Yeah i did but it was actually never necessary for this size of books. For the aot ones where i went with this method i do sand them and it sticks perfectly!
i usually have an idea before i start rebinding a manga or i ask in the community what they would like to see or what they think could look cool. But im also not satisfied with all my rebinds to be fair. especially my first binds were more like get to know the craft now i dedicate more time for the designs. if not the most time.

Have you considered sanding the laminated cover bits to make the glue stick better?

I have a question doesn't it affect the opening of book like when you open a hardback book/manga it opens differently than a paperback.

Yeah it does affect it but in a positive way. I dont have to worry the spine to break anymore when opening and reading the manga.
