People say transit is slow but it was only 6 mins slower than driving... that’s actually pretty damn good. If you took into account that you often have to look for parking when you drive, transit might even be faster. That being said, the speed of transit really depends on where you are & where you’re going. This is actually a really interesting video; i’d like to see a bunch of trials done in different areas of the city to get a better idea of what’s the best option.
Yup I know with all the youtube videos where they do similar things in London the parking problem usually makes the car even worse still both in terms of time and price as parking is rather a sellers market in London. Basically anything else (Bike, Tube, DLR, Overground, Bus etc) even taxis as you don't have to try and find somewhere to dump the thing on arrival beats the car convincingly on both measures.
Seraphina S yeah European cities tend to have super efficient transit. LA was kind of built around the car though, so i’m impressed that transit was only a few minutes slower than the car. I live in a much smaller Canadian city and it takes twice as long to get anywhere on a bus (because we don’t have any rapid transit)
@@Lafv Even in european cities the fastest way to get around is usually a moped. As those are usually allowed to use bicycle infrastructure, so you can bypass the worst traffic jams entirely and they can keep up with cars within city limits because of the speed limit. I used to commute by moped because it took all of 8 minutes to get from home to work, where it'd take upwards of 40 by car due to traffic. These days I commute on a maxiscooter, so I can't take those shortcuts anymore. But being able to filter through traffic (lane splitting is not legal here, only filtering is) it's still a 12 minute commute because I have to take a longer route. I mean I can physically fit my maxiscooter through the shortcuts, it's just not legal to do so. And no matter how good public transit is, it never leaves from where you are and it doesn't arrive where you need to be, nor does it take the most efficient route between the two.
William Loudermilk I know, I’ve heard of that before. It happened in a lot of cities, including where I live. And then as a result of everyone switching to cars, massive freeways were put in place everywhere. Especially in the US because of how the federal government offered to pay like 90% of the cost for any interstate highway construction.
@@BadassBikerOwns Well, little trick, while you are waiting for your train, know where on the platform at the other end you want to get off at, and then get *on* the train in that spot, so that you don't have to walk extra at the end.

Clive The Führer well, I do believe you. I live in and I’m from Costa Rica, and when you walk downtown San Jose (the capital) you can easily stumble upon most lawmakers and even the president of the country. Not that I like the government ruling right now but I’ve got to admit that it’s a good sign you can encounter politicians and ministers as well so easily.
I believe you. I'm from Finland, and our president had to sit on the stairs at a book fair because all the seats in the auditorium were taken. If you don't believe me, just Google "finnish president sitting on stairs".
I live in a third world country and I believe you. I too get to see high ranking officials every time. I don't know what they look like but I can tell from the police escort or black bmws and mercedes' following them.
They are empty for a reason. Nobody takes the train in California. You'd need to have a very specific living situation for the train to be useful to you
Public transport is the winner for me. 12 minutes slower than the bike which is exhausting, and 6 minutes slower than the car which is stressful. It's not even a question for me. I imagine if highway spending in the middle of the 20th century had gone towards public transport infrastructure it'd be more competitive for time, too. Cycling and public transportation are the way of the future. Private car ownership is going to be a tough habit for the US in particular to break, much to the detriment of the environment and the working class.
I made the same commute by motorcycle going to UCLA daily, it's fast but the stress isn't worth it. Not even an exaggeration, I average 4 close calls a month. What's worse than LA Traffic? LA Drivers.
The best solution is an overpowered ebike, the speed of a car with none of the expense, and the shortcuts and convenience of a bike with none of the sweat
The guy on the metro didnt have a chance. If they would of start from a location where he would jump into the metro asap he would of won. Lol he was walkimg slow to the metro lol
If anything, he only had a chance because they started near a metro station and ended near a metro station. If you went from most spots, you'd have to make transfers, switch to a bus, etc. All these race challenges have to choose a start and finish line to make transit even remotely competitive. Don't get me wrong, I love transit, but not because it's a fast way to get to your destination.
And tbf tho that's a lot of time to get work done. Can't be on your laptop while driving or biking, so even though its an extra 10-20 mins it's a much better use of time
I biked from Venice beach to downtown and I was whizzing by cars in traffic until I got doored. Not a fun experience. Definitely 10X more dangerous biking but it can be faster
Your work commute must have a good metro connectivity , I lived in Lawndale and my office was 4.5 miles in El Segundo, right next to LAX and if you used public transport you would have to take a bus and a train plus walking and your total commute time would be about 1 hour and 15 minutes

Metro = no burning gas and sitting in traffic jams + no sweaty body and tiredness at the end - just 15 mins more than car for 13 miles...... I would argue metro is the best way overall to travel at rush hour :)
I keep a foldable bike (or two, if my wife is with me) in my quite big diesel car I use to commute from suburbs, to save precious time I loose in the traffic jams and looking for a parking slot, also to not wasting fuel. I never thought that I save a planet by it LOL Yes, it is genius thing, especially electric one if you are strong enough to lift it (my wife prefers a normal one).
Yeah honestly I don't think anyone would mind if they just ripped off more top gear ideas. Obviously many of them are way too expensive, but over the years Top Gear has come up with countless little games and adventures to do with cars that are totally worth revisiting. Even without the unlimited budget and access to any car they want there's still lots of fun and creative stuff to do.

@Bob Ross with airpods well they just cut the walk from your apartment to parking lot, or in most cases from your house or apartment to street parking which is minimal in most cases

@@josemorenoporras7506 nah, you can use it to boost your speed. I can easily hit 30 on a flat piece of road for a sustained period with an electric, whereas without it's just bursts of that speed. Add in that a nice electric is real cheap, especially when you factor in fuel, insurance, or what have you and it's just an outright improvement on a bike.
I did something like this in Chile a year ago: 40 minutes for buses, 55 minutes for bikes, and 30 minutes for cars in a 8.8km conmute. But every vehicle has its downsides. With buses you need to know where you are going or you'll get lost (almost all buses are blue) and they can get very crowed. With cars you'll spend more money in maintenance, fuel and parking; and you need a safe place to leave it. Bikes need to be locked if you leave it alone, and you have to drive with caution to avoid being the crashed one.

Before watching the video: I bet trains win. From experience living in NYC- trains are the best way to go, as long as they're frequent enough. Edit: Raghav just about matched the time without breaking a sweat. With some actual hustle, he would've totally won. The slow walking killed his time- he had to have spent 10 minutes just leaving the parking ramp. I guess in LA, the Metro is only only for people who are chill AF.
And you have to find parking, or be all sweaty and out of breath if you bike. Trains win here, it's just the competition is a bit biased for the other two.
The most ideal is a combo of bike and train. For most American cities, train stops aren’t that frequent and most of the time, your workplace will be a long walk from the station. Just buy a foldable bike and ride it to and from the stations.
Car = comfiest but could be stressful Bicycle = healthiest but sweatiest Public Transport = slow but you can be drunk Motorcycle = fast and anti-stress
the start is flawed. Why must the train rider walk to the station but the driver doesn’t have to walk through parking garage to car? Should do this again fairly.
Existing in the age of smartphones and podcasts makes traffic bearable and educational. Still wouldn't free drive around the city unless it's late night
Best in any dense city is ebike. No astronomical costs like a car or motorcycle (devaluation, registration, insurance, maintenance, gas...), little sweat yet you're still getting some exercise and fresh air, absolute fastest, can lanesplit and use both car roads _and_ bike paths, no planning around predetermined routes like you need to with public transit. Nothing even comes close.
I loved this. I think the takeaway should be to use a hybrid of the transportation methods as opposed to driving everywhere. I learned this in high school when I started driving. I lived pretty close to the school (5 miles one way) and traffic right after school would be horrendous, so I just started walking home after school let out if I didn't want to catch the bus and stay after school later. The only time I really drove to school was on Fridays since I could go elsewhere when it let out. I still do this in adulthood since I live walking distance from work. That was an underrated benefit of the pandemic. It let people work from home and commute less. Which really changes the life you live for the better. Lol.
@@chickeyy1792 Well... Bike and Motorcycle have same safety features I think... I believe the most acciden involving both are being crashed, hence Motorcycle is better since it is larger and more noticeable. If you are crashing by yourself in a crowded street, you are in the wrong for speeding on the crowded. If you are crashing while speeding on straight and literally nothing around, just sell your motorcycle, you can't even drive straight XD
Here in Denmark the train network has wagons specific for transporting your bike. So you can ride your bike to the train station, ride the train with your bike, and then ride your bike from the train station to your destination. Its awesome!
Judging by his name, he has the right idea. I'm the same way. When delivering a load to the bay area, LA, NY, Miami, DC, Chicago, I dont go anywhere near the city till after midnight and before 5. Waste too many driving hours sitting in traffic.
I've tested this myself(different city and country) and at best it took me 1hour and 5 minutes by public transport to travel from where I lived and into the city. The distance was 27km/16,77miles. I spent 45 minutes on a bicycle, and had more than enough time to get showered and ready for work, feeling fresh and ready for the day instead of a train wreck like most. By car it took me at least 1 hour and 30 minutes, and on motorcycle about 50 min to 1 hour on average.
I agree the train won. You counted the time he had to walk to and from the stations, plus he wasn't in much of a rush walking. It's also, the most economical. Dude in car probably burned at least $5 in gas (one way), wear and tear, cost of driving the car, insurance, parking, etc. Biking is really not much of an option considering the distance, and for many not practical or it's not physically possible. Biking in urban L.A. also is probably the most dangerous.
Well, One thing I remember from the past year is that, I took a flight from Delhi to Mumbai which was 2 hrs for 800miles and from my airport to back home home was 3hrs 15 minutes for 20miles.

@William Loudermilk LA has never had the best public transportation system lol

I didn’t know LA even had a subway, and neither do a lot of people who live there, so that might be it
They are empty for a reason. Nobody takes the train in California. You'd need to have a very specific living situation for the train to be useful to you
@@SoulEraser000 Here in San francisco we do. In fact i cant even find a seat on BART when im coming back on work.

Sam yesss. I love my car. It’s an amazing luxury. I even think driving is fun. But it’s a terrible way to commute every day.

Arnulfo Aldaco not impossible, just dangerous.

The guy on the metro didnt have a chance. If they would of start from a location where he would jump into the metro asap he would of won. Lol he was walkimg slow to the metro lol
That wouldn't be all that realistic. Does the subway stop outside your house?
If anything, he only had a chance because they started near a metro station and ended near a metro station. If you went from most spots, you'd have to make transfers, switch to a bus, etc. All these race challenges have to choose a start and finish line to make transit even remotely competitive.
Don't get me wrong, I love transit, but not because it's a fast way to get to your destination.

I think an electric bike is slower overall in just 1 trip. Other thing is biking more hours or in a very hilly area.
Most people don't have either of those
@@daduncker20D Nothing stopping most people from getting them, though.

Trains win here, it's just the competition is a bit biased for the other two.
lol
The most ideal is a combo of bike and train. For most American cities, train stops aren’t that frequent and most of the time, your workplace will be a long walk from the station. Just buy a foldable bike and ride it to and from the stations.

Lol.
