PS My potted Lady of Shallot made it splendidly through her first winter. Even though I'm in Tennessee (retired here from Massachusetts) I did have to cover her as well as my hydrangeas several times because the nights dipped so low. In fact, my hydrangeas are covered again right now because of a freeze watch. Like you, mine had a rough time last winter and a pitiful amount of blooms in the summer. That's why I'm being extra careful with them. I've been super busy with Spring clean up the past ten days. I'm tired, but it's a Happy Tired!
You and Gardener Ben from UK are two of the most wholesome and calming places I found so far in the internet. He is also a David Austin rose person - I would LOVE to see you both talking about roses and differences between mild UK and quite harsh Connecticut.

Does the black plastic bags have holes so air can get into it? You don’t want moldy leaves.
Yes, there are 3 or 4 holes in them at the bottom.
We’re getting a couple cold freezing nights Thursday/Friday. I’m a little worried about the hydrangea buds.
You can do a quick night coverings on tops, if freeze is going to be tough….
