The song was a part of the 1985 Power Windows album, which Geddy Lee believes is one of their best albums. The whole album is big, bright, and brilliant, just like the Grand Designs song! Yes, every song is like "Christmas morning" or a kid-in-a-candy-shop! So great!

Maligned by 70’s mainstays, but for many, this synth heavy era is peak Rush. I love it all. They mastered so many different styles and it’s a big part of what made them great..

I think that you’re not a true fan of a band if you can’t accept the band changing their style and experimenting. I got called a fake Genesis fan because I said that I enjoy the material they released in the 80’s and early 90’s even though The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is my favorite Genesis album and was the first Genesis album I heard. Those types of people are just looking to please themselves by going after other people and they’re stuck in their dreamworld and can’t accept that some people have differing opinions to them. Sorry…I’ve just had bad experiences with many Rush and Genesis fans who have gone after me for liking a certain album or period for those two bands. Power Windows is my personal favorite Rush album. It has some of Neil’s best lyrics and playing and some of Geddy’s and Alex’s best playing as well especially in this song, Marathon, The Big Money, Emotion Detector and others.

This album sounds great and sounds great when played really loud! I love the keyboard era! Not one bad song on the album and as a matter of fact every song is a total banger! Every song!

Only in retrospect have I been able to truly appreciate what they accomplished on this album. Never doubted the lyrics, but the music is just a different kind of incredible. I was so against the synths that I would not let myself hear the music. Sadly wasted time..... Makes me want to second guess a lot of things I dismissed. I suppose Neil would have appreciated that lapse in his own way. It is so ordinary that I am upset that I let myself do it. I need to let myself deviate from the norm...

For more that sounds like this, try Middletown Dreams or Marathon from this same album. Others have said it, but you could pick any track from this album and you'd like it just as much.
Rush continually changed and evolved. They never wanted to make the same record twice and generally didn't. There were some marked style changes in their history and not everyone was on board or understood what they were doing when the styles changed. In 1976 they released 2112, then rapid fire 1977 was A Farewell to Kings, 1978 Hemispheres, 1980 Permanent Waves, 1981 Moving Pictures, 1982 Signals, 1984 Grace Under Pressure and 1985 Power Windows. If you listened to 2112 and then Power Windows back to back you'd be shocked to think it was the same band. 9 years, 7 studio albums, hundreds (if not thousands) of tour dates and change and growth through it all. What a fun ride.
You guys have heard about 15 songs of Rush, only about 180 to go!!! With very few misses in there.

  • @adam872

Yeah, this song is "sneaky good" At the time, it came out, I was a 16 year old metal head and the keys were not my fav. But this song is so well done. So well composed, arranged, and executed, it's become a real treasured track to me. Neil's fills are insane, even for him. Alex's guitar, though thinner than his early 80's sound, is also crazy good. The chord shapes and progressions are so good. Pinch harmonics and incredible textures and a phenomenal solo. And Geddy's bass is... well, it's classic Geddy. I love the feel of the different sections of this song and how the passion ebbs and flows. Really cool song overall.

From the beginning, Rush was a band that toured, so the vast majority of their songs were designed to be able to be recreated live. This is partly because they got really bad reviews (cough, Rolling Stone, cough) early in their career, so to remain a working band, they had to tour. A LOT. Instead of breaking them, it made them much tighter, which is how they were able to pull off their crazy transitions. There are a ton of great songs on Power Windows, the album this song comes from. Manhattan Project, Marathon, Big Money, Emotion Detector, Mystic Rhythms, all of them really are very good.

This was always my favorite jam on this album/
It contains the most elements of early Rush, with tight, punchy, and melodic music
( like Fly By Night, Lakeside Park, Beneath Between and Behind. even Freewill ) with the added element of massive keyboards to layer it well and give it that 80’s pulse and vibe.
It really is a powerful piece of Rush and I was thrilled when they revived it for their 2012 Tour.

The crazy thing about Neil is that he described playing on a tour as being in a car crash on a nightly basis, since they played like 3 hours (no opening act in later tours, so all Rush, no filler). Then after doing a 3 hour show, instead of chilling in a tour bus or plane, he literally rode his motorcycle to the next town on the tour. Just crazy.

Geddy and Alex usually write the music and Neil writes most of the lyrics. Around the period of this album and the next (1985-87) Rush developed a program called Rush Into Learning with Canadian public schools, where English vlasses would examine Neil's lyrics. Ironically, The Professor was a high school dropout. But he was a voracious reader.
As per the Working Man live video, Rush got their first US airplay in Cleveland. They are from Torontol, but playing Cleveland is practically a hometown show for them. Speaking of, watch their Hall of Fame induction by Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins and then the speeches. Pure Alex. Alex and Geddy grew up together. They only met Neil after their original drummer left after the first album/tour (1974) for health reasons. Neil was the best drummer, but guaranteed his spot when he said he wrote lyrics, as Geddy and Alex didn't really like doing that. They ended up releasing two albums his first year, 1975. Fly By Night excited the label with the short and catchy title track, but the follow-up, Caress of Steel bombed. It's still one of their least selling albums. Their first full album side song, plus another really long song. Great Sunday, but depressing stories. 2112 (1976) was their make or break. The studio wanted hits. The band decided that if they were going out, it was with a bang. "2112" filed side one. Side two was a bunch of shorter, poppier songs. None were hits, but 2112 sold a lot of records. The rest is history.
Next time try "Headlong Flight," either live or the lyrics video. Their final studio album and their return to prog rock. Keep in mind they recorded it between 57-59 years old, then tours for a couple years before Neil retired.
Lastly, then check "Losing It" from Signaks, 1982. Almost 35 years before they retired but essentially why Neil was done. He could no longer play to the level required without extreme pain. A year later. He was diagnosed with brain cancer.

An amazing song, with vision and meaning far beyond most bands I've ever heard. Fans who turned their backs (and ears) on Rush after their heavier, bass and guitar-based output do not know what they missed... and are still missing. Throughout the 1980s, and well after Moving Pictures, Rush produced such a rich, textured tapestry of greatness, including plenty of chops from our Alex. A farewell to (three) kings from the stage, but never from my playlists!

This is one of my favorite songs by them. The bass line is amazing. and the way they alternate the time signature is so crazy. Seeing them doing this live, oh sweet baby jeebus it was awesome. Great reaction guys. Keep it up. love this whole album.

Gotta either do the studio versions of “The Big Money” off the same album, or “Between The Wheels” off of the previous album Grace Under Pressure. Either one of those tracks are absolute must-do next!

Neil`s percussion on this album is fantastic, especially this track, and the outro is great too, once you learn the timing. Big favourite! The guys were super tight on this record, and some of Geddy`s best bass lines. Alec`s solo a classic too. There`s always a Rush album for you, no matter what your style of music.

While there is the odd dud Rush track, there are no true dud albums. There are however, several masterworks among their 19 studio records. They are 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Power Windows, Counterparts, Vapor Trails & Clockwork Angels. You literally can’t go wrong. They were a pretty creative bunch.

Alex's guitar sounds and arrangements are unbelievable. I will not say anything about Geddy and Neil because they get enough credit already.
