      I go through my Sephora app Loves list regularly, and delete things I won't get at all. I try to delete duplicates of the same product from different brands too.

      I read this the other day: If I see an item I like, I think of a price I would be willing to pay for it. If the actual price turns out to be more, I won't get it.

      Ok I know that I am 2 years late watching this video and I must say that I wish I had. I could have used all this advice this past year. I kinda went crazy purchasing makeup. Also I had been getting all the boxycharm subscriptions and ipsy for over a year. I have boxes of makeup and skincare that is going to take me years to use up. I canceled all my subscription boxes. That way I'm not accumulating products I'm never going to use

    Tip: do not buy and hoard 20 foundations, highlighters, bronzer, concealers, setting powder. Use up what u have and buy when your holy grail when you have empties. No one needs 20 foundations, etc. You have one face.

      Marghie Payumo I agree I do that too. I won’t let myself by certain new products til I use up the same kind of product I already have like for instance if it’s a new setting powder.

    FWIW: former Ulta employee. Many shoppers redeem their points as soon as they have any. However, if you do routinely by there, save your points and redeem at the 2,000 ot mark. If you redeem 1950 pts, you get 85$ worth if credit. If you redeem 2,000, you get $125 worth of credit. Combine with a 20% coupon that includes your entire purchase and prestige brands, and you'll save a good deal.

    I have one small tip myself: to stop using the word 'collection' when referring to our (well, mine for sure....) already huge stack of products. I've started saying to myself 'This is one more item that would most likely go unutilized' instead of 'I'll add it to my collection' - and this has stopped me from many error buys.

    when I first started watching youtube I was overwhelmed... I feel like I just bought everything that they used...I bought it all, I ended up with almost every new release. I found that some brands just did not do it for me and some worked better. I will always be a MAC lipstick girl, so I stick to what I know in that category. I am currently enjoying USING UP many of my products and keeping an edited collection of products that I love.

    A good bench mark for a beauty budget is 5% of what you make. Read that this is a healthy amount for clothes and the like. So, the 5% is inclusive of clothes, shoes, makeup. If one has spent that 5% on a palette, then no new shoes. 😘

    Thank you Jena love this series, I came across a video in which the girl was doing a no buy, she suggested to try and replicate new releases with palettes you already own, if you can get a similar look using several of your existing palettes then you don't need the new one. I'm going to try depotting eyeshadows and placing them in Z palettes and just move them around depending on the palettes I want to dupe, this way I can get the most use of each individual color.

    One hard lesson I’ve learned is not to buy color products from a digital image if at all possible. Blush shades online seem often to bear little relationship to the color that shows up in the mail. I won’t even get into foundations. I’ve wasted SO much money this way (and I’m not a good returner either, no credit to me).

      Angela Pennington I was doing so well - unsubscribed from everything and made it 2.5 months without buying anything. Sounds lame, but the first couple weeks were very hard. I still browse and daydream, but I’m trying to only get things I need or will use. I didn’t need another eyeshadow palette but got sucked into the Lorac palette - not the best palette I’ve ever seen but it seems very versatile for every day (realistic for me over the Too Faced Chocolate Gold). The videos I watched from people I trust gave it good reviews, but with formulas changing how do I know what they think now?

    When shopping sales, to assess how good of a deal you are getting, instead of looking at how much you are being discounted (i.e. 20%), look at how much you are paying (i.e. 80%). 20% off sounds a lot better than 80% on!

    Outstanding video, Jena, thanks so much! I can't speak for others but for me I've found I'm much more controlled shopping online than in the store. In store the girls all tell you how wonderful this or that product is and how it would look good with your eyes, etc. and you cave to the pressure. Online, even though I put things I like in the *basket* so I can check out RUclips reviews, etc. I have no problem taking them right out of the basket! The struggle is real....!!

    i really like this series & the timing you’re posting them. i feel like i’ve seen a lot of videos where people are trying to justify or figure out if something on sale is worth trying/getting by having people convince them to do it, and i wish they’d just follow their gut and say no or think about why they need it critically. i mean i love when the sales come up, but so far i’ve gotten two items from the ulta sale - abh brow wiz because i fly through those, and the mac painterly pot because i do use concealer on my eyelids & really wanted to try it out for a long time. all i have left is eyeliners which i literally have one left & a favorite is on sale so i’m definitely picking those up, and then a primer i’ve wanted to try for well over a year. but everything else is not needed, there’s even products i love on sale, but i already have some of them & they’ll take forever to get through. i don’t need more just because i like that product.

    • @hannahjane8275
      @hannahjane8275 5 лет назад +2

      also thank you for mentioning the sephora samples. i always forget to ask because in all the years i’ve shopped at sephora i’ve never been offered a sample of anything i’m looking at.

    • @JenaFroese
      @JenaFroese  5 лет назад +1

      I know!! They need to be more vocal about the fact that they can give you samples. I think overall it would help, even though making a sale might be the goal, but if the product gets returned it doesn’t help their store goals for sales anyway!
      I’m so glad you like this series Hannah! 💕 I love having a good balance of items I’m using up, and items I’m introducing into my collection. The industry now is SO crazy with releases it could bankrupt us all! 😬

    • @hannahjane8275
      @hannahjane8275 5 лет назад

      Jena Froese it definitely would! i’ve worked retail most of my life so far, and one of them was for a cosmetics business. we gave samples all the time & it worked! i would only feel irked if someone had more than 3 & we noticed particular customers who over took advantage of it, but they were seriously so rare! we only had maybe a handful of these customers & we were an extremely busy store, so giving a couple samples is not detrimental at all & it most definitely helps with returns. you have less of them & you lose/waste less product because you can’t resell cosmetics. especially items like concealer & foundation i think they should be very open about samples because stuff gets returned for being the wrong shade a lot.
      oh my goodness, so many releases, i’m so glad i’m a more casual makeup user because when i watch all the release news it’s so overwhelming & when i think about all the money enthusiasts must spend i hurt for them a little, lol.

    I have an issue where I keep buying things because I think I’ll like them but then don’t. I cannot seem to find a foundation I like and when I finally do, it gets discontinued. So I keep buying and buying and buying hoping to find that one elusive foundation/powder/eyeshadow palette/mascara that I like so I can get rid of all the crap I already have. That is one of the most frustrating parts of makeup for me. Plus the constant bombardment of new things they make you feel you need when you don’t.
    Also, sales used to actually be sales, 20% off isn’t really a sale, it’s a slight discount. A sale is 50% off or more. You have ONE face people, it’s hard to forget that with all the pretty colors and packaging, etc. I used to buy based on pretty colors but then I realized, I don’t use those colors. Now I know what colors and finishes work for my face and that is very helpful in itself.

    Samples, samples, samples... that has helped me soo much. Every time I go to Sephora now I get a bunch of samples and not just for foundation though that's what I get the most, you can get sample of anything they can get in the container, foundations, concealers, moisturizer, eye cream, primers AND perfume! I was really wanting those Jo Malone weed perfumes and I got samples of them and I am so glad I did because while the packaging is gorgeous- I didn't end up liking any of the scents. I almost got sidetracked by Sephora this morning, I noticed they have the new Tatcha dewy moisturizer in a free trial size with $35 purchase. Firstly, Tatcha is one of my loyalty brands, LOVE their stuff and I use it every day. Secondly, I didn't need a thing. Nothing. Went through my loves list and tried to put together a staples order just for the lousy sample until I asked myself "what am I doing?" I have so much Tatcha moisturizer in action (and in backup... I'm not buying backups anymore, I put a stop to that, even when on sale) that by the time I get through it all and I'm ready for a new moisturizer Tatcha will offer travel sized tubs of the dewy (which they currently don't have) on their site--or have something even newer and better. Crisis narrowly avoided!

    I use sales to buy almost all of my high-end palettes. I never pay full price for high-end makeup unless I have gotten Sephora gift cards. Then there's TJ Maxx. Which you have to be careful with because you will over spend seeing so many high end items for discounted prices. There are so many RUclips videos with people scavenging numerous TJ Maxx and Marshall's stores spending unnecessarily.

    • @JenaFroese
      @JenaFroese  5 лет назад

      I rarely find anything at TJMaxx! Some stores must be better than others. Either that or the things I do see that I’m slightly interested in have been opened and messed around with 😬 but using sales for high end makeup is great!

    Girl I have realized I have a make up addiction. It’s like I almost can’t help myself I just impulsively buy beautiful things I’m attracted to even if I have other options at home in the same category. Even worse I have way to much makeup and it’s just to hard for me to declutter it because what if I fall in like with it again? And I’m terrible about buying of the word sale is involved. I think I need to find a way to stop buying for a moment. Thanks for you’re tips. If you think of anything that might help me please let me know thanks girl. 💕💕

    For Ulta 21 days of beauty I stocked up on the Anastasia Brow Wiz, I plan on purchasing the Primerizer this Wednesday, and the Lorac pro 3 on the final day because I love neutral palettes and will get a lot of use out of it. But the brow wiz I know I will repurchase and the Primerizer I only buy the travel size because it’s cheaper to buy two for 15 than the full size for 42 which makes no sense to me that two travel sizes are cheaper for the same amount in a full size. 21 dollars is much more reasonable. I also have over 700 points saved at Sephora ❤️

    Another thing that's tempting is color story. We look at something new and think WOW that's unique! Come to find, we have that color story in a much cheaper palette! I bought a pricey sunset palette. Come to find I had the same story in my BH neutrals! Look at the Maybelline bar palette. It's the same story as wnw rose in the air! Wnw is cheaper! 😍

And I rarely purchase them because I keep an eye out for rewards because chances are one of those will there very few months and if not there might be a mascara that I was interested in buying but now I can try it without spending money.

I had thought about getting an eyeshadow palette from a brand I've never tried as a splurge, but I'm going to stick with a brand I already know I love since I won't be able to return it.

    I liked a lot of your tips. Especially, the one about utilizing samples! I never think to get samples when I'm shopping but really it is the best way to test foundations, concealers,and SPF. I have sensitive skin and have to be careful with base products. I do have one thing I want to say about VIP Rouge. Saving your points to get cash is great! However, I have never spent enough money per calendar year to make it past the insider status nor do I want to increase my spending to make it to the next tier. I think a lot of people get sucked into the trap of trying to obtain these top tier statuses.In reality the amount of money you are required to spend to get these perks is substantial and the perks are not worth it! Spending $1300 to get $100 is crazy to me. Especially when my average spending is between $200-400 per year.The points system is set up to trick you into buying more... "oh if you spend this you get to participate in the 20% off sale or get early access". So people buy more than they would have to get those perks. The amount of money they would have saved at the sales is minimal to what they were required to spend just to get the perk. Perhaps the goal should be to maintain our insider status in a calendar year?

    another tip i have is wjat i call the swatch sheets so all of my lipsticks and liquid lipsticks and glosses and colored liners abd such i write the vrand and nane and do a small swatch of color and take photos so i have them on my person but also on a sheet so if i need a certain color i go to the nude section and see if i have it or before i buy new i can compare. and for liner makes building looks so easy because i can see whT liners i have and their color payoff without having to swatch each one before picking!!

    Hey Jena. I started to work out what the price of the product is per gram for eyeshadows. I think it would be good to have this as part of reviews. I worked out the ABH Riveria is between $8 to $6.50 per gram ($AUS) depending if you purchase it for $82 or $69.50. You hardly get any product in the new ABH palette. Natasha Denona is around $5 per gram but she put in 2.5grams per pan. However, can you use that much before the shelf life of product expires? if not wasting money. ABH is only 0.74 grams per pan that is way above price per gram of Tarte and Urban decay. Just an idea for future videos.

    I have recently stopped watching channels that only discuss drugstore makeup. . I just have had no luck with drugstore cosmetics. I have found I will buy drugstore products because they are recommended “dupes” but then I have decluttered all of it. I realize I have been wasting money trying to find cheaper makeup. I guess I felt I needed to find something in that drugstore so I would not be a snob. So, I will buy the high end or luxury product and will enjoy it and will no longer search for that “dupe”. I wasted hundreds of dollars last year in the drugstore. Thanks for sharing your tips!

      I like to order dupes online but there are certain brands just like with high end makeup, that speak to me. I never try to buy drugstore makeup from like for example Maybelline if you buy 2 lipsticks you can buy 1 MAC it’s not spending smart for me. Why am I still thinking this way? It’s easy to pile in $40 or $50 from the drugstore in ur cart when you can buy one or maybe 2, good things from high end that will serve you better unless they are from your regular dupe brands you trust. I’m glad Jena shared this info.
