- Restoration video of a 1874 "Gras" rifle we have found while magnet fishing.
Judging by its condition, it has only been in the water for a few months and has probably been stolen. We found some sporting rifles nearby, which had been stolen during a burglary according to the authorities (the video is also posted in the channel)
This type of weapon is classified "collection" in France and is therefore not traced by its serial number.
This video is only a restoration of a historical object and in no way about the apology of weapons.

This particular rifle was used by the French army from 1874 and was assembled from a "Chassepot" rifle barrel dating from 1866. It originally fired 11 mm Gras ammunition.
When it became obsolete, the rifle was rechambered to 16 gauge for hunting and some parts like the rear sight were removed.
As i am an amateur, please leave a comment if you have any suggestions for improvement regarding restoration techniques.

That’s an old rifle but it wasn’t lost too long ago. The wood is in relatively good condition and the gun has Phillips head screws that were invented after 1933.

It is a Chassepot model 1866/1874 rifle converted to a 16 shotgun and the marks seals and number that the barrel and the mechanism box present are of french and belgian origin, made by the arms factories and master gunsmiths

@@samuelbuch396 not at all. As soon as you find the 74 markings on a chassepot that mean that the cartridge is different so it's a Gras. But as enrique correctly say it's a Gras converted for hunting in the 20's. Not rare at all here in France, nobody want those shit. No more military guns and bad for real hunt, that explain why it end in this river.
Il s'agit bien d'un fusil Gras (ou plutôt d'une carabine ou d'un mousqueton Gras, comme l'indique le levier d'armement coudé), et non d'un Chassepot, transformé en fusil de chasse.
Le fusil Gras est effectivement un dérivé, sorti en 1874, du fusil Chassepot 1866, d'où le marquage 1866/74 des premiers exemplaires. D'autres fusils Gras ont directement été construit sur le modèle 1874 et n'ont que ce marquage.
Les différences entre les deux armes sont le calibre : 11,8 mm en cartouche papier pour le Chassepot et 11 mm en cartouche métallique pour le Gras. Le canon du Chassepot a donc reçu un tube réducteur (1866-74T) ou a carrément été changé (1866-74N) pour devenir un Gras. Les marquages ne précisaient pas forcément le type de conversion du canon, comme ici.
La culasse du Gras est également différente et plus moderne. Celle du Chassepot (à aiguille) nécessite un armement manuel en tirant sur le bec situé l'arrière de celle-ci une fois verrouillée, armement qui se fait dès le verrouillage de la culasse (à percuteur) sur le Gras (comme on peut le voir à la fin du film).
La plupart des fusil Gras va être modifiée en 1880 (ce qui n'est pas le cas de celui-ci, car absence du marquage M80 en dessous du premier) pour éviter que l'étui de la cartouche se coince ou se brise lors du tir. Certains fusils seront également modifiés à partir de 1914 pour passer au 8 mm x 50 R, calibre du fusil Lebel 1886 (marquage M14 à côté du M80). Il y a enfin eu une modification en 1832 pour pouvoir tirer la balle N (marquage N sur le tonnerre).
Même s'il n'est pas resté longtemps le fusil principal de l'armée française (1874/1887), le Gras a quand même été distribué pendant longtemps (première et deuxième guerres mondiales), essentiellement aux troupes auxiliaires, quand c'était nécessaire.

I was very confused by the condition of the gun, considering how old the Gras is, and the Chassepot action, would mean that if it had been in the water since the last time they were used in combat, it'd likely be a very rusty mess. The description really cleared things up lol
It had a modern Phillips head screw. Clear as day. Right in the beginning
Anyway, this Gras is a military rifle converted for hunting, with a smooth bore. It has nothing military anymore and its value is very low. Such modified Gras are quite common in France
I hope the french armory museum will take their heirloom after you restore the rifle without erase the markings
It's not that rare for a museum, we have at least 100 000 of them in circulation here
Phillips head screws were invented in the 1930s for Cadillacs. Somebody did some work to it long long after it was built.

En fait, même s'il est resté en service près de 70 ans, le fusil Gras a très peu connu le combat. Il n'a été le fusil règlement de l'armée française que de 1874 à 1886, période durant laquelle il y a eu peu de conflits. Et s'il a été ensuite distribué pendant les premières et deuxièmes guerres mondiales, c'étaient à des troupes qui n'étaient pas censées aller au front.

I read some time ago that a vintage weapon has more value maintained, and does not go to the extreme of polishing it. cleaning and functionality of pieces and recovering the wood that has. Good work!

As others have noted, there is really ZERO chance of a 140+ year old rifle being in this good of condition after having been submerged all that time. I was about to join the chorus of haters, but the video description cleared up the mystery. I follow many restoration channels on YT and many of them artificially age items before restoration and that was my first thought here, I'm so glad I was wrong! Thank you for sharing this.

This type of rifle may be had from Royal tiger imports as they have bought a large portion of a stockpile.
Chasspot rifle, I wonder if maybe it got thrown in the drink during ww2. Nazi germany tried to disarm france and thus looks too much like a modern rifle. It did not look like it was in a bog. This might answer the question of not looking like a 140 year water gun.

Здравствуйте, речь идет о стволе, который был укорочен, на стволе хорошо видны пуансоны различных производителей оружия, которые работали и дорабатывали винтовку chassepot с 1866 года.

Длина ствола наконец слишком мала . Больше похоже на какой то карабин . Скорее всего это оружие действительно когда то было винтовкой . Но сейчас внешний вид говорит что это охотничье ружье . Примерно так же огражданивали бердан номер 2. Наличие винта типа Филипс указывает что это ружье ещё использовалось в 70-е годы 20 века . Возможно позже было действительно утоплено в реке предыдущим хозяином .

I was concerned it would become covered in rust before the restoration could be completed. Im glad you replaced the Phillips screw with the correct type and size. If you ever have another weapon found in the water, you can keep it stored covered in water until you you are ready to restore the item... no rust that way.
Yes you are right, i have another tips, it is to covered it with WD40 but you have to do it every days.
@ im not a restoration expert. But i do know leaving corrosive metals such as iron and some steels in wet or even moist environments they will continue to rust no matter what. PLEASE do not leave old guns sitting in water. Take them out and get the surface rust off, so it wont get worse. There is countless restoration tips and tricks videos here on youtube. Please consider watching some.

I'd suggest, for some weapons which have really damaged Wood stock, to tri to buid up new one. Maybe the woodturning is not your place, but for some cases (not this, but the French revolver) could be a good thing to do.
You are right it would be better. I'm improving my skills with wood
A tip from a carpenter to plug the holes get a piece of the same wood you are working on. Grind it and collect the grinding dust. Mix this with glue and close the holes with it. It looks neater and you don't have to do as much staining or painting. it looks more natural.

@@jasonjones6328 idiot, read the video description. It's most likely only been in the water a few months and was found near stolen sporting rifles. Ergo, there's probably been some modern repair done to it at some point.

That’s in much better condition than the Mauser 1914 pistol I saw you restore. I don’t really think it turned out as well as this one will.

When the metal is not blued I use an anti corossion spray. It's enough for the exhibition if you use it every 2 or 3 years. Thanks !

All Military items are Antique but Everything old items are not Antique, they just old. That rifle will go to be sold by the Manufacturer depot and the serial number and which battle.

Te hare una observación y es qué si quieres restaurar realmente un metal si o si debes efectuar un baño o estañado via electrólisis con otro metal de igual calidad al de la la piesa al restaurar se ase de la misma forma qué se da un baño de oro o plata a las joyas y luego pules el metal suavemente asi casi no quedan huellas de la corrosión del tiempo ni del oxidado ojo si restauras un arma hazlo a la perfección
