Getting my First Bees! I've Become a Beekeeper!

  • So last Monday was a really random day, started with a knock at the door with a friend from the village wearing her bee suit asking if I wanted some bees!
The rest of the video follows on from there!
I have since learnt I probably shouldn't have fed them that night, but waited a couple of nights so they have used up whatever honey they have in their gut so they don't put it back in store and transfer any diseases. With the two swarms I've caught since I've fed them a few days later.
Unfortunately this swarm decided not to stay, maybe it was too close to where they came from (it's only about 300 yards). But it was a great learning experience. Since then things have developed even further! But I'll leave that for another video!

She was great fun, it was such an exciting and fast paces day. We didn't end up eating until 3, but both really enjoyed ourselves.

Nicely done. Enjoy your bees and be ready for the inevitable expansion as one hive becomes two and so on …..

Ah thank you. These hives are pretty cheap, search thornes bees on a budget.

Thank you! It's not really big enough because I work from it full time, but it is my most favourite place in the world I think!

I found wearing a baseball cap under the keeping cap kept the cap from flopping around my face and also kept the netting from sitting on my face/ears and kept those stingers from those spots.

I normally do when I go to classes, it was one of those days where everything was a bit rushed. When I caught a swarm last week I had to borrow my daughters hat as I was up a tree getting them down and it kept pushing against me.

That's a new way of transferring a swarm. I've never done it that way before. Make sure you tell your doctor you now keep bees. You can suddenly be deathly allergic to the stings. My neighbor wasn't allergic, until he was, and almost died in his yard = trying to get a mobile signal and ended up on a helicopter to the nearest trauma center. Not trying to scare, just aware. Have fun with your new buzzy family! (no longer keep bees here, they just cannot handle the length of our winters here well) Typically loose 1/3-1/2 of hives each year.

I'm afraid with our NHS at the moment emergency care is pretty wanting. Hopefully with a change in government next week we should see some improvements.
How do you get your swarms out? I've been shown shaking straight into the hive as well.

    • @WthrLdy

@@englishhomestead Right into the hive, and slap the lid on .

@WthrLdy ah! This way is a bit less stress and apparently tricks them a little into thinking they chose it.
