Matt rocks! Very nice memories! Here in Canada we also got Something New, Beatles '65, Yesterday and Today, etc... and the BEST version of Rubber Soul with "I've Just Seen A Face". It was a shock to learn in the early 80's that Rubber Soul actually started with Drive My Car and THREE Lennon songs were missing from Revolver. Capital Records really messed up the early Beatles for us, but still great memories.

Amazing... We had this "librarian" type of sales lady working at our record store, in the smallish town of Jyväskylä, in central Finland, back in the 1970's (I was born in 1966). She was really good, with a lot of knowledge of music. Yes, she would recommend stuff to us (me and my elder brother). Once she noticed that we have become Beatle freaks, she recommended London Town that had just come out. Later, I remember listening to Back to the Egg at the record store record player, with head phones on. In those days you could listen to records at the store, I think they were three or so record players near the cashier desk, available for the customers, to check out the LP's before buying. Also, at some point, this record store lady gave me and my brother a cool cardboard box, The Beatles written on it, to collect the albums in it!

Matthew, thank you for your commentary. I have very fond memories of Something New as well. There were two main reasons that I became a drummer. One was because my older brother Rick was a drummer and he had a set in the basement, on which I learned how to play. So, he was an early role model/inspiration to me to become a drummer. But, equally as important, Ringo (Richie) Starr was also a HUGE influence on me to become a drummer! And the "Something New" album has the song "Slow Down" on it and, believe me, that song drove me wild when I was a kid (right around 1968-69)! The drumming on that song is so tight and Ringo gets these little solo fills and all of that was like lightning in my veins! Of course, John Lennon's incendiary vocals sent me over the top as well but that was the song that made me want to go down to the basement and rock-out on my brother's kit! Between Something New and Meet The Beatles, I was a total fan who wanted to copy Ringo by becoming a drummer, which I did.

I love all the Beatles albums but the Capital albums will always be #1 to me. I love Something New. I don't care about song content on it. The cover is great and when I bought the album when I was 13 yrs old, I couldn't wait to hear the songs.

I never thought about Capitol Records being diabolical with the release of "Something New". My "A Hard Day's Night" soundtrack LP was from post-1979, so it was on Capitol. Even still, I did know that it was originally on United Artists. I wonder why United Artists didn't secure exclusivity on the album's 8 songs? I guess we'll read about this in Bruce Spizer's upcoming "A Hard Day's Night" era book. I also agree that "Something New" is a little weak.

So sorry for your recent loss but you have memories like this which make it so much more wonderful that you had him in your life. Something New is a fine album and I actually prefer the mono version with the unique U.S. mixes. You are correct in that this album only made it to #2 for 9 weeks but it was kept from being #1 by A Hard Day’s Night which was #1 for 11 weeks so once again the Beatles were competing with themselves! First of all, if I didn't say it before, I offer you my deepest condolences on the passing of your father. Thanks for sharing the fond memories of him, and why Something New means so much to you. I definitely can understand the connection on many levels.
    Now......... for the album itself...........
When I first heard the album when I was eight , I was a little disappointed at hearing the first track, since I already had the original (U.S.) Hard Days Night soundtrack on United Artist, and couldn't understand at the time why the same song would appear on two albums. (I also didn't understand the concept of "Greatest Hits" compilations yet, either) but, my ears perked up at Things We Said Today since that was my first time hearing that. Yes, I understand why people might think the album is weak, or "Mid" but, as stated, this is an album that will mean something personal to each individual who has a copy for their own personal reasons. Now, as far as Beatles albums go, I'm in the frame of mind that The Beatles NEVER released a bad album, even though there are certain albums I'll gravitate towards more than others. When I first heard it I LOVED the German version of I Want To Hold Your Hand, as that was one of my favorite song by The Beatles when I first discovered them, so it was great to hear it sung in a different language. (I didn't know their full history yet, but just reacted o the music) My two favorite songs off of Something New for all time will always be Anytime At all, because I love John and Paul's call and respond vocals on the chorus, and Matchbox, because, well, it's RINGO! Ringo and George have, through out my life been tied at number one. So thse are my thoughts, and thanks for sharing yours. Hope you have a good weekend.🙂

    Matt,
So my father who I lost two years ago this coming week, had an AKAI X-150D reel to reel deck and he had an "audiotape" brand that was a 2400 ft. tape that had all Beatles Capitol albums recorded on it running at 3/34 ips speed. And Something New was on it. So I totally understand the sentimental memories completely.
I will say I'm sorry for your loss.
