An infected valve is a serious situation. If caught early, it is possible for antibiotic therapy alone to cure the problem, but in many cases, the valve is damaged beyond repair, and must be surgically replaced by either a tissue or mechanical valve. Infected valves may grow “vegetations”. These are clumps of bacteria and inflammatory debris that adhere to the surface of the valve. Portions of vegetation’s may break free, flowing up into arteries of the brain, causing obstruction to blood flow, and possibly causing a stroke. You can see more about endocarditis (valve infection) in the Neurology Library at www.CalShipleyMD.com
Hi doctor how to find out mitral valve prolapse is mild or not in my report it has mitral valve prolapse- aml and in color flowing mapping section it has mitral reguration -trivial can you help
If mitral regurgitation happening because of mvp then they will note in your report otherwise it won't. Mild or trivial mitral regurgitation without mvp no need to worry at all I think.
I can hear my heart all the time I feel a weird feeling in my chest but no pain . I do feel tired at times and when I move my heart rate goes up. I'm 18 in college :( help I can't even sleep at night because I can hear it. All my pulses are very strong .
@@genesisbunaventura8308 I'm from Brazil. First I went to a cardiologist due to episodes of tachycardia, palpitations and chest pain. ECG normal but when i did the echocardiogram, the diagnosis was there: MITRAL VALVE PROLAPSE (thickened anterior leaflet) and mild mitral regurgitation. I took propranolol and magnesium for a few months and I currently have no symptoms, except a very rare and fast stabbing pain in the chest, which disappear in seconds.
Can Mitral Valve Prolapse diagnosed in my 20's, cure itself by my 40's and then come back at age 61? The prolapse was diagnosed by echo when I was 26, but at 45 there was no sign of it on the echo. The other day, my doctor heard the heart murmur on through the stethoscope and want's me to get an another echo. How is this possible that it could come back after curing itself.
hi Giffy - your situation is theoretically possible for a couple of reasons. First, a mild prolapse can come and go over the years, depending on factors such as weight change and general level of fitness Second, echoes are not 100% sensitive for detecting valvular abnormalities, especially relatively minor ones like MVP. It's possible that the echo at 45 missed it. I would definitely follow your doctor's advice and get the follow up echo, especially if he's hearing a murmur. Better safe than sorry. Good luck with it! Cjs
Most cases of MVP are relatively minor and inconsequential clinically during the life of the patient, however, a small percentage of cases will progress to mitral regurgitation, and ultimate failure of the valve, requiring urgent or emergent valve replacement. Https://www.CalShipleyMD
I thought the same thing until I came across study guide by the School of Cardiac Ultrasound -Arizona Heart Institute Foundation, Feigenbaum H. Echocardiography, referencing - the America Society of Echocardiography. And it says: - "Secondary causes of mitral valve prolapse include all the following EXCEPT: A. atrial septal defect. B. bicuspid valve. C. cardiac tamponade. D. Primary pulmonary hypertension. And the correct answer listed is B with the following text: "a disease process that increases right ventricular dimension will decrease the left ventricular dimension, thus causing the mitral valve to prolapse into the left atrium during systole. Relief of the primary causes of right ventricular dilation usually resolves the mitral valve prolapse"
I think maybe they think that in some cases tamponade can reduce the size of the left ventricle by exerting pressure and decreasing the size of the annulus. Hence the MVP. But I could be wrong.
+vanderley3 - prolapse involves the valve leaflets pushing up into the left atrium during systole. Provided the leaflets stay in contact with each other (coapted ), regurgitation will not occur...
regurgitation = Reverse flow of blood, Prolapse= abnormal valve Leaflets pushing into atrium... when you have severe weak chordae tendinae(maybe during Rheumatic Fever) , leads to strong prolapse leading to abnormal flow of blood through the valve(regurgitation) ..hope this helps
Hello Doctor, does the mitral annulus contract/expand during either systole or diastole? Or is it rigid? And where can I find information about this? Thank you, Alex
I challenge all doctors to investigate based on my personal experience about mitral valve prolapse. My heart is very sensitive to radiation especially computer and lcd tv even if is already turn off. I will stay 9 meters away from it.

Is it dangerous ??
Most cases of MVP are relatively minor and inconsequential clinically during the life of the patient, however, a small percentage of cases will progress to mitral regurgitation, and ultimate failure of the valve, requiring urgent or emergent valve replacement. Https://www.CalShipleyMD
How can cardiac tamponade be the secondary cause of mitral valve prolapse?
+John Doe - hello John - I know of no relationship between MVP and tamponade
John Doe duhhhhh.. you get enough pressure on the area to stress the fibers that hold the valve down.
most MVPs are mild, and require little worry or attention throughout a lifetime. Hopefully you will be in that category...
I don't understand how Mitral Valve Prolapse can occur WITHOUT regurgitation.
+vanderley3 - prolapse involves the valve leaflets pushing up into the left atrium during systole. Provided the leaflets stay in contact with each other (coapted ), regurgitation will not occur...
regurgitation = Reverse flow of blood, Prolapse= abnormal valve Leaflets pushing into atrium... when you have severe weak chordae tendinae(maybe during Rheumatic Fever) , leads to strong prolapse leading to abnormal flow of blood through the valve(regurgitation) ..hope this helps

nice
I have had mitral valve prolapse since kindergarden
hello how are you doing?how is your mitral valve now
Warning : For those who have it stay away from cellphone, computer, laptop and lcd tv. Your heart cannot sustained the high level of radiation
Radiation is not known to affect people with mitral valve disease
i was diagnosed to have this as well.. though mine it just mild.. but both of the anterior and posterior valves are thickened.
I had 2D echocardiogram.
the cardoilogist told me that this is congenital.
welcome
I was just diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse following a stress ultrasound(echo). I am a 37yo male.
How are you doing now?
Hello Doctor, does the mitral annulus contract/expand during either systole or diastole? Or is it rigid? And where can I find information about this?
Thank you,
Alex
I hate when it beats, doesnt beat ACK
Wow
Thanks Ruru - here is a related video from my library trialimage.com/cardiac-cycle-video/
my father valve problem
I challenge all doctors to investigate based on my personal experience about mitral valve prolapse. My heart is very sensitive to radiation especially computer and lcd tv
even if is already turn off. I will stay 9 meters away from it.
