The absolute lack of actual arguments of the crypto shills in this comment section is nearly as amazing as your talk. That sentence at 12:04 was an incredible piece of context that made me love your speech even more. Thank you for your work.
The only thing that blockchain has really solved is the problem that Bitcoin solved with double spend on an internet native currency through a distributed ledger. Other applications of blockchain(including web3) are extremely inefficient and expensive. I don’t see the world continuing to move this direction. Crypto bros and shillcoiners have also made sure that the entire “space” has left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. If anything, opensource has been solving this problem(data protection/privacy) on its own for years, but it takes time for people outside of developers to understand that opportunity.
The thing is that it solved the double-spend problem *by* being extremely inefficient and expensive. The only thing that stops you doing a 51% attack on Bitcoin is the fact that you need a medium-sized country's entire electricity supply to do it.
Appreciate the bold analysis.. Ty.. I thought all hope for evaluating so called web 3, aka, next level sameness via capitalism, was going to be hidden under they hype. Intuitive and helpful.
“When you build the ship you build the shipwreck” Paul Virilio’s quote is just such a great quote, not so much as an anti-tech statement but a lack of ethics and decision intelligence statement.
The web is broken because it is a reflection of society, and society is broken. This isn't new, it has always been broken. Do we fix the web in the hopes that it fixes society? Or do we need to fix society in order to fix the web? Take your pick I guess. Either way, the web was much better when it was just us nerds.
I bought NFT and are with nothing. There is an education DAO that I bought into and see nothing happened. Now they are into AI and taking people in that direction.
i like her website: web3isgoinggreat .... the sheer amount of BS, she was able to collect so far is insane and hilarious, if it would not be so sad ...
Really enjoyed this summary of Web3/Crypto. As soon as I learned that web3 was simply a new web but "integrated" with crypto, all bets were off on this being "the future" (at least my future). I'm also kind of concerned about this new addiction to A.I. with these big tech companies who are already gobbling up the world of personal data. Hopefully, it's web 3.0 and not web3 that we finally get, in any case.
If you do not have even one example for a non web3 scam. I hope this will end soon. If they woould only scam each other ist would be ok for me but they are destroying also the lives of others
Eh, there's always room for improvement; for example, the delivery. But that's a small nitpick-I'd rather have her on stage than a smooth talker like, say, Elizabeth Holmes. I make no mistake of glossing over how scathing this takedown is of crypto bros and vulture capitalists, or how hopeful it is for a better web, one that discards the outrageous mistakes of the previous iteration and builds one with the benefits to many first in mind. This speech will always be memorable to me and will keep coming back to it, will be reminded of it whenever one more crypto venture gets uncovered as yet another scam.
It’s stupid and unnecessary. The whole thing is clickbait. Swearing in the title for your “shock value”, girl in the thumbnail for simps. Then her talk was unorganized and not well thought out. Got part way through and realized she’s just using herself as “smart eye candy”.
web1 = static html (think plain html document from netscape days) , web2 = dynamic html and front end (think hotmail, html no longer a static file), web3 = web2 + wallets (think uniswap, login with a wallet that can then perform trades, makes loans, or just receive a loyalty token).
The point is that MIT didn't have a wikipedia citation policy back when Oxman was submitting her dissertation. I'm not as familiar with wiki as you are, but as far as I recall people used it as dictionaries-- like Oxman did. There is material difference between Claudia Gay's plagarism (of ideas) and Oxman's "plagarism" of word definitions. I respect your point of view but it is fair to expect non-wiki insiders (who treat it as dictionaries and with no explicit guidance from the university) to cite the dictionary-like wiki ?
It's now annoying how everyone in these past few year's when talking about tech they bring up crypto or tech they wanna sell in. What happened to the community? Everyone's so freaking money hungry now & willing to sell their souls for cash or something? I've always been a big time tech guy & a gamer too, always will...it's just frustrating seeing all this fake people now,it's honestly kinda sad.☹️ I can still remember when hot and played the first Sony PlayStation, back then they gave out free game demo cds. Those first PS1 cds were black in color & held only about 200-500 mb's memory each! Them were the good old days! You played @ home, 6-10 games per cd & each game had 25-35 mins of gameplay. That mad it easy and fun when deciding what game you'd want to buy. 👾🕹
I saw you talking about SBF. I had the same idea you have - it's all a scam. I'm an SW dev and now have a 20-employee business. All bootstrap - no pitchdeck . good job
@@codenameirvin1590 obvious my a$$. Only the needs of great war (10 years later) gave some serious applications of cars, planes and endothermic engines. Until then cars were expensive toys.
The logical argument is: “look at what a dumpster fire Web3 is.” The proof is in the pudding so to speak. I have yet to see a real-world problem that has been solved by an application of blockchain.
Lmao you know how much she has researched this subject and participated in conversations about it? You're a crypto bro living a pipe dream, grow up and actually hear the other side of the argument and her points nad you'll quickly realize how fucking dumb the current hype of crypto and web3 actually is.
Well none of the cases about web3 those are specific crypto projects that not using smart contracts or have loophole in their contracts itself, face it if you want to blame tech by using people or orgs that miss handle the tech itself you sound more like doom-sayer rather than EA
From her speech, I noticed that she is very skeptical about the future of Web3. This shows speaking about something with out deep research, including the technical aspects.
Or maybe public speaking is stressful no matter what and some people are more intimidated and show it more than others in such circumstances. Your comment says way more about yourself than about her.
great talk but i disagree with "but it's unlikely that we would we will be fighting for revolution along the seam alongside the same Venture capitalists and tech companies who helped to get us into this mess in the first place". Those venture capitalists & companies always put their hands on everything, every new technology. And, there's nothing we can do to force them not doing so. Hate the game, not the player. If you're so anti-VC or anti big tech, then you're just being exclusive, which is ironically a trait of capitalists as well.

Thank you for your service. Apparently nothing has changed in web 3 since this speech. Eye opening.
The elusive exception to Betteridge's Law of Headlines!
This was the best talk at Web Summit. So insightful, cutting through all of the crap. Well done Molly.

No offense, this speech just terribly lacks logical arguments.
