I am relying on you and Patrick Boyle for solid, reliable, longer-form videos presenting important content on evolving financial issues. The improved production of this video is not only interesting but helps to sustain attention for the whole imporant message. Thanks Molly!
The problem I do have with Patrick Boyle is that he copies and uses sources without any attribution. It's not just ripping off with him (though there is that, too), but also literally copying. There was a reddit thread about him following the plagiarism hullaballoo, and it is... not good. I had suspicions before, because of the breadth and tempo of his output, and they were largely confirmed by what people found
"This is my first long form video..." then let me just say it doesn't show in the slightest. The video was very engaging the whole way through, and the few times I paused it I spent it looking for articles related to the subject you were covering at the moment. Your research was throughout, and your thoughts are very well organized. Now this might vary from person to person, but I liked that you put in a lot of personality into the video. Overall, very well done!
This is really really great! Incredibly information packed. I might suggest adding chapter timestamps to future videos, though, just to make bouncing around such a long video a little bit easier. But otherwise, bravo!
This is great, Molly. This should be a "crypto happy hour" once a week on all major financial news channels! The one thing I felt was left unclear was why CZ agreed to this. He was in a nonextradition country. My best thought is similar to your thoughts, which is that this would stop a legal avalanche. I also hadn't noted the difference of him being the owner still, even if he isn't an officer, so this could remain a cash flow stream for him, even if he isn't involved in decision making. Also, like you said, if he traded it for freedom of movement - but the firm is in a strait-jacket now, and it seems like a bit risk of whether it will be able to keep up with the rest of the crypto space. We'll see!
I do have a small suggestion/request. It involves some more work, sorry. I like when you split-screen to show a protagonist, this is good placement for *some* diagrams as well. Simple diagrams give a visual context when explaining processes and effects, for example, wash trading. It helps people at the "I *think* I get it" level, and diagrams illustrating the spoken words demonstrate consistency, a foundation of trust. On this point, my own rule of thumb: unless for a special/comical effect, no informational image or diagram should be shown for less than 2 secs. For example, the final diagrams from the sequence starting at 5:50 went by a *little* fast. Pacing and cadence are further signals of consistency, and you already have/use these in your writing and narration. You can extend these habits into the visual composition, offering relevant visual treats periodically/regularly across a full length presentation. But this is a *tool* not a *requirement*. Solo production is hard; big respect. This is a strong presentation! Thank you for it.
Regarding feedback for editing. I only listened to the video, so the sound is the only part that I can talk about. There were long stretches (maybe 2 to 4 seconds) of silence, probably when you cut from one shot to a different one. If there were title cards at that moment, a couple of tunes would make it obvious to the listener. But to be honest, I'm just writing this because you asked for feedback, it feels nitpicky (?) to write that about such an informative and interesting video.
Great article Molly! I knew all of the facts but you present it so well. Love your writing and these vids and your recent stance on Substack stupidity. I’m going to pump up my subscription to give you a little bit more help. Stay light, humorous and of course wickedly sharp. What appeals to me most is that I know you absolutely enjoy this 😂 I’m actually a crypto enthusiast (from a software rather than finance background) but only in very select projects and definitely not into the usual garbage. I’d like to see your evaluation of better decentralised finance platforms other than those that form the bulk of your grift counter total 🤷♂️ You never know, you might see a different angle. Keep it up Molly!
Holy Smokes what a deep dive into Binance. I've been following you for the past 6 months or so trying to figure out this whole crypto non-sense and this video was so good. Thank you for all the information and it is written for the masses to understand that strange world. Video was very good, lighting and audio was excellent.
CZ sounds like the kind of person who will just cut his losses with Binance, go overseas again, and start something else just like it that isn't under US regulation. It seems clear to me that he was fully aware that he was profiting from the facilitation of criminal enterprise and had not qualms about it. Even if he goes to prison he will just get out again and do it all over. That is, unless the US government has a leash on him because they have evidence that he did far worse things and he has to cooperate in catching criminals that used Binance or he's going to be prosecuted for something that puts him away for much more time than he will likely serve for this.
05:32 We need @EmperorTigerstar to rate this map for his Horrible Maps video series (not that it's particularly horrible). The implication is that the lighter colors represent Asia - but it seems to include the European part of Turkey and exclude the Asian part of Russia. Also, shouldn't Antarctica wrap all the way around the bottom of the map in the Mercator projection?
I think it's interesting that the DOJ wouldn't want to put Binance out of business. The agreement is like if the US tried to "clean up" the Silk Road, and said they could keep operating as long as they no longer allowed sales of illegal drugs, reported illegal activity, and collected sales tax. Like, sure, but isn't that the whole point of the service existing?
This essay was amazing in so many ways! Great pacing, great choices on the level of detail without overstaying on any single point, incredible delivery. The one off thing for me was that the highlighter sound was very nails-on-chalkboard to me? Literally the only thing that knocked me out of it, I couldn't believe that this is your first long-form video you'd produced, this is polished as hell
Thanks for this explainer, Molly. I've been following your social media accounts for a minute now, so I'd picked up bits and pieces of the story, but having it all laid out in a single source was extremely helpful.
"sick ass volumes" @ 27:58 lmao great work, molly. what did you use to edit this video? edit: just finished - this is some fantastic stuff. you clearly put a ton of effort into this script and the video, and it shows: the output is a cohesive, comprehensive, easily-digestible video that helped me understand something i didn't understand before. some additional feedback (since you asked for it at the end of the video!! cool): - i noticed a few spots in the video where the screen was black for one frame. i'm not sure what editing software you use, but some of them can automatically delete detected blank spots in your timeline. - great choice of backdrop, lighting, and framing. you crushed presentation. - i liked so many of the editing choices you made with respect to cuts, on-screen quotes, and other effects. they were really effective! - if your camera shoots in 4k, and your hardware/internet is happy with editing/uploading 4k footage, i think the additional resolution and bitrate assigned to 4k videos on youtube would benefit audio and video quality. i look forward to more long-form videos like this!
Ack, I thought I caught all the black frames, but some must've slipped through. I'm not sure how they got there in the first place, honestly. I'm using DaVinci Resolve for editing. My camera does do 4k, I might give that a try for the next go-round! Really appreciate the feedback, Zach.
Could we have a long form video about Tether, please? I just can't understand what the hell is going on over there, because they seem to be more shoddy and criminal than FTX+Binance combined, yet they are plowing ahead with seemingly no oversight, or slap on the hand, or anything.
@@lindap.5120 I guess the problem comes in where you can change one dollar for one tether and everyone just assumes it goes the other way around too but it doesn't. The minimum redemption amount is 100k and there's no proof that there ever was a successful redemption. It's fine while the line keeps going up but what happens if someone want's to get out? FTX couldn't redeem 250 million without being accused of trying to depeging tether and pulling back.
Great video, very well presented. I was really excited to see this pop up on my youtube feed and look forward to seeing more! One very minor critique was that the interview audio clip around 35:54 was really loud compared to your own audio, so the cut to it was pretty jarring and might hurt a little if you have headphones on and the volume sort of high to start with.
Awesome. Really liked the longform video content. Your writing is top-notch and both informative and engaging. I think from a video standpoint, I'll concur with another comment I saw which suggests it might help to have some mixed shots, angles, etc. Maybe even some visuals/diagrams/etc to go along with your points when appropriate. I recognize that can create substantially more work. I think for this type of video essay, I'm mostly listening anyway, so no need to go crazy here. Just thinking of what might make the video component itself a touch more dynamic.
Great video, Molly! As someone who has worked in payments, I've often struggled to explain what all the regulatory agencies are and what they do. I wish I'd had access to your explanations of FinCEN and SAR (suspicious activity reporting) many years ago to help motivate team members who sometimes felt like they were being handed the absolute worst assignment to implement regulatory controls. True, it's not the sexiest work, but it's critically important. Your video makes sense of it and is a good reminder that sometimes, that kind of boring work actually leads to better outcomes for regular citizens who are trying to do legitimate business while keeping bad actors out.
Hi Molly! There’s a good chance you’ll see this, huh. Thanks so much for the video and for all of your efforts in reporting on the tech/crypto space. I hope you have a good day!
Definitely the subject matter warranted an hours treatment. A shorter video would have meant the scope and length of the malfeasance would not be as clear in my mind. Gave me time to think about it without a rapid fire brain dump
I would mostly advise this content to be consumed by investors still having their funds locked on Binance, since for them (unlike for me) this is not merely entertainment.
Love the video and your writing! Had a couple little video production ideas that are very take-it-or-leave-it. Overall you made a great video: * Maybe frame a little bit more to the left for looking room (esp. if using chyrons/OTS in the future) * The synth song at the beginning might work as quiet background * Consider more zoom level variation for even the routine jump-cuts And of course, we're here to get updates on your dog.
Great video Molly! Very informative and you have a really engaging delivery. Editing was so good for both your snarky commentary close ups and also the supplementary documents, quotes, etc. Looking forword to the next video!
Great video! I would have thought a video detailing mutli-billion dollar financial crime case would have been too complicated foe me to parse but you explained it very clearly.
Sort of! My podcast feed contains the audio versions of my newsletters, for people who prefer to listen to them in a podcast app. It's not a podcast in the traditional sense, and doesn't contain any content not published at the newsletter. Thanks so much for your support and kind words!
"Déja vu. Weird." was peak delivery-and really appreciate the deep dive here! Honestly I was surprised how much this went beyond indifference toward regulations into active disdain and circumvention.
Great video explaining "stuff" I don't understand. Also, the SEC's behavior confuses me. Last Wednesday, they APPROVED the trading of spot Bitcoin ETPs, while also being clear that they do not endorse or approve Bitcoin itself? What possible good is there in allowing that? I think that topic would also be a good one to explain.
The SEC can only enforce laws, not create them. From summaries I have seen, there was no *legal* reason the SEC could block them from existing, but in their wording from the statement and subsequent statements from Gensler include very strong wordings of the risks of these investments and the clear message that they do not in any way approve/support the underlying asset of the ETF. At least that's my interpretation. The SEC doesn't like it, but they think ETFs are technically legal.
I can't stop shaking my head in amazement when you read these quotes from their chats. Thanks for taking the time to put it together like this. Makes me wonder for how long crypto is going to be tolerated at all.
He Yi's comment that "a co-founder relationship is about comradeship" is stranger and funnier once you know that (in Mandarin Chinese) "comrade" is slang for "LGBT".
Great job on the Vid....looking forward to more. Would love a video on AI...seems to be a similar "wild west" environment with some of the same or similar "cowboys" as crypto
This is exceptional work. Truly. One question… CZ has, as far as we can tell, sold out to US law enforcement “hundreds of thousands” people who are, to say the least, very powerful and prone to violence. Should we worry that his children might grow up orphans?
Talking to the camera at a precise 30 degree angle for over an hour is serious discipline
She showing off the clean hair cut!

Great job, Molly ! Please do more like this. Outstanding.

This is really really great! Incredibly information packed. I might suggest adding chapter timestamps to future videos, though, just to make bouncing around such a long video a little bit easier. But otherwise, bravo!
Long form video! Let’s go, Molly! Congrats. Great lighting btw.
This is great! Also it will never not be funny that RUclips is running crypto ads against your work.
This is great, Molly. This should be a "crypto happy hour" once a week on all major financial news channels!

Informative, insightful and funny. Excellent work Molly!
I keep laughing unexpectedly. Excellent and thorough work, and well produced!

U.S. Government: Look CZ if you just stop, pay a fine, and do a few months in a minimum security prison will let you keep your Billions of dollars.

Fantastic review of this very weird story. Look forward to more of these long form videos.
Great video! It's kind of hilarious how many crypto ads youtube put on this video

Based on amateur reading of history of spying, the govt probably wants to use some of these crypto houses as honeypots.
Because i imagine important people have their fingers in the pie. Silk road not as much.

Very good video molly! I did the same eye roll at 41:15 🙄 i still like written long form content though
What a great introduction to your channel. Thank you for your great journalism.
Thanks Molly!
Great video! Thanks for all the wonderful work on crypto over the years.
Phenomenal video. Clear, informative and well presented. Looking forward to more !
I'm instantly impressed by the production! :O
I watched the entire thing start to finish. Good job.
Omg, getting a Michael Saylor ad before this video
Super high-quality. Watched your videos on the Sam bankman fried stuff, this is a new level in quality with the same in depth reporting. Great stuff!
Could we have a long form video about Tether, please? I just can't understand what the hell is going on over there, because they seem to be more shoddy and criminal than FTX+Binance combined, yet they are plowing ahead with seemingly no oversight, or slap on the hand, or anything.
Is that because the crypto exchanges need stable coins in order to trade?

Very, very good work. Thank you!
this long video was amazing! Keep it up.
Glad you liked it!
Fantastic job, Molly! A great explanation of the situation with just a few sprinkles of humour. Subscribed and looking forward tto more.
I'm surprised this doesn't have more views it's so well made.
Molly White RUclipsr era! You're probably the most qualified person in the world to do videos like this, so I'm glad that you are
This is wild, thank you so much for this video!
At Binance, KYC apparently means "know your criminals"
Superb video. Great explanations :)
Amazing video Molly, thanks for that!
Great coverage!
This was a beautiful breakdown of how we got here, and similarly I have no idea what's going to happen next.
molly rockin that classic undercut
Great video, very well presented. I was really excited to see this pop up on my youtube feed and look forward to seeing more!

awesome breakdown !
Loving the format and the editing style. I laughed out loud at "bro".
the other dude's surname is actually Bro, Alvin Bro
I am staring at screens like 10 to 12 hours a day so I appreciate the audio longform.
Awesome. Really liked the longform video content. Your writing is top-notch and both informative and engaging. Excellent work! The improved production quality does not go unnoticed. Would love to hear you get into the ETFs. WSJ had a good piece today.

Been a fan of your W3isgreat for a while, really love to see more of this long form journalism from you. Keep up the great work.

looks good! as for improvement ideas I think visible hands would help, see how Dan Olson is framing and using his hands
I would mostly advise this content to be consumed by investors still having their funds locked on Binance, since for them (unlike for me) this is not merely entertainment.
Amazing level of criminality. I worked in technology in banking/finance for 25 years, so I shouldn't be surprised, but...
Excellent job. Honestly. You deserve a million subscribers.
Excellent, well-researched video.
Sub'd! Wait that site is yours!??! Very cool.
Not sure which site you mean, but citationneeded.news and web3isgoinggreat.com are both mine! Thanks for the sub!
I am totally using that line, "Why do you feel so entitled to those answers?"And yes, I'd like fries."
Phenomenal job presenting a lot of dense information in an entertaining way. Hard to believe this is your first long form. You are a natural pro.
Love the video and your writing!
Had a couple little video production ideas that are very take-it-or-leave-it. Overall you made a great video:
* Maybe frame a little bit more to the left for looking room (esp. if using chyrons/OTS in the future)
* The synth song at the beginning might work as quiet background
* Consider more zoom level variation for even the routine jump-cuts
And of course, we're here to get updates on your dog.
Thanks so much for the feedback!
Great video Molly! Very informative and you have a really engaging delivery. Editing was so good for both your snarky commentary close ups and also the supplementary documents, quotes, etc. Looking forword to the next video!
This is awesome!
Great video! I would have thought a video detailing mutli-billion dollar financial crime case would have been too complicated foe me to parse but you explained it very clearly.
Hey molly, we have the same haircut!
Just found out you got a podcast, nice! And supported you on citation needed, thanks for doing this work. We need rational voices in crypto.
Sort of! My podcast feed contains the audio versions of my newsletters, for people who prefer to listen to them in a podcast app. It's not a podcast in the traditional sense, and doesn't contain any content not published at the newsletter.

SEC lost the case to Grey scale
LOLing at the ad by Michael Saylor on this, as if Molly's audience is looking for advice on Moon-related Lambo acquisition
Keep it up! 😃
I can't stop shaking my head in amazement when you read these quotes from their chats. Thanks for taking the time to put it together like this. Makes me wonder for how long crypto is going to be tolerated at all.

Underated video, cant believe crypto news and community said "we can move past cz sinces hes been charged" and everytbing is fine
