The best book ever is. Chilton's repair and tune up guide, Volkwagen all models 1949-1971. I had it when I was a kid, sold it with my bug long ago. Now that I have another bug 40 years later, I found the book on the Samba. All torque specs. included. It's hard cover, and light green in color. Great video!

Nice video the beam looks great, if you do it again on your next project put a ratchet strap around the torsion arms to pull them together then you can just slide the king links in 👍🏼

What an awesome feeling of accomplishment you must have felt getting err done. You have come a long way CT and it's these small things that are letting you shine and although they maybe baby steps it still proves that your getting it down.

It's a beautiful thing :) I work alone 99% of the time. I have learned to keep things like clamps around for squeezing things together etc. Next time clamp a 2 X 4 or whatever on the table so you can leave your part on the table and have something to push against instead of using your foot with it all on the floor. Looking forward to your next installment.

Top job ct I was shouting small ratchet belt for the spindles and torsion arm ,suppose it's easy watching from my sofa keep up the good work.
I have to say, you're coming along nicely since you started. There are still times when I feel like reaching into the screen to help you, and knowing so many ideas to make what you're doing a breeze. But you will learn as you move forward I am sure. One thing I see you say so much is, "I'll just finger tighten this and come back later on and torque it". You have to make sure you actually do get back to each and every bolt, nut and whatever. Because even one missed bolt or nut is an accident waiting to happen.
You also talk about checking how things are supposed to fit and assemble. Why don't you have the book, diagram or whatever, sitting in your shop to offer that assembly idea while you are working on any portion of the VW? And then you won't have any disassembly issues later on fitting something together wrong. Just an idea.
Keep the videos coming. I am learning more about VW's then I ever thought I would...

you put the rubber washer on the right way then it fits into the metal washer. The lip. seals the grease from coming out as much. Some will squeeze out anyway
This is very helpful. You've used some great imorivision and did a great job. One thing I saw on another video was adding some white paint on the centre divet do as you see it when putting in the divet screw. The remming was also very nicely shown. But this was a great video. 👍

the reason you lube the torsions is to keep them from making noise. I dont put grease all the way through the tube I leave the old grease in there to protect the old beam. Only do I clean it out when I am putting in a adjuster.

I would not have put grease on the stop because it will slide off. I use wd 40 because it will dry out or soap and water.

@@CTmoog Also greases with mineral oil base soften the rubber and make it grow in size and degrade. Here is an example what happens with the rubber after it was lubed with CV joint grease: www.drive2.com/l/4838164/ It's a russian site but auto-translate is not that bad.

Put the bolts in from the top,nuts on the bottom, that way if they do work loose gravity will help keep them in place till you get new nuts

Hi. If I see correctly, you have mounted the lock to the screw incorrectly. One fin should be bent as you have towards the body, while the other should be bent towards the head of the screw. The point is for the screw to unscrew itself.

Hi ct, I would only have used only minimal grease for lubrication, then when its all together do a proper grease via the grease nipples. That way you minimise wastage. Thumbs up buddy.

On the torque specs. Been a long time since I had to turn a wrench but at one time the bolt heads had a series of marks indicating ft. Lbs of torque. Look in your manuals index and it may be listed or even a Chilton's repair manual.
Looking good on the rebuild, won't be long before you get back to the sheet metal. Hope you and yours get through the beer virus safely.
Looks great! Sometimes it's easier to put the spindle on the arms then install it on the beam as one unit. Also if you still need spring plates I've got a stack of them. I can send you down a pair in appreciation of your videos and to help keep your project going!

When you have to insert some rubber on some metal part, you better use soap. It will slide into position and it will dry and stay quiet. If you use grease instead it will be moving there like forever.

Nice work CT! Obvious or noob question: Why do the bushings need to be reamed out? Why not just make them the right ID?
I thought the same thing...Why can't they just make them fit from the start? I don't know...Maybe someone else does? Good question!
@@CTmoogHammering on brass changes the shape. So basically you're manufacturering your own bushings to spec.
When you drive bushings in like that, they will swell slightly. Reaming will bring them back to precise dimensions. Reamers are used extensively in machining work to make precise sized holes.

Another way, and perhaps a better way would be to use a bolt, nut, and washers and just press it in with a wrench, that's how I did it on my 60 dbl cab
thanks for the video lol isnt hindsight great i see there is rust converter in the shop now . its nice not to see you cleaning the front axel assembly part 4 and to see some actual reassembly.. when your "clamping" with the c clamp like you did breaking the casting is a probability... generally we backyard mechanics would find a socket large enough to fit the shaft and use that to transfer the load to the collar area instead of the arms....and re the greasing the torsion bars.. arent you going to fill the tubes with grease when assembeled? or is the grease just to lube points of motion good luck with the project
