I think Dryden would say that too. The book "The Game" by Dryden is a tremendous insight on Hockey. I grew up loving Dryden but learned later that he wasn't the best. But after reading that book I gained a new appreciation for him. He talked about two situations for goalies, the great goalie on a average or good team that wins some games with his "head standing" and the good goalie on a great team whose main job is to not lose the game on bad goals. He was both in his career.
@wildhippy Your comment could have been written by me. I remember that nite. Dryden was my hero and I could not understand why he looked so....ordinary that nite. The first time he played was in the 71 stanley cup, when he totally stoned the Bruins in the first round and the Canadiens went on to beat the North Stars and then the Blackhawks in the final.
He sure outplayed the Canadian goalies. Except 2 games, I thought Canada dominated in terms of our puck possession, grit, checking and quality scoring chances. The Russians skated better, had better passing, were better conditioned, and played better as a team. The officiating in the Soviet Union games were atrocious against Canada. This added to the drama. Greatest series ever in any sport. The difference in style was amazing. The teams were equal in strength but in different ways. Thank the Soviets for making this sport Canadas favourite game. Perfect rivals. Canada was lucky to win. An amazing storybook ending. Don’t stop believing.
