I’m glad I came back to this list. I just finished playing Ape Escape on PS4, and aside from the Voice Acting (I can overlook it at times) I always loved this entry next to 3.
Nice top 10, I actually don't dislike any of levels from AE1 and I find the games progression to be the best out of the trilogy which is one of the reasons why it's my favorite. As for stand out levels to me they're specters factory, crumbling castle, coral cave, dexter's island, cryptic relics and sushi temple. I hope AE gets the remake it deserves so we can see all the games levels in beautiful HD.
My favorite levels tend to be the ones with the best music. My absolute favorite is Crumbling Castle, I love the medieval theme and especially the music being my favorite in the game. The others are in progression order; Molten Lava for the same reasons as you; Dexter's Island as per your reasons again plus the music; Snowy Mammoth for the mammoth (I grew up during Ice Age movies); and lastly Specter Land exclusively for the haunted house portion, though the whole level is pretty good and big
Awww, Cryptic Ruins is also my favourite level! It’s just so beautiful and soundtrack is awesome! As a child I only wanted to play this level, Specter Land and Frosty Retreat XD
One of my favorite levels is Specter Land too, but it's mostly for the haunted house section; the amount of apes is nice too minus a couple of them. Maybe it's nostalgia fear but the music and atmosphere of the place is pretty freaky. The roller coaster I used to loathe us actually kind of neat. I what there was more to it. I like the girlish flying orbs with faces (kind of had a slight child crush for them, maybe cause they remind me of hex maniacs and that laugh they make)
