Ryan B hi Ryan? Being composed of carbon it helps to keep the compost 'sweet', acts as a filtre, keeps the soil open and for epyphytes it can act as a medium in it'own right. Hope that helps....

Sometimes I use a little homemade compost but not as a rule.
