Their first two albums were for people who were tripping on acid, by their third album they were making music that would take you on a trip even if you weren't on acid. The opening lines "lives of great men all remind us we can make our lives sublime, and, departing, leave behind us footprints on the sand of time" are from a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Loved your reaction, you hit the nail on the head with it. This is from '75 but they were doing stuff like this from 1970 and were pioneers of the sub-genre "space rock". This album was a joint project with science fantasy author Michael Moorcock, who was very big over here at the time. The album and the cover are based, loosely, on one of his books, The Eternal Champion.
The first few lines on Assault and Battery is a quote from old American poet and scholar Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
This was Lemmy's last album with the band before leaving to for Motorhead.
Saw them a few times live and were always terrific. Nik Turner plays Flute and Sax, they had 2 drummers and guitarist Brock always laid down heavy riffs as well as good lead.
    once again, nice reaction, thanks.

I love Hawkwind especially this incarnation of the band. This was Lemmys last album with them before getting fired and starting Motorhead. But lysergically speaking, these guys are in 2nd place with Gong taking the top spot. I urge everyone to give the new version of Gong a try. Daevid Allen died a few years back and now the band is run by Kavus Torabi and that was a big step up sonically speaking. Paul you agreeable bastard, great pick man!

Haha, it's getting too regular, this agreeing stuff, lol. I like Gong too, haha. Met Steve Hillage once but he was solo then. So many inventive european bands from this period. Faust, Nektar, Guru Guru, Tangerine Dream, Amon Duul to name just a few more.

@Glen Plant I found Gong through Steve Hillage. After he went solo I saw him open for ELO in Philadelphia. Gong and Hillage were not big names in Philadelphia or the US really but I was hooked immediately. After Daevid Allen left Gong they became more of a jazz type outfit and they reminded me of Soft Machine. They even had Allan Holdsworth playing with them at one point. I like all of it!

"It was like Star Trek with long hair and drugs" ~ Lemmy. A Space Ritual Alive In Liverpool And London is a must, it is considered by many to be the best live album ever recorded and is the best album cover ever made, hands down. Hawkwind is the band that Lemmy first played bass with, which happened by default when the bass player didn't show up at his first gig with the band. Lemmy does some of his best work on the album,Orgone Accumulator being my favorite. At one point Lemmy said that if he hadn't been sacked he'd still be with the band. Johnny Rotten said that there would have been no Sex Pistols if it wasn't for Hawkwind's song Brainstorm. Welcome aboard the good spaceship Hawkwind, a genre of one fueled by LSD, except for Lemmy (speed whiskey and cigarettes) Thanx for the Hawkwind reaction, Here's a great BBC documentary about the early days of Hawkwind with Lemmy, Terry, Nik, and others. Kudos Paul !!!: ~ ruclips.net/video/9zBNQL7Uo9w/видео.html

Psychedelic space rock, with metal overtones before there was metal. I love Hawkwind's sound. And the horns are so good in this context, because horn players don't think about music the same way as guitar players, so you get a totally different vibe. Very cool.

Hawkwind: around when Hendrix was playing and still around now. One continuous band? Not exactly. Like 50 bands in 1. Love the prominent Lemmy bass here, but overall this jam predates the arrival of their genius lyricist the mad Robert Calvert.

A great reaction guys. You gotta open up that gatefold cover for full effect! These two tracks and a couple of others on the album have a retro psychedelia feel but the production is crisp. The previous 3 albums had a 'wall of sound' effect making them a bit fuggy but that adds to the appeal I think - production not as refined as this but the instruments work because of way the band uses them. Anyways, Hawkwind is not a rabbit hole, its an interdimensional wormhole spanning decades and complete with a world of solo stuff and lots of variety.

I'm a bit behind on this one but they hit a definite peak here before reinventing themselves.
Lemmy of Motorhead fame was a member at this point and the same year recorded the track "Motorhead" with Hawkwind before going on to form Motorhead.
If you liked this, try something from the year before like "Psychedelic Warlords (Disappear In Smoke)", "D-Rider" or maybe something from slightly later that has a completely different feel like "Reefer Madness" or "The Aubergine That Ate Rangoon".

To do these 2 songs proper justice you really need to listen to the whole of that first side in one go, as the 3 songs that come after those 1st 2 songs will give you a greater insight into how diverse and magical Hawkwind are. the 4th song for example 'Opa Loka' is actually like some king of early rave / dance tune (Hawkwind are indeed known as being pioneers and influencers of the original rave scene from the late 80's onwards, as well as being pioneers and a massive influence on the Punk scene which came a year or 2 after this album) The whole Hawkwind back cataloue from 1970 to mid 80's is especially filled with absolute gold, both lyrically and musically.
