  • What's it like to feel like a foreigner in a country you were born and raised in? Aju was born in Tokyo to a father from the Bahama's and a mother from Japan. She has spent almost all of her life in Japan and speaks native Japanese, but struggles to talk to other Japanese people. Why won't Japan accept mixed-race people?

    No way!!! Is that Aju? One of the kindest Japanese woman I have met during my travels in Japan. I met her last year at Weerasakrack Muay Thai gym in Tokyo, September 2023 during our Muay Thai training session and she acted as a translator for me to a tradesperson working at the gym which then led onto having a really great unforgettable conversation with her before I had to dash to DisneySea. I’m a man and the first thing that came to mind when I heard her say she’s never dated, was she needs to relocate. As beautiful as she is, she’s not benefiting by staying where she’s at. I hope that this girl has the ability to travel the world, so she can move past this stigma she’s stuck in. She’s so forgiving and understanding towards the constant harassment she’s endured, and clearly she’s adapted some good life skills that are influenced of decorum and huge respect towards others.

    • @ItsMe-so4nd
      @ItsMe-so4nd 3 дня назад +6

      The suggestion for her to be able to travel had nothing to do with her being hit on by men. It was for her to be able to go and experience how much bigger the world is than the one she’s stuck in currently. I mean no disrespect towards anyone, but no girl should ever feel ignored like she’s feeling or have to hear these negative condescending ignorant comments she has no control over. It’s unfair that she has to feel like this when clearly she’s so kind towards people and able to smile while out in public. People having to go through such harsh criticism often seem to have a negative effect with interaction skills especially in public.

      They are not "rejecting" her, in this video, they just assume that she comes from outside Japan.
      I'm not saying that racism or doesn't exist in Japan like anywhere else; But, unless it's motivated by hatred, asking where you come from or what your origins are isn't racism, it's curiosity. People do that with me all the time because of my first and last name.
      Is it annoying? Not for me, as people getting interested in me is better than people ignoring me. I also ask others what their origins are, it's a good conversation starter.
      The girl may be very nice, but she is full of tatoos and shey's got the look to squat in front of a combini. She isn't doing her best to get Japanese people spontaneously coming to talk to her.

    Been to japan for the first time last month. I was traveling solo and got a kind of gaijin blues. People would avoid sitting next to me on trains or in a public bath. I've been studying japanese for a while now and can hold my own in basic conversation or interacting with store clerks, but I've experienced people not realizing I was talking in japanese and replying back in broken english. I can only imagine what that has to be like when you are native and lived there your whole life.
    Also, Aju seems like a wonderful person. Don't let it get to you, Aju.

      Tokyo is also a lot less friendly than other places in Japan. Usually the biggest landing city in a country is where the meanest people are ton foreigners (London, Paris, New York City), or to people in general. It’s usually the most fast paced place with grumpy overworked people who feel they pay way too much for things compared to the rest of their country, and they resent the tourists because they believe the tourists are the reason why everything is “tourist prices,” and for crowding their public events and public resources. There are nice people in Tokyo, but you’re also more likely to run into people who just have a bad attitude, even for a polite society like Japan’s.
      Generally, people get a friendlier welcome in places like Kyoto, Osaka, Sapporo, and other major Japanese cities outside of Tokyo. You can visit some of the shrines and check out the fox forest and cat island, go on a sleep capsule overnight train. They’re generally friendlier in settings further away from the main hub of Tokyo. So many travelers have talked about this on youtube, definitely worth taking a look at some of what they have to say on this topic.

    • @kathleencove
      @kathleencove 5 дней назад +7

      Also, as for replying in English, try not to take it too personally. I can definitely understand how that would be frustrating for a Japanese person who was born and raised there, and I really hope that Japan starts to recognize their interracial minorities a little more. However, for most tourists, when they reply in English, they’re not doing this to insult you, they actually believe they are doing you a kindness and a favor. Try to keep in mind that probably a majority of the tourists they see every year don’t speak Japanese at all or only speak very little, but by contrast, Japanese people have been speaking their “broken English” for decades as part of their job serving tourists. They believe they’re giving you good customer service and trying to be respectful. Try not too get too sad or take offense at someone doing something with good intentions, they’re just trying to do their job. When Japanese people first moved to western countries as immigrants, hotels and restaurants and even some trains absolutely refused to serve them at all and would leave signs out saying “no [expletive slur for Asian people]” for business.
      Just a little perspective. It could be a lot worse, and the Japanese people speaking English to you are just trying to meet you halfway and they mean well.

    • @matuiyo2000
      @matuiyo2000 5 дней назад +5

      You also have to understand the upbringing. Japanese laws aren't as open as other countries like the US. It's harder to get citizenship their as a foreigner to the point where if you aren't ethnically Japanese, you have to get things like work visas to even be possibly accepted. Being minority looking can be rough in countries like that. There's even certain parts of Asia that have never seen a black person in general. I remember seeing a video, possibly south korea, where it's so secluded that it said that one person was confused why their skin was so dark as far as suggesting if they took a bath, they would be cleaner.

    This reminds me of an anecdote I heard from an American friend of mine. Husband Austrian, business took them to Japan for ten years. Their two sons were born and raised there, and naturally spoke fluent Japanese. The family returned to Austria, and one evening were watching a puppet show here in Vienna, with an audience of mostly Japanese tourists, including children. My friend's sons were bored and started telling dirty jokes in Japanese. The tourist's children in the audience were amazed and called their parents' attention to the white boys speaking Japanese. And the parents _couldn't hear that they were speaking Japanese._ Only their children noticed.
    Well done. Cheers from rainy Vienna, Scott

They told me that there’s a big difference between the way they’re treated and the way their friends who are half black or half other Asian country. For older Japanese skin color seems to be a major factor for them to look down upon or think of them as not being Japanese. I guess also it’s the fact that they’re boys so they’ll talk back very quickly to anyone who steps out a line with them. I’m not saying there are mixed females that don’t do that but it could also play a major factor in the situation. That and my boys are actually pretty tall.

    My son-in-law and his two brothers could not inherit anything in Japan from their father because their births in Australia were not registered in Japan. Less of an issue was their mixed race. Each of the three brothers look more or less Japanese. My son-in-law looks Japanese whilst one brother looks Eurasian and another looks like he comes from a Mediterranean country. Luckily, there are over 300 ethnicities in Australia and mixed race children are common so, there are very few issues.

    I'm from the England and my wife is Japanese. Our daughter was born and raised in Nagoya but fate would have it she looks completely English, hardly asian looking at all. When I pick her up from school, kids and parents often refer to her as 'Gaikokujin' (foreigner) and I tell them them she was born in the hospital down the road and has lived here all her life. My daughter knows she looks different but doesn't really understand why they say that about her. She gets embarrassed a lot because in reality, after living in Japan for all 6 years of her life, she's way more Japanese than English. But for some reason, if you don't look Japanese, you will always be seen as a foreigner in Japan.

Also people thought they need to talk to her in English when seeing her for the first time so they would tend to avoid her so they don't need to speak in English. Also she is a small minority. If 20% of the people are mixed race, then it would be different experience because people are used to it. She is tall and most Japanese men are short. Even if she is not mixed race, her height doesn't make it easy to find date with Japanese men.

    Kinda the same over here in Canada. I grew up attending a French immersion school from 5 years old to end of high school. I'm fluent in French but when I would go to the French Canadian province of Quebec, I rarely used my French as locals could sense I wasn't from Quebec, so they would respond to me in English. It's part courtesy and part dismissiveness. Having later worked in Mexico, I regret not having stronger Spanish skills. I found over there that it's more assumed you can speak Spanish, even if you look very American.

    Yeah, I resonate. I'm also mixed, born, raised, and living in a pretty homogenous country. Maybe not as homogenous as Japan, but you know, Slavic countries aren't always people's dream destinations.
    I've had a couple of instances where people started speaking to me in English, or looked somewhat nervous before I started speaking our language, but in general that's not really an issue. Either a lot of people know enough English to communicate or are just used to seeing foreigners. The issue is that I know that no matter where I go or what I do, I'll stand out. You can say that I belong to two cultures, but realistically, I don't feel like I belong to either. Not a pleasant feeling, you know? I feel like a stranger in my own home. Maybe not as much anymore (a benefit of globalization), but still, whenever I leave my house I know I'll be stared at. That's the best case scenario, honestly, the worst part is when I hear someone talking about me and I know it's better to just ignore them and not respond.
    Sucks, but what can you do.

Kick Boxing and boxing have a nature to it that makes people not always feel like they want to take a chance and trigger a fight response. I use to Box and my resting demeanor at times look sat though I am not in a good mood until I smile or talk people say I come off serious or that they just dont know how to engage. Pearl you always meet people and befriend them in areas where they are needing others to see them in the way they humbly are and not the other stuff they could Identify by. Thank you for always being genuine. Even when you have handled people talk about you in Japanese and more. I Thank you for helping to break the stereotypes in Japanese culture and bringing a new world to the Japanese people and other cultures as you simply think your visiting them they in turn now get a IRL that is not based on a movie or scrip but a genuine one and now they can paint a fresh picture and god back and restructure their hearts to mood forward. I bet it's challenging. May God bless you maam and show you protection and grace even more as you love people passed their walls of Jericho and indifferences. Be blessings and continue to be a blessing and showing others grace. You show so much grace maam and thats huge Enjoy.

    I've went through something even worse. I'm from Connecticut USA but was adopted by a Puertorrican couple and they took me to Puerto Rico. There since Kindergarten I was discriminated in everything including love. In my teens no Puertorrican girl accepted me. Well 12 years ago I relocated to New York and here the government mistook me for somebody with my same name and ruined my life. I ended up homeless and lost my career in the medical field. Here I'm discriminated because I'm Hispanic!!!😡Which I'm NOT I'm half black half white all American!😇

    She is definitely a very pretty girl, though the Japanese men might feel intimidated by her because she doesn't have the typical style of a Japanese girl and shes tall too.
    But not to worry, the right guy will come along and he'll be the best one for you.
    Your beautiful, smart and humble and those are great qualities to have, so dont loose hope 🙏🤗

    I am really sorry to hear about her negative experiences growing up. I definitely wish her the best and believe she deserves it❣️ Having said that, I want to clarify that I am not here to put her or anyone in similar situations down. I just don’t think this kind of one-sided story is appropriate. Its divisiveness only sends the wrong message to both Japanese society and the rest of the world. I have friends who were born in Japan just like her and don’t look Japanese at all, but they were treated extremely well in schools and were well accepted in various situations. Many people even envied how well they were treated and felt that they were often seen or treated better than regular Japanese people. It’s quite the opposite. That exists as well.

    I'm learning Italian in Italy now and a woman from Switzerland told me a funny story yesterday about a waiter who absolutely refused to talk to her in Italian. She proceeded to let the man know she was here to learn the language, however, he would continue to respond in broken English. Finally she had the idea to ask "Wait- do you even speak Italian?" at which point he annoyingly gave up trying to speak English. Of course it's not as bad here as in Japan- it's still relatively easy to find people to talk to.

    I've studied human body language, psychology, and psychiatry for over 40 years. As a professor with a PhD, my extensive experience allows me to diagnose individuals through video analysis, as the signs are unmistakable and involuntary.
    In the case of the girl in the video, she exhibits clear signs of aggression and could potentially become extremely violent if provoked. She struggles with self-control and frequently appears agitated and defensive. It's evident that Japanese society is not a suitable environment for her. Due to her genetics and developed personality, she might feel more at ease in a suburban area of LA. She will likely never feel mentally happy or secure in Japan, as the cultural and social environment there seems to exacerbate her underlying issues.

      Thank you for your assessment Doctor, Its good to have the diagnosis of a trained professional instead of just the emotional ramblings of the easily offended in the comments.

      @@dan8910100 Thankyou. Navigating the psychological struggles of being Black and mixed-race in Japanese society presents a complex set of challenges rooted in societal perceptions, identity formation, and experiences of discrimination. Japan's cultural emphasis on homogeneity often leaves mixed-race individuals feeling alienated, a sentiment compounded by racial discrimination and societal expectations.
      Firstly, the experience of mixed-race individuals, particularly those with Black heritage, involves significant social and psychological challenges. The term "hāfu" is commonly used in Japan to describe people of mixed-race heritage, and while it is generally accepted, it also underscores the sense of being different. People of Black and mixed-race heritage often face heightened visibility and vulnerability to discrimination due to their distinct physical appearance.
      Children of mixed-race, especially those with Black heritage, frequently encounter bullying in school environments and struggle with identity issues as they navigate their dual heritage. This struggle often manifests as a feeling of not truly belonging in either the Japanese or their other cultural communities. This internal conflict can lead to confusion and psychological distress, exacerbated by a lack of adequate support from parents and educators who might not fully understand or address their unique challenges.
      Additionally, societal perceptions and expectations place immense pressure on these individuals to conform to a singular cultural identity. The Japanese notion of "chigau," meaning different, also implies being wrong, further stigmatizing those who do not fit the homogenous mold. This cultural bias can lead to internalized self-doubt and affect the overall mental well-being of mixed-race individuals .
      As adults, these individuals often face systemic discrimination in the workforce. Employers may be reluctant to hire them due to concerns about their ability to integrate into the company culture or because of biases against their perceived foreignness. This economic discrimination adds another layer of psychological burden, impacting their career prospects and financial stability .
      To mitigate these challenges, it is crucial for mixed-race individuals and their families to foster a strong sense of self-identity and pride in their diverse heritage. Encouraging bilingualism and cultural exploration can help build confidence and a secure sense of belonging. Moreover, societal change is essential; greater awareness and acceptance of Japan's growing diversity can help dismantle the stereotypes and prejudices that perpetuate these psychological struggles.
      In conclusion, the psychological struggles faced by Black and mixed-race individuals in Japan are deeply intertwined with societal attitudes towards race and identity. Addressing these issues requires both personal resilience and broader cultural shifts towards inclusivity and acceptance,however it may take Japan decades to slowly change,for more fragile personalities like Ajuchan it may be far mentally healthier to just relocate permanently.

    TY for sharing this video. Ajuchan's experience is not much different from the numerous YT videos which discuss racism across Asia... and across Europe...and across Latin America...and Australia...and across the Middle East...and...is anyone seeing a trend?
    Many blessings to these two. Go where you're celebrated and not just tolerated. Peace and love always. 🙏
