On July 4th 2023, another major milestone was reached in the restoration of diesel-electric locomotive B72, when the locomotive moved under its own power for the first time since 1986. The locomotive moved itself outside the workshops for testing along 6 road.
Expectedly a few minor adjustments were made to the locomotive throughout the day, but all in all the day was successful.
This milestone could not have been reached without the help of many dedicated Steamrail volunteers over this period of time. Many thanks to all those involved either past or present with the restoration of the locomotive.
SEE B72 AT THE 2024 OPEN DAYS -
We are also excited to announce that B72 will be in operation at the 2024 Open Days! See the locomotive's first public appearance since reactivation, an event not to be missed!

I did a lot of work on that thing during the 90s & 2000s during its restoration That includes the strip-down & everything.. Anyway, good to see they've got it up & running again... Don't forget to put small racing greyhoud stickers above the instruments in the cabs boys. The reason we were going to put small racing greyhound racing decals on there when finished is because B72 was nicknamed "The Greyhound" by the drivers back when it was in service because it went bloody hard for a B Class...hence the nickname. She was considered a good unit...

Absolutely would be nice to see some of the Tangerine era in preservation for sure. V/line beat everyone to the punch with A66 but Teacup absolutely would be a nice one. Underrated scheme if you ask me. Also agreed, blue and gold is nice but it's kinda boring to only see it everywhere and nothing else. Then again, I guess that's historically accurate too hah.

Many of our preserved and renovated diesel-electric locomotives in the UK have quite an active retirement on preserved rail lines, as well as on the national network hauling heritage train tours. They can even be seen earning revenue on national rail services and on industrial lines, covering loco and multiple unit shortages. As there are very limited supplies of loco-hauled coaches here on our national rail network these days, they often end up hauling rakes of preserved coaches too.
