Jerry showing his inspirational side through his music was always so heart warming. Whenever he performed songs like Who Was John, Gomorrah among others I feel he related a message whether he realized it or not. It was reported when Jerry passed that he had a smile on his face I want to believe that smile was because he saw the eyes of his Maker!!!♥️
There was only 1 Jerry Garcia, God Bless, and to those who were fortunate to witness in person, the Soul of Humanity, the artistry and creativity he put into his life’s work is one of the few things I will always cherish and take away with me as I go to eternal rest
This performance occurred about a month or so after a teenaged version of me saw the Grateful Dead for the first time ..on my birthday. That ebullient guitar, that playful, searching sound, left an indelible impression. Plus: BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!
I love when people buy into the title of that gd alpine valley dvd release 1989 downhill from here. BS Jerry could still pull magic out of that guitar and his voice to cast the spell in 93. Beautiful Maker thanks for the upload.
I can see the mountains covered with the huge trees billowing down to the sea....and a little boy......... and his Daddy suddenly gone away.......May they play togather now.
@Jeff R. Yeah, I recall the optimism of 93 as well, but it just didn't last. You can see versions of this same tune from Fall '93 that already are showing a decline- much less focused guitar playing, although still compelling in a way. By '94, it is indeed all downhill. Such is life. Focus on the good parts.
I'll never forget the first time I heard him play this. I had never heard the song before and I did not expected at all. It was at Richmond the same year but in november. I remember every second of it like it is burned into my brain. I couldn't get over it and I drove home, picked up my guitar and figured out as much as I could remember I was so fascinated. It was a long time until I could hear the song again. Wow what a moment that was! I wish I could get a really crisp recording of that fall 93 Cherry Band tour, all those shows, soundboard recordings locked away in a vault that will never see the light of day. That's sad
My Jerry By Poplawski Sweet Jesus those solo runs! A Thunder at the Temple! The sound of Trumpets! The sound of Lightning! A melting splendor peeling back the very Gates of Eden. Head down, silver mane like a halo a-blaze and a-blowing, unmoving and unbowing, standing like a pillar and….. ……just. fucking. shredding. He’d speak thru his strings in intricate holographic paragraphs hieroglyphs of sound and melodic phrasings you know? Spinning tales of epic hero’s journeys, far away, lost and then found we’d go. Space, heaven and time would all stop and gather breathlessly by, for another chance to witness the storm of his melody’s unfolding, inside the deep waters of the labyrinthian mazes of mind. Whole worlds would build, bend and fall in the palms of his hands. A blazing angels tongue in Holy Syllables singing sand to glass and glass to sand. Until shipwrecked once again! Captured by the sirens song and dashed upon a wind. Sunk without hope drowned and stranded upon the forlorn rocks of your darkness’s desolation, and be across that boneyard spread. And in your dying becoming, born as infant anew. Swiftly now returning, brightly and burning, unto the shoreline of our Lights redemptions and carried safely Home again And oh you’d jump! and gasp! and laugh! and sing! And hug your friends all a-weepin’ at the beauty it contained. His notes ascended and enveloped you in their neon ribbons of joy. Calling upon the child of your heart to awaken as a teardrop rolls from your eye Wild and free in the curious fields of his inquiring. Playfully teasing Eternity’s multitudes, in a game of cosmic hide-n-seek. All for another chance to follow him beyond the grand beyond of possibilities possibility. All the beauty and grace you can stand. To hear him laugh and call back ‘Hey man, try and catch me if you can!’ …………………….
Oh, oh deep water Black and cold like the night I stand with arms wide open I've run a twisted line I'm a stranger in the eyes of the Maker I could not see for the fog in my eyes I could not feel for the fear in my life And from across the great divide In the distance I saw a light Jean Baptiste's walking to me with the Maker My body is bent and broken By long and dangerous sleep I can't work the fields of Abraham And turn my head away I'm not a stranger in the hands of the Maker Brother John, have you seen the homeless daughters Standing there with broken wings I have seen the flaming swords There over east of Eden Burning in the eyes of the Maker Burning in the eyes of the Maker Burning in the eyes of the Maker
I loved hearing this one at the Jerry shows. Daniel Lanois has written some great songs but Jerry always makes great work of whatever he touches and always makes them glow.
John Khan, Melvin Seals, David Kemper, Jaclyn LaBranch, Gloria Jones, and Jerry Garcia came together to give us this great stuff, and give so many people amazing memories. Nice!
I heard this Daniel Lanois song on Emmylou Harris Wrecking Ball and it was absolutely wonderful and I love this one too!! Nice one Jerry! Miss you! Still dancing!🎵💃🌹🕺🎵
Such a beautiful sentiment here. There's no one else who puts such raw and palpable emotion into every note. Not his song of course, but boy, does he make it autobiographical
In the distance, i can still the see the light. the big fat man, gray hair blowing in the breeze as that feeling of elation washes over my soul and the tingling up my spine as I live exclusively in that moment. Forever.....
There are several very good covers of this tune including the original, by Daniel Lanois, but I have to say this is my favorite. Jerry's guitar here is just unreal, and the vocals are haunting.
Daniel Lanois Oh, oh deep water, black and cold like the night I stand with arms wide open, I've run a twisted line I'm a stranger in the eyes of the Maker I could not see for the fog in my eyes I could not feel for the fear in my life And from across the great divide, In the distance I saw a light Jean Baptiste's walking to me with the Maker My body is bent and broken by long and dangerous sleep I can't work the fields of Abraham and turn my head away I'm not a stranger in the hands of the Maker Brother John, have you seen the homeless daughters Standing there with broken wings I have seen the flaming swords There over east of Eden Burning in the eyes of the Maker Burning in the eyes of the Maker Burning in the eyes of the Maker Oh, river rise from your sleep
I wasn't very familiar with this tune, but OMG is it beautiful, and the melodies pouring out of Jerry's guitar are nothing short of inspiring….WOW. It's also been stuck in my head for the last 3 days, and I'm just fine with that.
Look up Daniel Lanois, he's the maker of The Maker. This version is pretty true to the original. If you hear the original you should be taken by Daniel Lanois.

I wonder if that was one of the things that endeared him to so many? His humanity , his stumbling , his faults, never pretended to be anything other than what he was . One of the most lived human beings ever, no doubt .
The closest I have come to finding a better solo is Peggy-O 12/31/83, for which there is a video, and Deep Elem Blues from Almost Acoustic (Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band), for which I have been unable to find a video.
I am the way, the truth and the life....no one comes to the Father but by me......and .......the Word became flesh and dwelt among us....the only one of the Father, full of grace and truth.....All things were made by Him..............an answer to "So many roads".......mercy and love....me thinks Jerry is there.
Joseph Noviello there comes a redeemer and he slowly too fades away......there follows a wagon behind him that's loaded with clay....the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom...
At the very top of my most favorite solos of all time.
Rest in peace, Jerry. We'll always be grateful that you shared your gifts.
Every time I listen to this particular version I get blown away like it’s the first time I’m hearing it
53 years listening, IMO, the loveliest solo he's ever done, absolutely brilliant!!
Greatest sense of melody of any guitarist in my opinion. Thousands could play faster but none more beautifully
Yes. Sacred. Holy.
