  • Will is a 67 year-old jiu jitsu practitioner. He's one of my oldest students. I also have another guy that trains with me who is a bit older, but he has only recently started training with me and is a black belt. In this video he talks a little bit about how he got into training jiu jitsu and more.
    If you're in San Diego North County, check us out. We are located in Vista, CA.

    I'm a 54 year old female. Started 8 months ago and haven't looked back, except to say "I wish I started sooner"! I agree with you 100% , everybody is so nice, and the best part is that they don't treat me different because I'm older, I'm the oldest one in the academy, good 10 years older than the oldest person, who is a purple guy. Nobody "asumes" I won't be able to do something because I'm older or a female, I'm just one more of the group. Had some injuries at the beginning, due to the change in the type of movements (i used to practice karate), but nothing serious, and I prefer to practice with younger folk, as that drives me to push myself harder. Our academy is new, I was one of the first practitioners, our instructors are young and when they opened the academy they brought their friends and fellow competitors, so the atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming and fun! And I love, love, love that the grading system is so fair. Time on the mat, consistency and hard work. I'm not a 20 year old, who is training to compete, but I work hard and hard work is rewarded, what's not to like?

    I started BJJ at 66 and just received my second stripe. For me, the main benefits of BJJ are the social community, safety, and mental aspect of remembering the moves. The main thing that I keep in the back of my mind is choosing sparring partners carefully and tapping out in time. I also like the joking around and friendly, no-ego atmosphere

    Guys, I can not agree with Will more. I'm only 44, but I've had severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome since I was 19 (I had to stop working altogether at the end of 2004). I spend most of my day in bed or on the couch and - if I'm lucky - have 2-3 hours per day where I can function.
    What I don't think folks realize is how modular the BJJ system really is. Although individual instructors have their own way of doing things, the basic format is going to be more or less the same no matter where you go. Which is AMAZING for people with disabilities, because you can plug in or out as you need to.
    I cannot express to you how empowering this thing is. I just got my 2nd stripe on my white belt and - for the first time in my adult life - I don't feel powerless. With CFS, you have to be very Zen about your own vulnerability, or you'll go nuts. But finding a system like this that allows you to (quite literally) fight back against your own weaknesses is valuable beyond words.
    If you're on the fence about starting, I encourage you to jump in as soon as physically possible. When people say it changes your life, they're not even halfway kidding.

    The emotions ran deep for me listening to Will.
    I’m not quite as old but I am 46. I’ve had multiple surgeries and that literally disabled me. I am 6’3, 280lbs. When I began this I was at 320. I started Jiujitsu around February-March 2022. The amount of pain I have is terrible but BJJ literally helps me feel better. After all the surgeries I had multiple doctors and multiple meds. None of that made me any better and in fact was making me worse.
    Somedays the pain makes me want to stay on the couch and off the mats but I keep going. After each class I feel so good. Stretching out, rolling, and sweating it truly is the best medicine I’ve ever taken.
    No more meds for me, and no more doctors. Well I mean things happen but I ain’t virtually living in hospitals anymore. Lol!
    Anyway, glad I found this clip. Truly inspired!

    Complete respect sir. After 50 years of karate I started BJJ on the week of my 60th birthday. I trained for 3 years and stopped when I got a serious hand injury in training. I wish I had started it much earlier. It's a great martial and like other legitimate martial arts it's a beautiful journey that has no end.

My background was in Judo, TKD, Boxing, Wrestling and Krav Maga. I went 50 years with no martial arts after I got out of the USAF, it was too expensive to continue in the civilian world. I'm retired, try to go every day, need to moderate this a bit maybe miss a day now and then to recover.

    I disagree with almost everything he says. BJJ is terrible for the body, the sheering forces on the spine, the twisting, the stacking, etc. My back is wrecked from it. Can't even sit for too long anymore. IF you look at the video, he is "doing" BJJ but he is not training hard. That is fine, keep moving, play around. But "real" BJJ training which is ball-to-the-walls, full-on resistance, a lot of the time will destroy him in short measure it trained with any frequency. Throwing will hurt him too, both giving and receiving. I have seen many older guys satart BJJ, almost none train anymore, and almost all are hurt. The key is to find a place that understands the needs of an older person and allows you to train to that. A lot of clubs cater to 20 year olds. All grappling is hard and destructive on the body. This is why people generally don't wrestle past late 20s. Rarely are 60 year olds doing wrestling for fitness, etc. In Judo, you see some old guys training, but generally they are playing, they are not doing compeition style training anymore. Sorry, BJJ is not for everyone unless individual needs are taken into account and training is much lighter and more playful experiementing is done with a focus on technical training, moving, and minimal sparring. No inverting either.

    • @hoppy760
      @hoppy760  4 года назад +3

      We're talking jiu-jitsu, not wrestling or judo. Wrestling and judo are harder on the body than jiu-jitsu. That's why you don't see older guys wrestling. If you're doing throws, then you need to learn the proper breakfalls and a spring-loaded mat would be recommended, which gives a lot more than mats on concrete.
      In regards to jiu-jitsu, inverting is OK if you're flexible enough to handle it, otherwise, yes, it could be tough on the body. But you don't need to learn how to invert to train jiu-jitsu. You need good training partners and a good school with good instructors running the class. Don't confuse a good instructor as anyone with a lot of awards and medals. A good instructor makes sure the class is safe for everyone and controls the training situations. He knows his students and knows their limitations. He doesn't match an older guy with very little skill with a guy that is a crazy Tasmanian devil.
      Develop your game, especially your guard game and you will be able to avoid having guys invert you against your will.

    • @michaelchen3208
      @michaelchen3208 3 года назад +1

      I started BJJ at age 62 two yes ago, I love it. I love inverting, I did a lot lasso leg through inversion sweep or guard recover, love the inverting motion from reverse DLR to get to the position of crab ride bake taking, love playing deep half guard. It is a good fitness sport for older people if you know to control.

    Kudos for the video content! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you researched - Chireetler Dread Free Rule (probably on Google)? It is a great one of a kind product for learning self effective defence moves minus the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my cousin after many years got cool results with it.
