      I am not sure you realize that once a company reaches certain size, and your data requirements cross certain border, you start looking into Business and Enterprise grade of things. $300 Synology NASes with WD Reds and free OneDrive is going to get you only so far. I am sure they looked into much more robust storage solutions (think: SAN), but quickly backed off after seeing the price not only for hardware but specially maintenance fees. There are also certain laws about data retention (depending on country, 10 years where I live) and personal data security that companies needs to obey.
      Linus clearly stated he needed a server license for storage replication software. Besides, you can get 180 days for evaluation on Standard edition.

    Windows Server:
    * Costs anywhere from $500 to $6000
    * _NSAKEY (among other giant fucking security holes)
    * Wastes CPU and memory on an ugly-ass GUI
    * POSIX support only available from a third party
    * Development tools sold separately (for another $1200)
    *nix Server:
    * Free software
    * No backdoors
    * GUI is disabled by default, but can be used if desirable
    * Native support for POSIX
    * GCC or Clang usually in base install

      I always laugh when people with no background in IT or software development say "Linux/BSD doesn't have so it's bad." As if somehow, decomposing a utility into component parts, rather than just letting it be one giant, monolithic blob of feature creep, is a bad thing. Though usually it's script kiddies whining about GCC not having a built-in IDE. God forbid you sully your hands with a command line.
      In any case, you can go ahead and tell that to Google, IBM, Oracle, Red Hat, Canonical, 66.5% of all computers acting as web servers, and 99.6% of the TOP500. Go on, I'll wait.

    • @DJstarrfish

      How am I shifting goalposts? If anything, you pulled an ad-hoc rescue of "muh' corporate space," which means literally nothing because most of the Web is technically "corporate space," and I gave you the names of corporations which don't run any Windows servers internally. Then again, maybe if you didn't outright ignore valid data and evidence against you, you'd realize that.
      Though in hindsight, I really shouldn't have even wasted my breath to begin with. You have an anime avatar on RUclips. If statistics mean anything, then you're probably some morbidly obese 20-something-year-old moron who failed community college and lives with your mom. Have fun with your castrated version of 389, bro.

    • @Icenovae
      @Icenovae 7 лет назад +6

      You're shifting goal posts by using only web servers to demonstrate % usage. Not all servers are webservers.
      RedHat also is paid for so saying that's a downside of only Windows is wrong.
      *nix OSes have their own share of security issues.
      Windows Server doesn't require a GUI either.
      POSIX isn't necessarily a requirement.
      Neither is GCC or Clang and is honestly a very specific need.
      Windows and *nix each have their own uses.

      Grek Aka Drizzle Windows 10's GUI is horrible. The OS itself is very unstable, and it just randomly crashes while using it. it's not my computers fault, this is a 900$pc with 8gb of ram, a core i5, and a Nvidia 940m GPU. i have 4 other computers with windows 7, and never have i experienced one of them freezing and bsod'ing me. they are maybe slow, and take a long time powering on, but that's just because of the old hardware.
      Windows 10 just has a cheap feel to it, like unlocking the computer in sleep mode:
      it shows the background for a split second, then shows the colour i picked for windows (dark red) for a split second, then freezes, and then makes a "nice" password animation. if the animations worked like in windows 7, it would be fine. but they don't 2/3 of the time. the first year of using it, i couldn't even open the start menu. it just did nothing! id press it, and it'd show the hovering over and clicking animation, but nothing would happen. the pinned icons weren't there, just animations, but without the icon itself.
      they haven't gotten any better since windows 7. maybe new, but not better. it's not the same thing.

      @Windows Explorer // Exploring Windows Linux server has a totally diffrent market than Windows server?

    • @SkyyySi
      @SkyyySi 4 года назад +6

      @Windows Explorer // Exploring Windows Wrong. This is simply wrong. First up, a non-pro probably wont spent over 1000$ on an operating system. It is also wrong that windows is easyer. Linux can install apps with 1-3 clicks and the method is (almost) always exactly the same. Linux doesn't annoy you with updates. Linux doesn't need an antivirus. Linux is more stable. Linux is faster. Linux doesn't spam random popups at you. Linux doesn't tell you wat you can and (more importantly) cannot do with your system. Linux' install process is easyer. Linux doesn't have a thousand different interface styles, but only about 5, and in most cases, the other ones will auto-adapt to look and feel almost the same. Linux doesn't force you to pay for a license. Deploying Linux on a server is easyer, too. Now to be fair, most of these things only apply to some distros like Ubuntu. But have you ever even used Linux in like, the last 5 years or so and have you actually tried to not force yourself to think that Windows is better? The only 2 arguments that can be made in favor of Windows is 1. since it is installed by default on almost every new pc, it has a massive userbase with lots of support (but then again, since Linux is fully open, it's more often than not gonna be much easyer to get community support for technical issues) and 2. it has a higher software support. However, Linux is, thanks to things like "Wine" and Valve's gaming optimized "one-click" fork "Proton", that gap is starting to close, and at an increasing paste. But yeah, if you want to use edge and the most bloated office suit on the planet where you are not gonna use any of the " exclusive features", then I aggre, Windows is easyer. Otherwise... no, no it's not.

    Linus hey I wanted to address the lowered benchmarks in Windows server settings. In Windows server the application priority is set to background services. Therefore your benchmark doesn't get priority when doing anything that's foreground. The server set up so that it can manage the network and clients in the background, especially for AD DC, DNS and DHCP calls. So you might try re-running the benchmark in a different video with the applications process priority set to foreground applications instead of background and system services.

      You're still in the PC mindset. The performance of single server doesn't matter, because you can add more servers. A server edition of anything is (or should be) optimised to run on cheap, energy efficient hardware, and not to squeeze performance out of fancy hardware. The OS itself should be optimised for throughput of independent tasks and not for response times and tight loops of sequential tasks, which is what the common benchmarks are about. Linus' method of putting the best hardware he can find and running benchmarks misses the point 100%.

    • @PhoenixWrong_
      @PhoenixWrong_ 7 лет назад

      Sidney Turner Yo a degree but won't be mind blowing. Servers need to be efficency in energy consumption so that many servers can run in a farm. That room can get toasty and electricity gets sucked up like a hoover vacumn as you cool the everything.

      It's pretty straight forward to do a data backup on a broken Windows installation.

    Another config difference that you didn't note (or I missed it) is that by default Windows Server prioritizes background tasks by default, Home/Pro versions prioritize foreground tasks- This is likely why the results are slightly lower for the server tests. It is in Advanced System Settings.

    this setup linus, is very amazing
    i can recall in similarity when lon had made a pc on a board, much similar to ur setup
    but the difference here is, i think that both pretty much are pretty nice
    and despite all of the bad comments u had from people involving this video, i am one of the people, who actually like this setup, for several positive reasons:
    1. if u are making your own pc and taking in to careful consideration how it manages , but the good news is, if its pre built, then there would be that extra level of protection so no parts get damaged due to wear and tear
    2. gaming, out of curiousity, i think that theres some good in how u manage a create ur own pc with gaming,
    so that they can play video games
    3. servers. i have to agree with u about what u said about performance , but it depends on what pc its on, if a create ur own pc is on a very super fast pc like a really big desktop, then there shouldn't be a problem in perfromance, generally because of the fact that they are much easier than mini pc's
    4. media centers , as i mentioned in the previous comment during the wan show, which is about Plex and other media centers,
    if a create your own pc is optimized for running media servers for movies, tv shows, and even music, such as programs like plex and kodi, then the Massive amounts of movies and tv that goes into a media center would be easy to go into it
    and you would get the most out of it

    You don't buy a windows server OS to use as your personal computer. You buy a server OS because you have a domain for your company and you want to integrate with Azure in the Cloud or just want more features to manage your domain.
    Server's are not designed to run games or high graphics, its not optimized for that. They are optimized for handing network activity and managing domains, active directory, exchange server, hyper v, or other roles for your server.
    Even if you have the extra money for the server OS for your gaming computer or personal computer, you should invest that money into better hardware instead of the server OS.

    It would be interesting to see if there was a difference on lower end hardware. The performance would be lesser for both but it would still be accurate (the bottlenecks Linus mentioned are not an issue if they exist on both PCs). I'm just curious if W Server might have better resource utilization when pushed on not so capable hardware. It would kinda make sense as servers are built to withstand extreme use but also with as few costly components as possible.

    if you're comparing Windows Server, why is 8 cores "balls to the walls"? surely any benefits would be in multi-cpu, high thread count operation. or for the purpose of a single video was a workstation dual Xeon test bench too expensive?
    and why was there a drop across the games? Dx12? would have liked to see this covered...

    • @Austin1990
      @Austin1990 7 лет назад +9

      Yeah, I was thinking that. A drop in game performance is interesting. So, perhaps Windows 10 would see less performance in certain server applications. You can't compare a server OS to a consumer OS without running practical server workloads.

    It's very simple to explain. The tested system running under the server version of Windows made a bit lower scores in benchmarks, because Windows Server runs more heavy backround tasks, some services and servers roles like Active Directory, Server Manager, File and Storage Services and has more built-in drivers for some specific RAID-configurations, multi-proccessor systems, claters and etc... All of these is an additional cpu load. So it's necessary to turn them off on Server edition. And you will get more performance running Windows Server under multi-proccessor system or clusters doing some highly multi-threaded work than on a desktop edition.

    For software the installation lockout is done by scanning the registry for a key. Client versions use WinNT
    Server uses NT server.

    Windows Server is set by default to prioritize background services over running apps. You should try the benchmarks after switching this in System Properties>Advanced>Advanced>Adjust Best Performance For (Set this to Apps). Also, WiFi support in Server needs to be enabled from the Server Control Panel, or using Powershell. I've set up quite a number of Servers for companies

    its logical that the preforment is lower, win server is using more resorser to operate and does slowing down the pc

      Phrase comes from steam engines, where a rotating device with balls on the ends of arms as weights was used to release excess steam pressure from the system. When it was spinning so fast the arms were all the way out (to the walls!) was because the fire was very hot, and the engine was working as hard as it could.

    Linus...have you found boot time differences? I just compared (for a project I'm working on) 2019 server essential vs enterprise 2019 ltsc (1809). I found no relevant differences in performance while using 90% of the programs, but cold boot time was really different: server 2019:14.2 sec; ltsc 24.5 sec; resume from hibernate in 2019 server: 12.8 sec; w10 ltsc 16.6 seconds (average times, same driver revision). MSI Z390M, i5 9600k, M2 Samsung 970 1TB; I know the comparison is highly influenced by hw and sw, and I'm not going to spend 1k in licensing for a few seconds at boot, but it was a major difference. I really appreciate the channel and I'm a long time viewer...keep up your great work!

    That drivers work on multiple versions of Windows is because of backwards compatibility driver models the newer version come with. Windows 7 has 2 driver models for example, Vista's and its own. Even though the kernel is not very similar. Kernel version numbering stopped meaning anything at that time. The actual version is in the product name.

    Linus, what if you use windows server 16's hypervision to provision multiple windows 10 VM instances with access to the same GPU? Could you in theory split a super gaming rig across 4 older rigs and just use the resources of one machine, like for instance could you throw a full league of legends match off one GPU by using VM instances of windows 10 from a rig like the one you have built here running a server program, kind of like cloud gaming?
