  • EFL Teacher Training - Error Correction
    Part of the learning process for language learners is making errors. A challenge for many teachers is deciding when and how to correct their students.
    This EFL teacher training video looks at when a teacher should not correct, when they should correct and if they are going to correct students’ errors, what error correction methods are available.

    Pete, you gave me the best delayed error correction activity years ago that I use all the time. You choose 8/10 errors from a class and give every student a copy of the errors with 4/5 corrections. The students write the correction to the 4/5 they don't have and check with a partner. The idea is to use metalanguage and analysis to help their partner get the correct answer. My students always appreciate this activity (even if they don't like it).

      Thanks Joanne! Yes, it's a great activity. Maybe I'll explain it visually on a future vlog ;-)

      Oh! This is brilliant! Did you have the time to make the new video about this activity?

    This is a great video. I teach IELTS preparation which weights fluency/coherence, pronounciation, lexical resource and grammar. So I use two methods. If it’s a short answer, I’ll wait until the end of a sentence and stop the student, then repeat with the error and maybe use a rising intonation and/or hand signal when I say the incorrect word. I try to get the sutdent to self-correct.
    However, If it’s the long form answer (2 minute monologue), I’ll make notes and use the same method as I mentioned at the end. If they don’t know their error, I’ll see if the class knows. If not, I’ll give the answer and have the student repeat the corrected sentence.
    If the student makes no grammar errors, I’ll suggest some advanced grammar or advanced vocabulary.

    Finding this now. Great tips! I especially like the color card idea and using a notebook to give students notes at the end of class. Thank you!

    thanks a lot for ideas in correction. I liked very much using the colors so as to find out more what my students want.

      You're welcome Marilen. Some students want to work on fluency which is great and frees you up to focus on the ones who want their errors corrected. It's a win-win-win!

      Hi Salah. Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I do. I have many ideas for correcting written work! First, not all errors should be treated in the same way. Secondly, make sure to say something positive about the student's work. Finally, suggest what the student should to improve their work. I've got some handouts on error correction which I can send you if you like. Best wishes!

    Why do you think errors are important in EFL context?

    • @charmingmanuk66
      @charmingmanuk66 5 лет назад

      Thanks for the question. I think if you never corrected a student you would end up with a very fluent but inaccurate speaker. This may be fine but if you ask the student if they want to be corrected I would say 90% of the time they say yes. So it's important that we are meeting the needs of our students. But as I said in the video not all errors should be treated in the same way.

    Came here for error correction in an autoregressive distributed lag model. Left disappointed.
