Enjoy the Music ❤️
And a few hours later, a bit of EQ just within my old school music player, nothing too scientific here but this headphone is the best sounding headphone I have placed upon my cranium. Better than this? Sure, but I can't go there.
Mine is coming tomorrow!
Hi Dave, differences between LCD-X before 2021 and 2021 model?
I've only heard the og LCD X at audio shows and meets and that was close to 2 years ago. I don't recall enough to compare them. Sorry.
I have a hifiman ananda ..will this be a good addition..specially looking for something to compliment ananda specially for bass oriented genres like EDM and Hip Hop
A very good compliment to the Ananda but not the most bassy headphone for EDM and hip-hop.
Give the bass a bump with EQ and these bang hard with edm and hip hop.
How does compare with sony mdr z7 in terms of bass and sound quality?
Been a very long time since I've heard either and I don't recall enough to give comparison. Sorrt
Hi ..yup…it’s me again ( time traveling 🧭🧳) I have a bunch of audio gear that’s being sold on consignment up here …and I think I’ll let it go for these AUDEZE headphones…I think it’s a huge step up from my 650’s .
awesomeness! I look forward to hearing your impressions of them.

I’ll take the Arya stealth! Great headphone!

Very good review.

@CoffeeXmusic My pleasure, you're welcome.
Hi
I have the LCD 2f (2015), and I am looking at the X 21.
Exactly. I look forward to hearing your impressions of the LCD-X if you pick them up.
Hi Dave, i love the natural sound of my hd660s but i want to try something better. Will LCD X be a big step forward?
Totally different presentations and the LCD X is a big step forward.

Any comparison between LCD-X and LCD-XC
I have only heard the LCD-XC once at an audio show and don't recall enough to do a fair comparison. Sorry.

You would need an amplifier to properly drive the LCD X 21. They are best used with a desktop setup.

Hi again, would NAD M10 V2 work?
Sorry haven't heard the NAD M10 V2.
Between the X and Arya which one is your personal favorite? Also is the build quality of the Aryas enough to last several years with no issues?
In my Arya Stealth review there is a comparison between the LCD-X 21 and Arya Stealth made at the 7:13 mark ruclips.net/video/vtuDHQPXSB4/видео.html
Yes, I believe the Arya is built a lot better then cheaper budget Hifiman options.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank you for your answer, but I was asking for your personal preference between the two.
I'd pick the LCD-X 2021
I own a pair of Sennheiser HD600 and I'm looking for my first pair of planar magnetic headphones. Are these going to be a big improvement over the HD600 or are they more like the planar magnetic equivalent to the HD600? I just want to know how noticeable the difference will be for the $1200 price.
Thanks!
Totally different experience. They compliment each other. Look forward to hearing your impressions.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Cool! Hope to try em out soon.
Would it be fine to drive this with a schiit magni modi stack? Or should i upgrade my stack to make the most out of the lcd x?
I haven't heard that stack but it should be a good starting point.
Helko.
How about the ananda versus the sundara?
Comparisons made in my Ananda and Sundara reviews.
What's your take on Sennheiser HD 800s???? vs LCD X 2021
Sorry haven't heard the 800s in about 4 years and don't recall enough to give fair comparison. Biggest difference I remember is the soundstage is massive on 800s.
@@TheHonestAudiophile I hope you will soon get a chance to review HD 800s!
These or the Sennheiser hd 660s2?
Depends on the use case. LCD-X is a neutral, analytical presentation for nit picking a track and the 660s2 is an all around listen that has good technical abilities and excellent tone and timbre.
Now i have both and i am happy with both of them @@TheHonestAudiophile

Hi Dave! I know it is a boring question, but which one would You take, x or 660s? (If price doesn’t count) Thanks!
LCD-X 2021
Thanks! One more question pls: what about comfort of lcd-x? Asking it because of the weight it has.
@@1234Imre As mentioned in the video, I had no issues with comfort or weight. But they are significantly heavier and larger then the 660s.
@@1234Imre I have lcd-x since one month - music sounds so nice that I don't feel their weight. After one week comfort is better - clamp force become not so strong.
Hi Dave.. Hope you are doing great 👍
I am planning to buy my first high end headphones..
Have no experience with M17 but looks like a quality device. On DC power it would be adequate. I'd pick the LCD-X 21.
Dave, I'm looking to replace my Dan Clark aeon 2 closed back headphones, but need to stay with a closed back design. Do you think that the LCD-XC 2021 closed version would be a good replacement? If not, what would you recommend?
I would get the new LCD 2 Closed as a closed back. Sorry haven't heard the LCD XC. Review coming soon on the LCD 2 Closed.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Thank you for the quick reply. I'm looking forward to your LCD 2 Closed review.
Thanks for the impressions. Totally understand about the weight.
Interesting, a lot of my favorite audio reviewers have cats………
They use them for measuring the frequency response
Did you compare this with the lcd2c closed that you reviewed more recently? Do these stomp all over them sonically?
Here is a link to my Closed video: ruclips.net/video/3dLT8HHvdyc/видео.html
The comparison about forward mids I made above was just in reference to the X. My Closed is the 2021 version.
Curious, were your thoughts/review on the LCD-X performed with or without EQ? I'm very interested in owning a pair, but I'm concerned about how things will sound without the use of EQ. Thanks!
I don't use EQ.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thanks for commenting. I gotta say, it was a tough choice between the LCD-X and the Ananda without hearing either, but when an opportunity to purchase the X came about for roughly the same price as the Ananda I had to give it a whirl.
