Every time Jesus disciples baptized any one in water they invoked Jesus Name at baptism which is Acts 2:38, Acts 8:14-18, Acts 8:38, Acts 9:18, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 16:15, Acts 16:33, Acts 18:7, Acts 18:8, Acts 22:16 Paul's Baptism). Jesus did not give the COMMANDMENT to be baptized in his Name until later after he rose from the dead and just before he ascended into heaven. The thief or anyone else at that time could not have been baptized in Jesus Name because they did not know about it.
