Hello! I live in Brampton ON, is there anything I can do as a citizen to improve our area's biodiversity? I have been looking for native tree seeds, and this winter ill be stratifiying Sumacs, Locusts and a few others. But I want to do more for my area, any ideas? Thank you!
That’s so great to hear that you’re interested and excited about the biodiversity in the Brampton area! It sounds like you are already doing a lot of great work. I would encourage you to look through the Toronto and Credit Valley Conservation Authority websites for volunteer opportunities, citizen science projects, and other ways to get involved. The conservation groups are doing great work and there are always numerous ways to contribute to the work they are doing. There may also be Brampton specific environmental organizations you could look into. Thanks so much for watching !
@@DavidBysouth Thanks for the reply! I also wanted to ask about eradiating invasive ants, primarily Myrmica rubra. I am a bit of an ant nerd, so I often go outside to go collect colonies. In our small pockets of natural areas, such as ravines, creeks etc, M. rubra is EVERYWHERE, they pretty much are the only insect on riverbeds. Part of the reason is because they evolved (In Canada) to make new queens in their own nests, without having nuptial flights, which essentially makes immortal colonies. No matter how hard I try every colony I raid keeps coming back, once I raided a colony and collected 40+ queens! I would love to here if there's anything being done to get rid of these
Excellent information and video for inspiring ideas. We have a Nationwide Citizen Science Bird Count once a year in New Zealand. Cheers.
That’s awesome thanks for sharing! There’s lots of great citizen science projects out there!
