Check out this first time watching reaction video for Super Mario Bros and see if I can make it through this poorly rated movie. I love terrible movies and this list consists of movies that had the misfortune of receiving a zero percent score. I'm curious as to see if these ratings are justified or are these films secretly hidden gems that everyone hated? I decided to expand my bad movie knowledge and try and watch these bad movie fan favourites.
Check out my first time watching this 1993 worst rated movie, Super Mario Bros, and enjoy my reaction video! Don't forget to like and subscribe for more videos! If you have suggestions for other horror movies I should watch, comment below!

I don't care what ANYONE says.... I absolutely LOVE this movie! Can't call it a "guilty pleasure", because I feel no guilt whatsoever when I enjoy it! Samantha Mathis was really adorable as Daisy, and yeah, it's campy as all get out. But to me, that's it's charm!
It's a fun movie for sure! Thanks for watching!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Now there's a new animated "Super Mario Bros." movie being produced by Illumination Entertainment................with Chris Pratt as Mario. Yes I'm terrified.
I really enjoy the movie too. Such a unique take on the game. I really enjoy the music. I like the dirty grunge look of it. It's just a fun movie to watch.
Lol yes Its a masterpiece. I dunno what everyone is talking about haha. The movie that almist killed Bob Hoskins, that had actual strippers on set, that John and Bob were both wasted for the entire filming......How could you not love this movie.....all you gotta do is trust the fungus 😄
(In all seriousness I actually do like this movie but its fucking terrible lol.....Mario Mario and Luigi Mario......oh jeez the dialogue is so awful that its great)
@@zachariousmccool5768 This counts as one of those movies that is "So bad, it's actually GOOD!" At least, in my eyes. I love it for it's campiness, but then again, I was born in the late 1960s, and given the television shows I was exposed to early in life (aside from the Vietnam coverage on the news), it's actually no wonder that I have an affinity for this kind of thing.
There is kind of a sequel to the mario brothers movie and it was presented in the form of a web comic, I believe it was made by one of the original writers of the movie, sadly the comic isn't finished and it hasn't been updated since 2015
It was NOT by the writers of the movie, it was 100% fan-made
The cast did not get along with directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. The script was altered several times. An even better Super Mario Bros. film was released ONLY in Japan in 1986.
Similar to Super Mario Bros, I'd have to mention Double Dragon as an absolute disaster of a movie adapted from a video game series. And of course, there's the guilty pleasure that is Street Fighter
I’ll add them to watch list! Thanks for the suggestions and thanks for watching!
I used play super Mario bros on my old Nintendo entertainment system it was good game and which you go through 8 levels through pipe tunnels
YES! Now I want to play the game again lol Thanks for watching!
I have to admit, I kind of like this movie. It might be because I never played Mario brothers as a kid, admittedly.
It's an entertaining movie, just not a good story. :/ Thanks for watching!
I'm a sucker for weird dystopian societies, so I dig this one because it's just such a strange take on the videogame. There's a lot of background gags and you can tell the production team had a blast making this weird Mad-Max version of Mario. Good movie? Of course not! But at least an interesting one.
Should've replayed a couple mario games before reacting to this
I should have!, that would have been fun! Thanks for watching!
This movie really sucked. But it was good world building
"The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers. It was a f-ckin' nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! F-ckin' nightmare. F-ckin' idiots." - Bob Hoskins (2007)
Oh man they were married! 😬😬 That sounds like a terrible idea.
@@ReelReviewsWithJen They actually made the original Max Headroom tv movie, the one that eventually spawned off the American shows. So they had something going for them. But then Super Mario Bros tanked their careers for good.
@@dosnostalgic love that show 😊
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Yeah like a woman being in charge of a cleaning crew! Lol
@@lectornox 😊
John Leguizamo and Hoskins got drunk during the filming of their scenes.
Good for them, I’d drink my way through that movie too! The dialogue hit your ears like tin. Everyone sounded like a copy of a cliche. How they managed to lock in a cast like that for trash like this, is inexplicable.
I remember being a kid and a huge fan of SMB, this movie was very frustrating to my kid brain, but I still watched it many times.
Mario is played by Bob Hoskins, who previously appeared in the Spielberg production, ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' directed by Robert Zemeckis.
and he was in Hook!
He was honestly a good choice for Mario ngl
Bob Hoskins, 1943-2014, said he hated working on this movie, saying "it was a terrible f--king nightmare, that the Directors were a bunch of f--king idiots, the script was being rewritten during production and the the Directors didn't know what the hell they were thinking."
Shaine I heard the same thing it was on a fan site for this movie 🙃
Yeah that sounds incredibly frustrating, especially when the material is only getting worse somehow 😬
@@ReelReviewsWithJen 🤗agreed
And he also almost died while making it too!
This was just a few years after he made "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". Hard to fathom.
there was something endearing about this movie as a kid...
I think it all depends on when you watched this. If you watched this as a kid you loved it.
I liked the mario movie as a kid because i didn’t worry it wasn’t “cool” with the cool people and it had a dirty, rocknroll-ish feel I liked.
I don't care what everyone says. I have loved Super Mario Bros. since I was 9 and I bought it on DVD in 2008 and I still own the DVD to this day. Yes, it was poorly made and adapted for the screen. But, this was the first time a video game was made into a live action movie and people shouldn't be so hard on it. Super Mario Bros. is a fun and entertaining movie for kids and adults. Bob Hoskins was a good Mario and he did what he could with the role.
You know what horror movie would give you alot of material? "Dead Alive", aka "Braindead"; a horror comedy that is considered the goriest movie ever made, directed by Peter Jackson (yes, the guy who made the Lord of the Rings trilogy). I predict alot of "ewww" and "bleeaaghh" commentary lol
It’s on the watch list 😬 yeah I’ve heard it’s A LOT.
Lol in Spain that movie was renamed "Tu madre se ha comido a mi perro" (Your mother ate my dog)
@@JuntosXlaLibertadMileyBuIIrich interesting info 🍩
Be sure to find the unrated version. It's funnier.
6:00, a dimension where Dinosaurs evolved into a humanoid society, a place called Dino Hatten. It's supposed to be a dark twisted version of New York. The Production Designer got inspiration from BATMAN, Blade Runner, The Wizard of Oz, and. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
I like the concept! Sadly I don't think they executed it well :(
In fact, the production designer DID Blade Runner.
No I'm feeling old. I actually met one of my old girlfriends at a pay phone when I was a teen. She was using the phone and I was waiting to use it.
That’s so cute! 2021 version - looking for a phone charger? lol thanks for watching!
Did you also recognize the de-evolution guns were repurposed Super Scopes from the SNES?
I didn’t! My video game experience is limited at best lol
Remember, Illumination is making the animated Super Mario Movie next year...
...based on the INSANE Cast, it will probably Fail.
I would love to see you react to Dragonball Evolution & The Last Airbender.
The film was a box office and critical disappointment, making $40 million dollars against a $50 million dollar budget. It now holds 24% on RT. Yet a reboot to the movie is in development from Illumination Studios and Universal. It was released May 28th, 1993, 2 weeks before the release of JURASSIC PARK, which was Critical and Box Office success.
This was before any of the characters had any personality other than the cartoon they had in the 80s. Plus I like how they did there own thing on this movie (Eventhough it looks like they didnt do their research) Reeeeeally wish they went with the Mushroom Kingdom instead of Dinohattan. The world of Mario is supposed to be colorful but i do like the world in this movie a bit
Nintendo games that became movies? Double Dragon is all I got besides Mario. Street fighter and Sonic for Sega. Honestly, I could watch Stone Cold Steve Austin movies over video game movies, accept Sonic. However Sonic is the newest, so tech is way better.
There's a fan extended cut with deleted scenes (some scenes where deleted for baffling reasons as they explain stuff) on the internet archive. Not sure if it's legal or not but no one's probably gonna claim it.
(It's called the morton jankel cut)
Who wrote this? Parker Bennett, Terry Runte, and Ed Solomon. That's who you have to blame. lol 😂
Not exactly. See, several treatments were made for this movie, some way better, including one that was going to take place in an entirely mushroom-based fantasy land, almost like the game. But then these directors showed up with this idea that felt like a completly unrelated movie. Also, the writers's script was almost entirely replaced during filming becuase every day there was a major script re-write by the directors until they were fired from their own production and the first production manager finished the movie without them.
Oh God nooooo this movie is unwatchable a kid in my 3rd grade class recommend it on vhs my family member rented it from a video store I was 10 In 1994 be honest mac and me was way more worse than this movie we recorded it on vhs took me 3 times to memorize the pilot of this movie 🤗
It's hard to make Mario's world believable unless it's an animated movie.
It almost happened back then. Before this movie even happened. Tom S. Parker and Jim Jennewein wrote one in 1991. Definitely better and more accurate than this.
I don't care how bad this movie is. I love the fact that they took the Mario games and turned it in to THIS.
I legitimately LOVE this movie!
Reminds me of the Double Dragon movie I did see the Mario 🎥 back in the day haha 😂
The Mario Bros are plumber that's enough for me to know that this is a super mario movie
Oh, I have another bad movie for you,Jen. Ice Pirates, from 1984, starring Robert Urich. It has a pitiful 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is so bad it's got space herpes. I'm not making that up. lol 🤣😆
Haha! 9%!!! 😬😬 That's so low! Yikes, I'll add it to the list!
Movies with "bad reputations"? Okay, Jen--We've been WAITING for some reactor to do Xanadu for the first time, and find out just how, quote-fingers, "bad" it really is...Heheh. >: )
I'll add it to the list! Thanks for the suggestion!
For another good Fiona Shaw performance, you should watch Undercover Blues, also from 1993. It stars Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner, and a scene stealing performance from Stanley Tucci.
"Hi Morty!"
I love that film.
Oh good to know! Thanks for the suggestion!
18:10 Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good...
This movie is a mess. It is one reason why we don't have a Legend Of Zelda movie. However various items from the video games appear, in at least name, throughout the film. These include Bob-ombs (a deceptively tiny wind-up bomb in the film), Thwomps (Thwomp Stompers are oversize footwear), Koopahari Desert (most of the world is this desert), Yoshi (a baby T. rex), Goombas (transformed citizens), Big Bertha (the woman who steals the pendant and that Mario dance with later on), and Bullet Bills (a cartridge with a face used to power the Thwomp Stomper boots), mention of Fry Guy(a poster on the wall when the woman checks in the plumbers tool belts at the bar), and on the projector screens in the boom boom bar there is a graphic of Bowser's hideout from Super Mario World game being bounced around.
If you want a live action take on Zelda, watch “the Legend of Neil”. Some adult content warning
Haha, I've only ever seen this film in "reaction" form as I just can't bring myself to sit through the whole thing, so thanks for this Jen. 👍 There are other video games that have been made into films, The House Of The Dead 3% rating, BloodRayne 4% rating, Alone In The Dark 1% rating, all directed by Uwe Boll and all awful. Don't react to those though as if you criticise them you'll get the director wanting to fight you in a boxing ring, as he's done with other critics, Lol.
Other Terrible Movies:
Still hopin for Sleepwalkers lol
My favorite bad Movie: The Happening
The Wickerman (2006)
Troll 2
Jingle all the Way (I love it but I know its bad)
Enjoy!
Jen already did Troll 2.
3:50, like Masters Of The Universe, it was meant to be made for fans of the video games.
Ah yeah that makes sense, I feel like they definitely missed the mark for their intentions lol
@@ReelReviewsWithJen it was rated PG in the states🙃
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Hollywood has always had trouble understanding video games. They always do the same thing they used to do with comic books. Rewrite everything and assume it will be ok as long as they keep some of the names the same.
This was the first movie I remember seeing in the Theater. It was also the first time I ever cussed. After the movie ended, i was sitting between my mom and dad. My dad goes "what'd you think?" and I yelled out "The F^ck was that!?"
🤗
A valid response for sure! Thanks for watching!
It was on at the movie theater this year.
I unironically love this goofy ass movie
Haha yeah it’s so bad but also entertaining haha
There are GTA movies vastly better than this...this ****.
Despite the tease at the end, there was no sequel, in fact this movie did so bad that Nintendo never released another movie. There is, however a rumor of an upcoming animated Mario movie.
Okay good to know! I'll keep an eye out for it! Maybe animated is the way to go, thanks for watching!
I personally think Mario was better off dodging barrels in Donkey Kong. 😂
Yessss! Better acting skills from both Mario and Donkey Kong lol
9:30, that's exactly what happened! Lol!
This is absolutely one of my favorite movies. Yes I know it's a terrible Mario movie but it's an entertaining movie. Much like the later Resident Evil movies. So bad their good territory.
Matthew this movie is unwatchable you like this watch manos hands of fate at least its watchable uncut 🙃
React to the super mario bros 2023 movie
Daisy is played by Samantha Mathis. She dated River Phoenix shortly before his death in 1993, the same year this movie came out.
I love River Phoenix and that’s exactly how I know her, and from the movie The Thing Called Love.
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Ah, The Thing Called Love. I do remember that. Sandra Bullock was also in that.
I dunno its ok for me i mean ive seen much worse but this is at least somewhat following a plot
It’s definitely not the worst thing I’ve seen, it’s an entertaining movie just badly written :/ thanks for watching!
The film that explicitly introduced the Multiverse to the *Ishtar Cinematic Universe* !
Yikes!!., Trust the Fungus! Jeez, how did Dennis Hopper get roped into this extravaganza? Surprisingly, this bombed big time, and was a massive financial failure! Thanks for sharing Jen!
Thanks for watching! Yeah they must have offered him an enormous amount of Koopa Coins 😬

Other films based on video games you should watch are :-
Street Fighter (1994), Wing Commander (1999), Lara Croft - Tomb Raider (2001), Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life (2003), Alone in the Dark (2005), Doom (2005), Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time (2010), and the Milla Jovovich Resident Evil films.
I liked the game and this movie.
There are a number of game to film adaptations:
Resident Evil series - Milla Jovovich
Various by the director Uwe Boll - Farcry, BloodRayne (Kristanna Loken), In the Name of the King (Jason Statham)
Tomb Raider (obviously)
Wing Commander (Freddie Prinze Jr/Saffron Burrows)
Doom (Dwayne Johnson/Karl Urban)
DOA: Dead or Alive (various)
Prince of PersiaL the Sands of Time (Jake Gyllenhaal)
To name but a few, most of them are worth a watch & react, only some of Uwe Boll's films are as bad as the above film.
Nope. Not gonna watch this, I'm still traumatized from the first viewing.
That's completely understandable, there needs to be a bad movie sufferers support group.

My name is Ken and . . . I . . . I saw Super Mario Bros. The Movie. Rented it from Blockbuster Video back in 1994. I just couldnt help myself! All of my friends had seen it. I fell victim to peer pressure.
@@darthken815 Hi, Ken!
Street Fighter (1994), with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia is pretty terrible, and the 1993 Jackie Chan movie City Hunter also leans heavily into the Street Fighter II video game. There's also the 1995 Mortal Kombat, 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and 1994's Double Dragon. These are just ones based on arcade/early console video games.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Mortal Kombat franchise
Rampage
Street Fighter
Double Dragon
Warcraft
Assassin's Creed
All live action video game based movies...
Also kind of video game movies:
Detective Pikachu
Tron franchise
The Wizard
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
The Last Starfighter
Those last two movies btw are excellent!!!
Best Regards!
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
Thank you for watching and commenting! You too!
Well, if you are interested in bad movies based on popular video games, you should check out Street Fighter (1994) and Mortal Kombat (1995). You won’t be disappointed (or you will because, you know: Terrible movies! 😂)
So, of course, you must now watch the film adaptation of the NES game Double Dragons 😂.
Oooo and Street Fighter with Van Dam! Oh and Wing Commander with Matthew Lillard, um…um…. Of course Resident Evil and Tomb Raider…🤔
There have been a fair amount of video game movies, but most of them have been bad or average. My favorite would probably be "The Wizard" with Fred Savage, Christian Slater, and Jenny Lewis, which was about a video game tournament involving Super Mario Bros 3, but part of that might be nostalgia (I would have been 10 when it came out in 1989).
You absolutely must react to a Neil Breen film...Fateful Findings would be my first choice (I, too, really enjoy horrible movies lol), but anything by Neil Breen is so fundamentally bad that they've earned cult status. I only recently stumbled upon Mr. Breen's body of work, and I've been having a blast. A Jack of all trades it would seem, Neil Breen does it all...writes , directs, produces, caters, edits, scores, and stars in all of his master'pieces' (of shite). Come on down the rabbit hole, Alice...we're all mad down here 😁
A few bad movie suggestions for you:Tammy and the T-Rex,and (and I think you’ll be enticed to watch this based on the title alone) Sorority Babes in the Slimeball-Bowl-a-Rama.
Now you have learned the lesson. Don't go watching other distasteful movie adaptations.
Ps: Stay away from Dragonball Evolution, Howard The Duck and Alone in The Dark.
I haven't seen anyone mention it, but the giant guys with tiny heads are supposed to be Goombas. Yeah, the weak little mushroom enemies that are basically all head and a pair of shoes? That's these big galoots.
Also, Big Bertha, the large woman in the red dress, was named after the fish in Mario 3 in the bobbing-up-and-down water levels that could swallow Mario whole.
His name is Dennis Hopper, not “Hooper," Jen. 😂 lol He went on to do Speed the following year, so this movie didn't ruin his career. lol
I haven’t seen Speed 😬
@@ReelReviewsWithJen You should put it on a watch list if you start a new category other than horror and bad movies. lol
you can tell hopper is just having fun he didnt give a flying fart, most of his movies he is just having fun
While I actually do like this movie.....its terrible. But while I am a big Bob Hoskins fan I think (at this time) he is literally too perfect to play Mario. It's just such a shame that the writers basically didn't even know what Mario was even about and almost killed him.
they made a sequel comic book, it's online, if you've ever played Super Mario Bros. 2, they encounter Wart, who is taking over the land of sub con, or the dream world and there are ying yang symbols in it, which Luigi has on his t shirt
There actually was made a sequel to the Movie... relatively recently too i think in the form of a Comic Book called, fittingly enough Super Mario Bros 2
I saw this movie in theatres with my mom and dad when I was little... Looking at this movie now I'm like WTF did I just watch as a kid! XD
I have no idea why, but I like this movie even if its bad. Maybe it's the cast. I usually dislike movies based on my favorite games, but this one stuck with me.
I understand why people call it terrible though. It's nothing like mario.
This movie is horrible but SOOOO fun to watch especially with friends and a nice beverage or smoke
Edit: There are no other Live Action Nintendo Things because after THIS movie they lost faith that it can work out
No. There isn't any other live Nintendo movies. Why? cause of this movie. Once Nintendo saw it they immediately regretted it and said "No more movies using our games!". As you saw in the end, that there was a set up for a sequel but like i said, once Nintendo saw the movie they were really upset. Bob and John were pretty much drunk the whole time cause they hated the script that much and being drunk is the only way that they got through it. Both Bob and John lay blame on the Producers/Directors who were husband and wife at the time but things went down hill with their marriage during filming and there were too many cooks in the kitchen when it came to ideas and the couple arguing and going back and forth on their own ideas. So there will never be another Nintendo based movie ever.
Shocker of a film, There are no redeeming features to it at all.....worth all the bad reviews it gets
Other games that have been made into films:
Tomb Raider
Hitman
Mortal Combat
Street fighter
Resident Evil
Silent Hill
Warcraft
i'm sure there are many more but that's all i can think of at the mo
I don't know, I liked this movie as a 13 year old
Yeah that’s fair, it’s entertaining, just badly written lol thanks for watching!

5:09, the other dimension!
Mario is the bravest. He kept telling Luigi to talk to the girl. And he was the oldest responsible, protective, cautious. Also, my favorite part about this movie was how sexy Mario was (to me anyway).
I remember this one quite well, it was the day after I graduated high school and my friends and I said what the hell and went to see it. After it was over we all looked at each other and agreed we should sneak into Jurassic Park to watch it again to help erase SMB from our memories. We thought they owed us a free movie after that. lol

Me : yeah indeed, about 90-100 minutes too long
This film holds a special place in my heart, because it's the first film I remember seeing in the theater...
Dennis Hopper (King Koopa) once said in interviews how his son asked him why he did this movie and answered so he could have shoes and the kid saying, "Dad, I don't need shoes that badly"

Actually there kinda is, but it’s a comic book continuing where the movie left off based off Super Mario Bros 2/Doki Doki Panic.
I forgot about the use of the nintendo controller known as the “super scope” when mario and luigi use the weird bazookas to take out bowser lol.
As bad as this movie was, you have to give credit to Dennis Hopper for his over the top acting in scenes he knew were just silly.
They had 48 million to make this and make 38 million worldwide
