This is the exact technique that somehow I naturally used when I was caught in storm-like conditions off Hingham. I had paddled so hard for so long that I felt my heart was going to give out. I flopped back on the deck, readying to pull my legs out to make a swim for it. Incredibly, I felt the kayak stabilize. This technique also allowed to rest - recovering enough in order to paddle to a quieter area in order to land safely. It was unforgettable!

Thank you so much, Paulo, for sharing your expertise. I'm a sea-kayak beginner at 55 and I'm learning so much from your videos. Your tips on edging and turning the kayak with ease are worth gold. Great channel. 👍 ❤

thank you so much for bringing indigenous values into such a colonized space. it is such a surprise and pleasure to run into your videos. you brought me to tears when you said the kayak is not a tool to conquer - it is something to help you understand you belong to nature.
this is the piece that is missing in so much of the mainstream education around the outdoors. as a global indigenous person who was displaced from my homelands, i don't have access to my ancestral knowledge, and have relied on very colonized people for education to learn how to hike, backpack, kayak, and many other things. i feel lucky to have found your videos and hope to take an in-person lesson with you soon.

Thank you sir for all your videos. I’m 61 and have truly fallen in love with the Sea Kayak because of how well I now can control it in any condition. Being confident because of learning these movements / skills. Has truly increased the joy of being on the water !! Again ! Thank you !!

I found this to be an extremely informative video. Thank you for producing it. Demonstrating techniques both in and out of the water is super helpful.
Having a recovery tool in addition to rolling is wonderful.

Cheers Paulo, love how at ease you are in your kayak, like it is an extension of you and not just a boat.

Been following your channel religiously. When I was thinking about moving to a Greenland paddle, I saw this channel and convinced me to get one and I'm loving it.

Your best video yet! Keep it up with all your extra tips of where you need to concentrate your force and when. Like, "think of taking up space on the water with your back, flat on the water."

First of all, thank you. And now I'll try to explain why I do like this video. I am from Germany, so it's Kind of tricky for me to find the correct words...
This is a really good way of getting back upright again... thank you, I subscribed right away and liked this video.
Relax and take the challange of getting out of a dangerous position in a way that doesn't need extreme good coordination underwater while staying cool in the middle of a dangerous situation that lead to this head down position in the first place. I ask myself If I could easily teach this move to the 'come on I just want to kayak' people. I usually give the advice to simply 'get out of that boat' without thinking about what it may look like. After all it's a boat that can be replaced but you only have one life...
Maybe I should ask: do you practice yoga? Remember that state of mind, relax and get back upright. You have the skills and just need to connect that.
If you don't have that skill yet, here ist a really good video for you...

My fear of capsizing is because I physically cannot handle a roll. I have a low back fusion that reduces my hip flexion and sideways strain capability that... to this point two years into kayaking... has sharply limited my freedom when it comes to truly rough conditions, as well as offshore paddling. Then I come to this video. And I watch you lay down on the water while still in your boat... Granted I have a different type of boat, a rotomold 17' sea kayak, but I still don't see why I couldn't do this. Something to practice with one of my more experienced friends. As for flip recovery... I "eject"... a phrase applied by my combat fighter pilot father... and do a paddle float heel hook reentry. I've got it down to barely a minute to be back in my boat, even tired and sore from all day on the water. My back doesn't mind it, even my 10 year old daughter is doing it almost without effort. Thank you for this... you are helping me become a better, safer, more confident kayaker.

Thank you for your videos! It seems that kayak fit is very important, but is it achievable to get a good kayak fit when all we can access are rental kayaks? Very very few people in my country own their own kayaks and we don’t have much choice in what we rent (not the best kayaks obviously, many of them don’t have thigh braces or adjustable foot pegs). I’ve never ever felt comfortable in any rental kayak as my thighs are always jammed up and I realise after watching your video I cannot rotate my torso or hips freely at all. I’d get numb legs within minutes of getting in 😭 Would you have any tips on this?

How about a wider Kayak and or some small pontoons on the side...perhaps a couple of fenders attached to the side of the kayak?

Can i get away with a 16 foot long and 22,8 inch wide touring kayak as a beginner? I'm 6 foot long and the cockpit length of the kayak is 33 inches. I have some experience in a Point 65 Mercury kayak. Will i have issues with primary stabilization in boat this size? thanks

Wish I could balance brace. No matter what, I end up head down. I've tried this in traditional skin on frame kayaks too. Don't float without a PFD either... just sink. And I'm more flexible that most and have very good core strength. Oh well.
