My grandfather had a '71 Montego with a 351 but it was automatic. Anyway, I remember one time when we were in it, he took off from a stoplight, squealing the tires, blasting down the road, and said, "The only way to make a car last is to drive the hell out of it." Then he laughed. He was 70 at the time.

Years ago we had to move my grandfather from Florida to South Carolina to stay with my mother. He was in his 90s and couldn't live alone anymore. My mother asked me what we would do with his old 1970 Ford Country Squire station wagon. I told her I would like to have the 351 Windsor engine that was in it. We were making plans for moving him and selling his house. Mom told Grandpop that I wanted the car and grandpa sorta misunderstood. He got a chair and went out in the driveway and repainted the blue paint and varnished the woodgrain with a BRUSH! It didn't look really bad but it had clearly visible brush strokes etc.. I actually had planned to drive the car back and then pull the motor and trans out. We got mom and grandpa to South Carolina and I stayed behind to show the house to sell it. I tuned the car up and got new tires on it. It ran great and really sounded good when you opened up the 4 barrel. I flipped the breather lid and the mostly burnt out muffler of the single exhaust let it breath pretty good. I took back the rental car and was driving the old wagon around. After a ninety some year old man hand painted it for me, I figured I have to drive it for a while before I strip it of it's running gear.
I had a pile of spare time waiting for the realtor to call me to show the house. I learned that the car had a positive traction rear-end. Grandpa had bought the car in New York to drive to Florida for retirement and I guess it was equipped with the posi for traction in the snow. I put a shift kit in the automatic trans and it would bark the tires hitting second. A few more days past and after having a couple of yard sales of old junk from the house, I was kinda bored. I was in a retirement area near Bradenton and even at the beach it was mostly older folks. I found a muffler shop and got a dual exhaust installed on the old car. I spent several weeks tinkering on the old car waiting for the house to get sold. By the time I left Florida it had a Edelbrock intake, Holley 750 vac secondary carb and a Comp cams 280 Magnum camshaft. The old car would haul butt! It only had about 70,000 miles, even though it was over twenty years old. I actually had a big time with that old car. I drove the old hand painted thing around for a few years.
You know, I actually miss that old thing! Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John

I was 4 years old when my dad bought a '69 Ranch Wagon. My Grandmother said that "It looks like an AMBULANCE!" 😆 Even though all 4 side windows had crank handles, the rear window was key operated electric- the first power window I ever remember. We took summer road trips all across the country with that thing. It had the 351 Windsor- not a racing mill by any means, but it was very dependable & ran like a clock. A few years after I graduated & joined the military, my dad finally traded it off. Nearly 2 decades of coastal Florida salt air was taking it's toll on the body panels. We put 200,000 miles on it and never even had the valve covers off the motor. Thank you for a quick trip in the time machine! 👍🏻

There's nothin like the experience of driving vintage iron like this - the smells, the sounds, the FEEL - total visceral experience even with a "muscle wagon"! I love the spoiler, the front mesh inserts, and the 4 speed really adds to the cool-factor!

You nailed it, dude! And I LOVE wagons! From Nomads to early 80’s Suburbans. I’m an old guy and drove/owned many a muscle car back when they were just 5 - 10 yr old used cars! A Tesla DOES NOT COMPARE to operating a high horse power machine, using both hands and both feet working in unison!

That car got hit and run which was a bummer, any hoo I was starting my young family around this time, I remember the fun I had with the wrecked Rancho and a real clean red 70 Torino wagon, yes the GT hood was put on the wagon, this car reminds me of my old wagon, the hopped up Cleveland the hood scoop and rims ( keystone classics )there have been many Fords since then that I probably can write a book. My current Ford ? A 1988 Ford Thunderbird a one owner car with 70 thousand miles, thanks for the jolt to my memory banks. Hats off to the late great American station wagon

Some sort of HD towing package option. What a great car and great sleeper! Even though this Montego didn’t come like this it was done right and would be a killer tow or road trip car! You can make any kind of power you want with a Cleveland, but I suggest a relatively mild, torquey refresh, 5 speed and just drive the tires off of it. Now, if it really has the small port/valve open chamber heads, I'd have to get some reasonable alloy 3Vs (from anybody but Edelbrock or the Chinese) or even some old iron 4Vs. Some people accuse me of always going overboard with canted valve Fords, though, for some unknown reason. Ahem. That is a car to be thankful for. What a terrific, unique find.

I'm into Cleveland and Clevor (Cleveland heads on a Windsor block) engines, so this is cool machine. The 2V heads with it's smaller valves and ports are well suited for a tow rig. If it was mine I probably wouldn't change anything. I've got a 84 Mercedes turbo diesel wagon but you Montego wagon is next level cool!

That is the most awesome grab… It would be so cool to leave it just the way it is… You know touch up a few things.
But it is hard to resist modifying it

Parents had a 1970 ltd wagon. Similar but obviously different front end and no 4sp! Lol Station wagons were the original SUVs! I love the Merc!!! Get a two horned air cleaner and run duct work to each of the opened up light holes

My dad had a Ford Ranch Wagon version - same year same color. 302 auto. Not quite the same setup as this beast! Although...we'd pull a camper with a family of 7! ...and a dog!

I got a '76 Valiant sedan in triple beige, 318 car with 88k miles, for free. The elderly owner parked it when the heater core & radiator started dripping. I promised the lady I was not going to cut it up or sell it- I've got a pile of leftover parts from my years of buying/selling/bartering in vintage Mopar. 340, 4-speed OD (iron case A/F body size, all conversion pieces), 8.75" 3.55 sure-grip, 12" rotor swap (w/pin calipers), HD cooling, oil cooler from an '80 Aspen cop car, Formula S/A38 suspension, torque boxes, and subframe connectors....there is more, but you get the vibe!
I love the wagon, things like this make me smile.

I built a Grand Marquis with a tr3650, traded it in on a used Honda fit for my fiancee, the owner of the used car dealer loves it so much, he is actually sprucing it up and keeping it. I basically said "i guess chances of my ever buyjng it back are nil" and he grinned a grin and didnt say a word lol

One day in '73, I was hitch-hiking. I was picked up by 2 long haired car guys in a maroon/black interior 69 Olds Vista Cruiser 455 4-speed. The driver said it was all factory, and it looked it to me. Basically a station wagon 442. It happened, you could get them that way. In those days it was easy to just check blocks on the order sheet, however you wanted them. There were some limits, some options weren't possible with others checked, it was (mostly) logical.

My parents had an '83-ish Grand Marquis Colony Park wagon with two seats in the cargo area that folded out and faced each other. They loved it when I, my brother, and my sister sat back there because even when we fought we were simply too far away to bother them very much. 😆😆

Bought a 70' Torino wagon from the back lot (junk trades) section at a local dealer for $100 somewhere around 1995. Still have the orignal 351 quench head engine, 9" posi and her C-6. The lime green paint and vinyl wood grain assured it's sleeper status.

Oh man! This takes me back! I always wanted to build a 70 Cyclone Spoiler wagon! I used to own a 70 Montego (which is the grille in your wagon) with the standard 429, a 70 Cyclone GT with a 429CJ and a 70 Cyclone Spoiler also with the 429CJ and all of them were 4 speeds. I also had a 70 Torino Cobra with a 429 SCJ and a 71 Mach 1 with a 351C 4V, both 4 speeds as well. If you keep the 351C, it will need 4V heads and a good torque building cam. Then a 5 speed conversion and at least 3.25/3:50 gears if you keep it as a driver. I always wanted to build a Torino Cobra wagon too but a Cyclone wagon would be even more unusual. I would have to live vicariously through you did turn it into a Spoiler Wagon!
