HP really made their older printers well. It’s common still seeing them work in modern office environments.

This doesn't surprise me at all. These printers are absolute tanks, and have been known to go well over 100,000 pages without a problem. We had one at work that had over 300,000 pages on it. The button that lights up in green, you can press, and it will print out a test sheet. If you hold it, it might print a data sheet that will show the page count. I don't remember exactly how it works, or if you have to wait for certain flashes of the light to get a particular page, but it's easily searchable, or you can just play around with it.

It did print out a test page of some kind when I pressed the button off-video, I don't remember what data it has on it. Definitely would be interested to see what the page count is on this machine. Perhaps I'll print out the instruction manual for it.

@@JordanU I might have a paper tray for a 1300, the model past this one that came out a year or two later, available. Not sure if it fits, but I'd imagine it would, as the size and shape of the printer was identical; the 1300 was slightly faster.
It has parallel and USB connectivity. It also has the ability to use both ports at the same time, almost like an automatic switchbox, so it can be hooked parallel to one computer and USB on another and it will take jobs from either port. However, and I'm basing this strictly on memory, I think there is an adapter module that needs to be plugged in for parallel, which was included with the printer when new, that breaks out the connector to a standard Centronics connector. I know the 1300 has that, I do not remember if the 1200 did. I think it can "stack" jobs, if hooked to 2 computers, first job sent is the port it switches to and will complete all of those jobs first, then take jobs from the other port, provided the computer doesn't time out the print job due to no communication. No Ethernet, if you wanted that you had to get a JetDirect card for it.

@@jaykay18 I was able to get the information page to print. The machine is still young, it only has about 20,000 pages through it. If the 1300's tray fits I would be interested in it, this is definitely a machine I will be setting up somewhere.

My old elementary/middle school had those printers. A combination of 1000 and 1200 series. Each classroom/teacher would have one. If there were student workstations in the room, they would network share the printer off of the teacher's computer. A rather insecure method today!

Same! Along side the 1100, 1220 (very rare one) & 1300 as well, but the rest I can’t remember anymore.

Only the bottom paper tray part got wet, if the toner and the fuser and such did the results would've likely been worse. Plug that into the server and you got yourself a nice free network printer.

If I can clear enough space to do so, I think I will connect it USB to the computer in the studio and use it in there.

Ah yes, classic HP. Back when HP made quality products. This would put a new one to shame in terms of durability.

I'm picking one of these up for free from FB Marketplace tomorrow. They say it's fully functioning. Even if the toner isn't good, the toner is very inexpensive, $22 online. I'd prefer to have a good hard-wired printer since wireless printers don't work half the time. I end up having to have two printers in case one doesn't work. So having a hard-wired USB one should theoretically always work!

    • @JordanU

This unit should be vastly more reliable than any wireless nonsense of more recent make!

@@JordanU I just picked it up - tested it on their front porch and it printed out a test page perfectly, just like yours did! I knocked on their door and gave them $10 as a "random act of kindness". I haven't hooked it up yet, hoping it will work with my main computer which is Windows 11...

@@tall_dude1233 I'm not sure how a newer version of Windows will play with it, I find anything after 8.1 doesn't fare too well with printers more than a few years old.

@@JordanU Fortunately it was a "plug and play" install with Windows 11. I literally just plugged it in and it worked. I did however have to set it as default otherwise Windows would want to print from my wireless laser printer...
