Toni is a very good vocalist, but her only weakness is her low register, she pushes her tongue back, larynx down and soft palate up to force this comical mumbly sound, that's why her lows have nothing in common tonally with the rest of her voice. A rich mezzo like Toni could easily sing down to A2 or lower in her real voice. She uses fry sometimes too and it's actually a better way. I guess she did it to emulate Anita Baker or to stand out, but she really didn't need that.
