I can't keep up with him on tying the calvary knot. After he throws the rope over the horse's neck. I'm not able to follow the critical next move. I wish he'd go thru that first step slower. But he's the best I've found.
I been riding horses since I was a kid, Now I'am 62 and still riding, Mainly English. I watch many Western Movies and seen this rope around horses neck. English Riders sometimes use Marton Gale to keep horse from throwing his head up and extra area to hold onto and not pull on reins. I rode out in Wyoming on a trail ride through BLM lands for a week on organized ride. This Knot you showed me on video will be used by me as my riding consist of trail riding and fox hunting. I have to dismount and lead horse always. This will assist my riding. God Speed Your Travels, Mister T.
Thank you for sharing about your experience! It's an honor to know someone can truly identify our horsemanship to the Old Traditional, Cavalry ways, which has been proven and tested through time and we are proud of implementing in our farm. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video! We talk all the time guessing the use for this. We have seen it in many a old western and wondered the use. Can you use this to hitch the to a rail? We don't have a horse, yet, but are always looking to learn. A women once told use that you should not hitch a horse with it's rein like the do in the old west movies. What do you say?
Is there any trick how to handle this knot when a horse puts his head down to drink water so that he doesn't step his foot in the rope hanging just off his halter leading to the knot?
When your riding in the mountains you don't use this setup. Just unsnap your lead rope from the halter and snap it to your saddle at the breast collar D ring. This knot and lead setup work well for trailering though, loading and unloading.
Ted, do you actually let your horses graze with this rope over their head? Seems dangerous as the rope would soon slide down and over the head and be dragging on the ground. The horse might then step in the loop.

I’ve been wondering how to tie this knot for years. I’ve even bought old calvary manuals looking for instructions. Thanks so much for posting this!
Interesting.
Thank you.
Thankyou Ted. For posting this one 👍👍
You're very welcome! Let us know if you have any topics or concerns you'd like us to cover in our future video productions. Thank you for watching!
I was curious how to do a Cavalry Knot, because I seen it in the movies so many times.
I have been taught something new. I like that you always have a lead rope. That is very handy!
Thanks! Had to slow it down to .25 speed, but that's probably b/c I'm dyslexic. But I think I've gotten the hang of it. ;)
Similar to what was learned by me from Cav troops as a boy during WWII .kenxqed♫ Whinperer
