I truly, truly get your point. But I honestly would hate it if a privileged white woman like Taylor spoke up about OUR plights. I like that she stays in her lane. I have no doubt that she personally and in her own time supports POC and trans women, but does she really have the right to publicly be a champion for OUR rights? No, I don’t think so.
That said, I also don’t want to speak for you. I understand that your needs as an Asian American is different from mine. I’ve met people who agree with me that privileged white people should sit the hell down, but I’ve also encountered people of color who want white people to speak out. We all respond to these things differently. Maybe Taylor even has people in her life who tell her that they’re more comfortable if she sits this one out, and she’s just being respectful of that.

While Sadie and Dylan’s age gap is uncomfortable I think Taylor’s casting choice was needed to legitimately showcase how problematic this relationship was. We have to remember that both actors are just that, *actors*, and this isn’t a short film condoning or glorifying large age gap relationships. I think Sadie and Dylan did a great job in these roles, you could feel their difference in age and maturity immediately.

the “fuck the patriarchy” line in the song has nothing to do with taylor’s views on feminism. it’s more so that jake let taylor drive the car and said “fuck the patriarchy” as he was throwing her the car keys because he presented himself as a feminist, while at the same time treating taylor poorly.

Instead I saw a lot of people actually talking about their relationship as "dreamy" without realizing how wrong it was just because she didn't look that young (even though she was).
This "uncomfortable" feeling was what we didn't felt back in 2009 but didn't, showing how we failed her. Why we feel uncomfortable with Sadie but didn't feel that way with Tay? All those questions are for us as expectators to question ourselves.

a thing about the angles: this is a slight low angle and it's commonly used in scenes involving power dynamics or where one character has an advantage over another. i think it's a subtle way of visually showing how Taylor put him on a metaphorical pedestal, not to mention that he's taller and older than her so she's always looking up at him in some way. sincerely, a film student/nerd.

She explains this in Miss Americana (the documentary) but as a country artist (when she was starting out), she was taught to not speak out on her politics and to just stick to music. Now that she's older, more established, and more mature, she's confident in speaking out about issues such as racism, misogyny, homophobia, etc. The problem is that when she speaks out, no one pays as much attention to her because she stayed quiet for so long. But she's a huuuuge advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and women in general. I will say tho, obviously I'm not her so idk if it's true or not, but maybe she doesn't speak out on behalf of WOC and Trans women because she feels it's not her place? Personally, I think the extra minute of her echoing "i was there, i was there, you remember it all too well" while recalling a few details of some memories like, "wind in my hair, down the stairs, sacred prayer" was necessary, all because I think even before Red (Taylor's Version) was ever gonna become a thing, a lot of Taylor's fans were still talking shit about Jake and talking about the scarf and how he didn't show up for her 21st birthday party, whatnot. So, the 1 minute echo was like this ever-haunting memory of that 3-month relationship for him. Of her being like, "i was there, and you *do* remember it all too well."
It's as though everywhere he goes, there's always that reminder of that infamous time with her. That's just my interpretation of it though.

Like in "You need to calm down" she got a lot of backlash for being a poser even though she's always been LGBTQ+ friendly and has given to charities for years. I think she's just sticking in her lane while being vocal enough for people to know that she supports what she supports. If she wrote a song about something she can't personally relate to it can come across fake and misinformed which would do more harm than good. So I think she's doing alright. i think it really fits how taylor casted dylan & sadie, because obviously she could've cast other people with a smaller age gap but that it literally the point she wanted to make. bc it is not supposed to be a romantic lovingly music video where people start to ship dylan & sadies characters, but to point out how weird it is, & also have them make out to make viewers uncomfortable really helps with that..
i do have to say that taylor does now speak out a lot about lgbtqi, gender and racial problems in our society.. like she mentioned in miss americana she was always advised (or more likely shut up) about speaking her truth and what she really believes. her talking about feminism doesnt only apply to her, just now in the short film it does, because it is about her experience in that situation a couple years ago..
also the line about the keychain & 'f*ck the patriarchy' wasnt supposed to be her talking about what feminism is but what jake at that time saw as a good comment about how he helped her and stood up for feminism.
the 'spider man' kiss was also more a hint at jake being in a relationship with kirsten dunst around the same time he was/ ended it with taylor.. & not really a hit at him playing mysterio years later..
(edit: i think someone already commented about kirsten, so yes i agree with them hahah)

here to give my 2 cents (have been a taylor swift fan since 2009 and have been watching trin for a while too)
    1. about the whole activism thing - she does do a lot of things but the media doesn't choose to cover it because it doesn't suit their narrative of taylor being this white unbothered artist. she does have a lot of privelege and she had said the same many times. im from India and honestly if she ever spoke about the women's issues over here I'd feel a bit resentful because it not from experience but based on what she's read in media. when someone hasn't experienced it, I'd rather they not talk about it.
    2. the whole age difference thing between the actors - guys, they're two CONSENTING adult actors. im sure taylor would've made the space very comfortable for Sadie to object to anything she isn't comfortable with.

Jake Gyllenhaal dated Kristen Dunst who we all know played Mary Jane. There's an old interview of Jake saying that he'd only fallen in love once, he was talking about Kristen. I think young Taylor was referring to herself when she said that, but now, old Taylor looks back at it and knows it wasn't her, so maybe it could be a nod to that, or maybe I'm just overthinking it. But also, in the spiderman movies, Mary Jane is the one who initiates the kiss with first Peter, and then another love interest as if trying to have the same magic, the same spark but after it happens, she realizes it's not the same."

The activism thing. Tbh, as much as I love Taylor Swift, I wouldn't want her to write songs about the LGBTQIA+ or about POCs because she had no idea what we been through. And instead of actually fighting for our rights, the media will put it out as Taylor, a famous white singer, is speaking up for these people. Which definitely plays into white heroism. I would like it better if she supports them and give them the platform instead of being the representative of fighting for our rights. I don't if you understand what I mean 😅.
Another thing, what do you mean she does not speak of it now, did you even hear her song, The Man? Also, just because you are not speaking up for it in the past, does not mean you don't support it. I hate that mindset. Its like you are asking for people to never change their beliefs and the things they support in. Does that mean that when my parents don't like gays before but now they accept it because they had been educated, you will not believe them?? Even if they actually change and fully support it now? There are things you regret supporting before, you change so why can't other people change too? Wow.
I suggest that Trin should watch Miss Americana to further understand Taylor Swift.
Another thing, I find it weird that everyone is so disgusted by the casting when it is the point of the film. Also, don't be a hypocrite, there are so many series and movies that have a huge age gap that nobody criticize. What the heck is with that???? Double standards? Just because Taylor is highlighting how disgusting it is then it's not alright to do the casting, but if it's used in other films it's cute and quirky? Wow. Just wow. Edit: I think this comes down to a misunderstanding of why Age gaps are problematic in the first place… She said it herself, shes capable of wanting to kiss Dylan. Doesn’t mean they want to be in a relationship that would have problematic power dynamics due to different phases in life. I don’t know how Sadie is being treated like a child when she’s incredibly intelligent, professional, and most importantly of age. It’s not even like she’s freshly 18 and they’re finally getting the “ok”. They’re both actors doing their job while maintaining boundaries, they’re capable of making those decisions for themselves. The importance is whether or not Sadie or Dylan were given the SPACE and RESPECT to address those boundaries. I don’t want to say it’s infantilization but I don’t know another word for it. If we can’t even portray age gaps in media when 2 huge actors are given the room to collaborate with another artist (largely on their own in terms of what was portrayed) what the hell is that precedent for everything else…?

I'm glad Taylor shares her own experiences with the patriarchy with great art like this, because it could help some women feel seen and understood. Not all women, but some. I just think her personal pain when it comes to the patriarchy should be seen as just as valid as the experiences of women of color and trans women and queer women, and I really don't understand the mentality of needing to validate everyone's experiences in your art. Your art should be personal. It should reflect your own life and what you personally feel strongly about. If Taylor feels strongly about fucking the patriarchy because of her own personal experiences as a white straight cis woman who dated a man 10 years older than her, why she should then have to stand up for all women. those women can stand up for themselves. Never understood the need for celebrities to address social issues in America. They’re so far removed from any of our realities that speaking on it on our behalf or calling it out without a strong, nuanced understanding of a lived experience doesn’t really make sense to me. In no way does it encapsulate the magnitude of any of the issues they’re ~forced to address nor can it affect the change they want to on a federal level. It’s good to be educated, to think of others, to recognize and learn from other people’s truths etc., but some just seem awful quick to jump down their throat for the slightest misstep; and at the same time, so unwilling to do anything but be hostile towards them even if they’re genuinely trying to do better. Life exists outside social media, but people here seem to think that their silence on specific issues is a reflection of who they are and what they do when it’s not. It's unfair for her to speak on things she's never experienced.

I feel like the age gap, even if she didn't make it exact, needed to be present to accurately portray what the relationship was. It wasn't two grown adults who are equal in a toxic relationship, there was this overarching and ever present power imbalance. Without the age gap that point can be missed.

Talking about lack of representation and support while Swift and Blake casted the most inclusive extras for their most reagent m/v. Did not make a big deal off of it, if you want to notice it is there if you don’t then that’s on you. And just like that she’s done much more on different subjects but it’s all very quietly done, no headlines written about it bcs it’s better to write about how many exes she has, am I right?

ik i'm pretty late commenting but Trin is the first person i've seen actually address Taylor's feminism and how it could be better and i really appreciated it. Remember it's okay to hold people accountable for things and still love them!

i hate when viewers are like “ew this made me so uncomfortable” like that’s the whole point…it’s supposed to make you feel uncomfortable about their whole relationship, a newly turned adult and a man year away from 30

    • @auroragonzales2955
      @auroragonzales2955 2 года назад +1

Yeah but actors ALWAYS play characters that aren’t their actual age so she could’ve picked someone older

@@auroragonzales2955 what difference does that make to you? sadie did a wonderful job and was obviously comfortable doing it. i don’t get why y’all are so mad about it, it’s not a real relationship between sadie and dylan. it’s acting and they’re both consenting adults.

I disagree with some of your points in this video but some people are being really nasty in the comments and it's a really bad look for swifties honestly.
Trin is allowed to state her opinions there's literally no need to be so mean about it.

Girl what are you talking about?
Taylor most of the time just silently gives a lot of money to important charities and people that are in need of it instead of just talking about their problems which is really classy imo and she is a big advocate for LGBT community and she once directly even called out Trump on twitter during BLM protesters were going on. She is doing more than most celebratitis do.

TRIN IF UR READING THIS I LOVE YOU OMG stay strong against these comments & tweets. i personally don't see many people being OK with the age gap in terms of shipping dylan and sadie or romanticizing the age gap (though i'm sure there are a few people and that's gross and weird and awful). like many have said the age gap comes off as intentional and needed to reflect the real situation between taylor and jake to make a point. idk there was a lot of smooochinnggg and it gets uncomfortable..as it should be. the point is to say "this isn't ok" and to be uncomfortable, which u were like ?? so i completely respect and understand ur take !!
