Nine Blades usually plays during combat, specifically to replace the normal combat soundtrack when the player does big dmg to the enemy. It's used to change the feel and tone of combat. Ive sometimes realized the song was playing during combat and just sat there to listen.
Yeah, I started noticing that it starts playing either at big dmg or when we have taken down a couple of enemies and it looks like we are more to be winning. Makes you feel powerful and hyped :D
Actually, Nine Blades starts with some specific combat encounters, in particular the first Goblin/Grove fight, and the fight at Last Light Inn. However, if you start winning, it transitions to Sixteen Strikes, which is a slightly more upbeat "version" of Nine Blades. This happens with a few other songs throughout the game as well.
so also to add some context, while Nine Blades (in 9/8) is playing and you roll a critical hit (the damage from rolled dice is doubled), the song transitions to a track called Sixteen Strikes, meaning you crit so hard the music doubled as well lmao.
I also like that the FIRST time you hear this is the fight at the grove gate. Count your allies. Your crew: 4 Aradin's crew: 3 Wyll and Zevlor. 9 people against the goblins.
In an interview for a bulgarian tv show Slavov said that he wanted to incorporate a lot of the typical odd meter time signatures which are very common in bulgarian traditional music (7/8,11/16,9/8 etc... there's even style that doesn't have a rhythm signature at all xD). Thus creating a feel that something is not "quite normal" in his own words. Good stuff
9/8 is such a difficult timing to integrate in this more classical genre, especially since it is also using traditional middle eastern instruments like saz, darbuka and lute. Bravo in marrying all into this masterpiece.
All "combat" music gets looped and interchanged in the game. A DnD round of combat takes "6 seconds" despite people conversing/ or thinking about what they want to do, the narrator/ game master effectively weaves each turn into 6 seconds. Borislav Slavov sought to incorporate this concept into the combat sections of the game, to keep things interesting and drawing in the players attention without them getting bored. Certain pieces of music will shuffle in to replace others when certain events take place, (doing really well/getting critical attacks against enemies, etc) It makes fights feel more dynamic and fluid. They did an outstanding job with the music for this game, and how they use it.
As combat music, Nine Blades has the classical emotional motifs that tell a story of a melee througout the piece. There's the initial anticipation, with a sense of danger and anxiety of the clash. Then it picks up into a heroic engagement with the male chorus, a sense of determination and forward momentum. Then the turn-around, a key/rhythm change to show a doubtful moment, which ends into a cresendo of brass. A moment of despair, and the original message of determination repeated in a wistful manner. Finally the salvation, the female lead starting into the near silence in a striking and clear fashion, and hope restored with the male chorus repeating the original theme of determination.
I love this song, it plays in battles, after you've killed an ennemy or landed a huge critical wich turns the battle in your favor. You really feel it in the song.
Hands down the best song in the game in my opinion. Especially with several of its sections faded and mixed during combat, not only looping, but reacting to actions and combatants falling. It is one thing to listen to it as a song, but a completely different experience listening to it in combat.
Holy shit! Thank you, sir! I think you dropped this 👑 With almost 500 hours in this game I feel confident in saying this is my favorite piece from the soundtrack.
In general, I want to say how cool the Larians are to include so much music in the game, literally for every event. It's the size of a whole concert. This music plays when your group starts to win in a game, as if to represent that you are fighting as one...
Glad you enjoyed this one! It's one of my faves from BG3 (clearly).💙It's like you said with Raphael's Final Act; it continuously gives me goosebumps even after hearing it multiple times. I remember being in an epic fight in the Grymforge area with my boy Astarion and this came up in the background. 🤤 Such a cool gaming moment. Hope you do more of these! EDIT: How could I forget to mention I'm so glad you broke down the time signature. I always learn something new in your videos! Best breakdowns on YT.
My interpretation of Nine Blades links to Wyll's character, coined the 'Blade of Frontiers'. He makes a pact with a half-devil called Mizora who is from one of the Nine Hells. I suppose if a devil from every one of the hells made a pact with someone like Wyll, you'd indeed have Nine Blades by the end. Really interesting to hear how the music lends itself to focus on this number. Great analysis
Damn... I need this music more often in my fights, the only time I could hear it was when a guy with wings tried to take Isobel away when you just met her.
I feel like Nine Blades makes it pretty obvious where Borislav Slavov came from on his musical career. I can hear a lot of Crysis 2 OST in the middle sections
Good afternoon, if you like Borislav's music so much, I can recommend you a composer who wrote music for previous games of these developers. His name is Kirill Pokrovsky, he is a genius and unfortunately left us, almost immediately after the release of Divinity Original sin. To understand what I'm talking about, please do a review of "Memories of the Future" by him, it's the ost of the same Divinity Original sin. You'll like it, I promise
I wonder if you're familiar with the work of Paul Anthony Romero. I'd really like to watch an analysis on some of his work with the Heroes of Might & Magic game series
@@DrumRollTonyReacts He's a terrific composer and an amazing human being, I hope you will enjoy the experience and his work as much as we, HoMM fans do :D
His soundtrack for Heroes of Might & Magic 5 is literally my main memory from childhood. Me and dad played this game all the time and listened to the music together. Masterpiece!
Many videogames music are soooo good, like final fantasy, god of war, etc. I saw in your lists you haven't listened black clover's openings? Maybe was good to listen, specially Black Catcher, I absolutely love that song!
Great vid, I think you’d really like “Malevolent Shrine” from the new Jujutsu Kaisen season ost, honestly there’s a number of tracks that are bangers. Yoshimasa Terui is an absolute maestro.
I'm not sure why it's nine blades. You could have had up to nine companions in your party at launch (two were mutually exclusive but they've changed it so now you can have all ten at once)
So I take it that you never did manage to get into playing BG3 over the December break? xD Some of these songs have an abrupt ending because they're fight songs, and so they play on a loop until the fight is over.
Hello I'm a new sub to your channel, I've been loving all your reactions and insights, I would love if you could react to Father Gascoigne's theme from Bloodborne
As great as the tracks in BG3 are I believe that they are not as good as in Divinity: Original Sin 2. They are by the same composer so you could have a look at them as well.

Haaa that's too good
why not eighteen strikes? legit question xd
@@gersonbruno8463 If the damage die was 1d8+2 and you rolled a 7, it would fit. 😅

(7×2)+2=16

I love Nine Blades so much, an amazing display of a hero's journey playing out in a song.

You're thinking of Sixteen Strikes actually.
@@TabaBoyOwns Ah you may be right!
Tho i'm not 100% sure hm...
@@TabaBoyOwns
You both are right , if you land a big crit or the battle was turned to your favor, the music shifts to 16 strikes .
I do so much love how the female voice at 15:40 takes over the position the solo trumpet/coronet/oboe(?) had at 6:13 .

Also Thanks for breaking it up from a Directors perspective!
Thank You 😊!
1:49 - There is definitely lightning involved in one of the more memorable battles where this music takes place.
Fun fact, when the song nine blades plays there are 9 allies fighting (your party of 4, another adventuring party of 3, and 2 from inside a grove)
Holy shit! Thank you, sir! I think you dropped this 👑
With almost 500 hours in this game I feel confident in saying this is my favorite piece from the soundtrack.
A Threat from Nether Years - to me it was the most astounding track from Baldur's Gate 3. I'd love to hear your analysis of it.
I had no idea why it was named Nine Blades... so cool that it's because of the rhythm!
Great analysis as always! One of my favourite BG3 tracks for sure, had a feeling you might like it too with the percussion focus for much of the track
6:22 This perfectly mirrors my feelings when listening to this masterpiece. ❤
I have long since waited for this 🙏
Glad you loved this theme, its one of my favorites from the whole soundtrack, cant get enough of this !

You absolutley have to do "legacy of Bhaal" or the Ketheric thorm theme, unforutnaly I don't think that one is offical but it's a work of pure art.

Old time battles 1 and 2 offer even more fun rhythms and time signatures-would love to see those next

All of the music in this game was great, but this was one of my favorite pieces.
I love baldurs gate 3 music. Borislav slavov is a musical genious
Never listened to the OST with my Shure SE525, only over 2.1 on the PC, now I get it why the OST is soooo good...
😁😁
Strongely recommend Old Time Battles pt 1 and pt 2
"OPEN THE BLOODY GATE"
Damn... I need this music more often in my fights, the only time I could hear it was when a guy with wings tried to take Isobel away when you just met her.
It also plays in the first goblin fight. I've noticed it in other places as well.
One of my favourites from bg3
I didnt listen to final fantasy XVI soundtrack , but God Baldurs Gate 3 deserved that award in The game awards in my opinion .
Thats so cool you tell us it is 9 notes!👍🏻
Please do Cunning Cruel Crits! This will sound unbelievable, but it it definitely the best song in the entire soundtrack (tempo and layering wise)!
You’ve gotta check out Legacy Of Bhaal. Probably the best track in the game!
