I think the biggest reason for these ratings being wrong is that no one had accounted for energy being such a strong aggro deck; rn so many strategies are not playable because they get run over
ried said it but ill bounce off of him a little. I really hate the modern sets, a format which was supposed to be players picking and finding combos and synergies from magics history turned into a (as he said) standard-like format where the newest modern horizon cards will completely dictate the format with it's power creep and if you don't buy the new cards you are left behind in the format.
I think it could have been interesting if cards that came through standard were always legal in Modern, and MH actually rotated when the next MH set came out, but only that set. Each direct to Modern set having to outdo the last while making the old core of Modern more and more irrelevant is awful.
@lexist7 go watch any reaction from any content creators at the announcement of MH1 being a product. Jovial, the community has finally broken the backs of WotC and they are giving us the direct to Modern product we've been demanding. Don't rewrite history, this is what the player base literal demanded and now that all the stuff Maro used to warn that they didn't want to add direct to Modern products to the format have come to be now they have remorse.
6:10 I want to point out that Sneaky Snacker is being played in Madness Burn in Pauper. I get that Pauper isn't Modern, but if you're going to call out the pre-ban of Cranial Ram earlier you might as well acknowledge that Snacker has found a home in at least one constructed format.
What made modern interesting was the organic power level that resulted from pooling the best cards from so many older sets. Designing cards specifically for modern feels like it just defeats the entire purpose? It's just becomes another rotating format like standard at that point.
I see a people say the players wanted direct to modern sets and that is true. But we didn’t want format sweeping meta breaking sets. We wanted jund to get an upgrade to be playable. We wanted fish to get some cards to be revived. Affinity to get help etc. instead we got new archetype meta every 2 years or emergency bans.
I basically stopped playing Modern after Horizons 2. The way that that set took over the whole format was crazy. You NEEDED to drop $600 for the elementals, Ragavan, etc. just to be competitive. And now Horizons 3 has weeded those cards out through bans or new cards. Just crazy what Modern has become.
On release, mh2 cards were not that expensive. Most of the mythics sans ragavan were around $10. Same with mh3. The difference, is that MH2 was a ton of fun and basically mh3 has been a nightmare.
Remember during spoiler season how everyone was calling it commander horizons 3 and thought most the cards were unplayable in modern (and that the only great card were in golgari so that Yawg would be tier 0)? I remember.
It was not really possible to see that all the new energy cards would be so powerful when combined. Honestly 'Boros Energy' is a misnomer. It should be called 'Boros MH3 constructed plus the one ring' o
I liked MH3 in Pauper overall (Cranial Ram aside). The addition of cards like Jolted Awake, the common fetches, Malevolent Rumble, Writhing Chrisalis, Basking Broodscale, Refurbished Familiar, etc added a lot of cool options/decks to the format imo
Linebreaker has appeared in an 'eldrazi aggro' list along with new cards It That Heralds The End, and sometimes Glaring Fleshraker. Versions of the list tend to swap between nulldrifter and world breaker as part of their 7-drops suite for Ugin's labyrinth. It's not been popular the entire time but it has made numerous challenge top8s and more than one actual challenge win. It recently picked up some popularity again with the new 7 mana eldrazi from foundations.
As an Arena player, MH3 killed Historic and Timeless for me. I liked that the previous anthologies cherry picked MH1 and MH2 cards for the client, but dropping MH3 wholly onto Arena was, in my opinion, disastrous.
I hope they actually add all of MH1 and MH2, it feels weird going to look for Urza, Urza's Saga, Murktide, and not seeing them when lots of other MH1/2 cards are on there and prevalent.
I remember thinking "why isn't anyone talking about this card?" when stifle is a thing. Foil playset at the open for rock bottom pricing.....just wish the finishing on these foils were better I would have bought more.
Eldrazi line breaker has definitely seen a lot of play in mtg online. It’s great in a gruul eldrazi aggro deck. Pairs well with Kozileks command. Great for giving your big eldrazis haste as you cast them as well. It’s a very good card that may not see tournament play but definitely great in modern. Especially with the release of sire of seven deaths in foundations.
A note about you mentioning 8-cast being "banned" in legacy at 12:10. Nothing has been banned from the shell for as long as I've been playing it (3 years). It's just not popular anymore. Pre-LOTR it was, imo, a top 3 deck. Now, with Bowmasters in the format it's HARD to get the engine started. It's a rare deck now. Rip to one of my favorites.
Invert polarity is my favourite card from the set and while it may not have turned into a staple in modern, it is a staple in the high powered Cube I regularly draft. A one mana upshift in price compared to a regular counter for a potentially huge reward 50% of time is great and makes it a pretty fun card
I use to love modern then WotC decided to print straight to modern sets that were so much better than anything else that it ruined the format so I stopped playing it. I usually only look at modern horizon sets to see if anything looks good for my commander decks. Beyond that, I avoid them. Such a shame.
Personally I really loved the idea of usuable energy cards. And I have a mono red energy build that use unstable amulet to basically ping the opponent to death if a game goes long but the white energy cards are simply ridiculous.
Everyone always underestimates the power of a good stifle, and now they've upgraded it to also counter artifacts. Only came back into magic pretty much missing the entire Modern development, but MH has more or less written it's own One-Up every new set, so I can only really hope what shakes out for the OP decks is at least fun or funny. Ironically wound up drafting some Boros Energy rare staples (Ajani, Guide of Souls and an Ocelot Pride) but since I'm not jumping into Modern for the full Energy Synergy pile I somewhat wished for the splashy/Commander Eldrazi that were put in the niche after playing Set Posterboys/Girls/Abominations. It's still insane that they printed colourless but self-enabling impact tremors with Glaring Fleshraker and even just playing sealed it was a nightmare of value, can't believe they handed Artifacts it's own grapeshot
I think the Boros Energy cards are the most egregious examples as it’s not like you could take the new energy cards and slot them in with the Kaladesh energy cards and have a deck. It was all just MH3 cards. You know what was a great MH card? Blazing Rootwala. You had to reach into Magic’s past to come up with a full Madness deck.
@8:41 Has Cancel ever seen play outside of Standard? I feel not. Cause the floor of Invert Polarity is Cancel, about half the time (if you can random you ‘coin’).
Kappa cannoneer also is played a good bit now in affinity modern decks in mtgo. I play against it a fair bit. Not the strongest but it definitely has a place in modern
It is interesting how modern as format is suffering because of The One Ring, but MH3 gets most of the blame. Also, the energy mechanic is mentioned, when the strongest cards in Boros Energy aren't even energy cards. Ajani is probably the best example for this. A 2 mana card, that is stronger than many 4cc planeswalkers. Brings a body, can deal insane damage while adding more bodies to the board etc. Just compare that to, let's say Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, a perfectly strong token generating PW. So why does it bother me? Because the narrative drives ban decisions. And when the narrative misses the point, you get bad bans.
@@MrDamojak Which one? Guide of Souls is a good one drop, but hardly more menacing then Ragavan. You can 1 for 1 it. Lastly, we have Amped Raptor, which is the only actual 2 for 1, a riff on the cascade mechanic. Which is the only energy card, somewhat busted. But not because of energy, but because it is like cascade. I say: You could ban them all, it wouldn't really change much.
MH3 kind of overcorrected for White and somewhat for Red in the the color pie for modern, pre MH3 sultai colors and some red were most of the best decks and there was not as much white in top tier decks. This was really brought foeth after the Nadu ban.
Triggered abilities are the issue. Not only etb but all them. Mh4 needs a Pithing Needle but for triggered ablilities. 1 mana, name a card, triggered abilities of the named card don't trigger.
Honest question: Aside from the obvious answer of “Don’t make Horizons sets”, how impactful should they be? The common statement is that people aren’t happy because they’ve made Modern a rotating format due to power creep, but for how long should any given deck be expected to remain powerful before stagnation sets in? Is it a healthy position to expect that your deck will be relevant forever? If it isn’t, then what’s the acceptable rate of change?
im amazed that reid gave pride a 2. sure its an 1/1 but it also is one mana makes another 1/1 body the next turn if it attacks and lives to end step and only snowballs (very quickly) from there.
Me personally I love phlage i think it is decently designed better than kroxa worse than uro but didn't ho through standard so it's ok for it to be good
They knew Energy was an egregious mechanic that was difficult to make fair and they still went back to it, probably because it is one of Maro's babies. I hope this is enough to shunt it off to the top of the storm scale.
Theres lots of types of cards, especially lore callbacks that you can't easily find a place to put anywhere else outside of commander/legacy only. But everything else about these sets just make me sad.
Wotc: “ Hey, you know that mechanic that destroyed standard pre fires era and saw lots of bannings to power down the mechanic? How about we put it in modern”
I just don’t understand how WOTC made the mistake about energy in standard where there isn’t a meaningful way to interact with it. AND THEN THEY DID IT AGAIN. Like when innistrad came out and a bunch of graveyard strategies were introduced - they included a bunch of graveyard hate in the set. Energy just doesn’t have that TWICE NOW.
I still think if they want to have modern sets they need to not make brand new cards, they can re release stuff, or add stuff from previous to modern sets, maybe, possibly add say 4 new cards at best
Most of MH3 can go but I do like psychic frog and the blue mdfcs from the set which make mono blue belcher better. I agree with Reid that MH3 has made quite a few strategies irrelevant and that’s something I don’t like for the format. Modern is supposed to be a format where you can play with the deck you love and you can do reasonably well with in tournaments. I hope modern becomes more balanced after the ban update later this month

The modern horizons sets were meant to freshen up a stale format in addition to making it more accesible to new players. That said, the power creep from the sets, with wizards trying to up the ante with every new set, is just outrageous.
But if they make the Modern Horizons sets lower power level, people complain that they "aren't really designed for Modern", say "these cards look like they've been designed for Commander", and mockingly call them "Commander Horizons" instead. Actually, people already did that during MH2 and MH3 preview seasons.
I absolutly understand the distaste for mh3, personally I have only played modern for 2 ish years so I'm only used to this mh powerlevel and currently my previous played decks in Yawg is still playable in some shape. Creativity is a bit obsolete but not really because of mh3. Other than that on a huge positive note, this set let me finally play eldrazi like i wanted. I just can not enjoy TOR, Karn and Tron lands, no idea why. But now with labyrinth, eldrazi is absolutely playable/competitve with the smaller creatures and in a midrange shell, looking more like eldrazi winter/post winter. Of course I know this was a hated era, but I love eldrazis so just happy I can play them in my favourite format. I mean I feel like Temur aggro with Linebreaker is pretty playable.
Its 2024. Weve known not to listen to CFBs initial takes on a limited format for literally 20+ years. No offense 😅 Edit:🤔...wow. thats a long time. Congrats on that longevity.
Wow, why are you being so careful with these statements in the beginning? Almost like a rotation, may be too powerful? Are you afraid to speak truth to power here? Protect your reputation with WotC? MH3 was a huge mistake, WAS a rotation, WAS too powerful. No maybes about it.
Consign To Memory seems like a must-include in Stifle Dreadnaught decks. I personally like overpowered cards and prefer a lot of overpowered options to bannings. But that's just me.
If MH3 was at the same price point as MH2 I would love it. It’s nearly twice as much to play limited in paper. That makes it feel even more rough on the power level. “Buy this overpriced product because we made your old cards obsolete”

Wow, why are you being so careful with these statements in the beginning? Almost like a rotation, may be too powerful? Are you afraid to speak truth to power here? Protect your reputation with WotC? MH3 was a huge mistake, WAS a rotation, WAS too powerful. No maybes about it.
fanatic of rhonas is at least good in MTGA historic
Consign To Memory seems like a must-include in Stifle Dreadnaught decks. I personally like overpowered cards and prefer a lot of overpowered options to bannings. But that's just me.
Nice Video!
brutally honest, misread basically everything in the set.
If MH3 was at the same price point as MH2 I would love it. It’s nearly twice as much to play limited in paper. That makes it feel even more rough on the power level. “Buy this overpriced product because we made your old cards obsolete”
Just dropped Modern with MH3. I know many others.
Rumble "a little bit better than i expected"
Lol ok
Kozilek's Unsealing is actually deadly in a U Affinity build. Especially when dropped on Turn 2.
And if it’s not in turn two, there’s just better things you can do.
MH3 made Modern, Legacy and Vintage worse.
MH4 will set everything straight 😂
You can’t play a lot of MH1 or MH2 because MH3 is just that strong
