  • Getting your guard passed and getting stuck in Side Control in BJJ is never something someone wants to happen. And preventing this situation is something I get questions about all the time. So in this Brazilian Jiu-jitsu technique video I'll show you a simple grip fighting idea from the bottom to improve guard retention as well as stopping the guard pass.
    The big focus is controlling the inside position with our grips which is always something I focus on. Next I touch on the placement and positioning of my hands that I've found to be useful for me.
    By controlling the arm that they use to control my head I'm able to stop them from securing a strong side control position and at the same time able to make more space for my escape.
    I end the video with a BJJ challenge to implement this technique / idea into your game.
    Hope you enjoyed the video and I hope it helps your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game. Thanks for watching.

    Setting aside the excellent content for a moment, “Iron Squirrel” has got to be one of my favorite names for a position, by far. Tickles me every time it comes up in a video. 😁

    EDITOR: Those speed ramps during the silent parts (transitions to next position) make it flow so much better! IDK why everyone else isn't doing that in instructional videos. Saves so much time and keeps people engaged. Also, looks cool. Iron Squirrel in 8x speed. Brilliant.

    I like the idea of working/perfecting small little bite size pieces, I’m gona try that next time I’m sparring at my gym. As a white belt it can sometimes feel overwhelming when my partner is like “oh just don’t let _____ happen” and I’m like bruh what do you mean how am I supposed to casually do that?!?!

    I love this technique. I use it primarily to prevent the cross face because it's my least favorite thing in the world. This coupled with a frame on their neck makes being in bottom side so much easier.

    I can identify with this philosophy. You don't have to do a million things at the same time. I once found myself 180 degrees beside my partner with my leg tied up. My partner was going aggressively for my head and I couldn't adequately defend against both legs simultaneously, so I quickly figured out that controlling the leg closet to me effectively blocked the other leg aswell.

    Would be mind, at some point, doing a video regarding gis? How do you chose one? How do you wash it/keep it clean? Do you wash it after every class? What if I' m training in the morning and in the evening (since a lot of gym offer both), do I need to wear a different gi to each class? I just feel like there's a lot of confusing things about gis that new (and experienced for that matter) guys make and it'd be cool if you could cover the gi etiquette in bjj.

    • @alwaysastudent
      @alwaysastudent 4 года назад

      CanadianTwistedIce Yes... PLEEEEEEEASE wash your gi after every class!!!! Wash the belt too!!! There's a TON of bacteria, etc. that live in them after grappling. If you don't wash them you run a bigger risk of ringworm, staph, etc. If you can get more than one gi, that is good.
      I add hydrogen peroxide when I wash the belt and gi. It is very helpful. Washing it in the washing machine is always good; I also put them in the dryer. If you REALLY want to make sure it doesn't shrink, air dry it if you can.
      I think your request (for the video) is a good idea though, because there are plenty of people out there who have the same concerns/questions. Be well...

    I've been rolling and showing my brother the basics of jujitsu, everytime we roll tho he goes straight for a submission never trys to set anything up and not patient in any position. Do you have students like this and if so how do you handle it??????? is this (aggresivnes)a good or bad thing???? cuz it keeps me on my toes but also leaves him open to subs, but once he has more skill would this be a good approach?????? I almost feel it's just cuz we are family so he's trying to be dominant???? I am the older brother

    • @framedbysteven
      @framedbysteven 4 года назад +3

      Brant Hudson Lol just sub him until he gets pissed and starts thinkin

    • @adrianarroyo937
      @adrianarroyo937 4 года назад

      It's good and bad. It's good because you should be always hunting the submission. But it's bad because "position before submission". If he has no control, it would be pretty hard for him to hit the submissions consistently. I would argue that for noobs is bad. Once he has the skill to secure and control the positions, it would become a good thing

  • @swedbp1

    At my gym some one told me to "stop the leading edge" and he didn't seem to care if it was a leg, are or head. I'm pretty new so I'm not clear on what he was talking about. Thoughts?

    • @stantoncochran536
      @stantoncochran536 4 года назад +2

      swedbp1 I’m not Chewy, but he meant to push against whatever part of their body is getting close to your side to resquare yourself so that your legs are between you and your partner again.

    • @ClipsFromMaine
      @ClipsFromMaine 4 года назад +2

      Basically what I assume he meant, also. So in this video when he attempts to establish side control, the “leading edge” would be the arm Chewy grabs. “Leading Edge” translates in my head to something along the lines of “the closest stable, and / or attacking, body part. Just my thoughts on it, hope it made sense.
