I own the D20R's and have a room mode at 42Hz that creates a bit of boom so had an extended home trial of the SCM 40's to see if an enclosed box helped. I agree with your comments but would possibly add the detail and seperation of the SCM's is absolutely outstanding and can hear every note of every instrument, the detail / "tightness" of the bass incredible ..... although it didn't dig as deep as the 20R's. With a bad recording / elevated vocals I found the D20's more forgiving, the SCM's could have a sligtly "sharper" edge to them, the SCM's also need volume to make them sing and were nowhere near as good at low listening volumes I guess as they're harder to drive and unfortunately the sealed unit didn't help with my room mode. If I didn't own any seakers and was trialing one against the other I'd find it an incredibly tough decision as they both have their strong points, the D20's whilst not quite as "refined" do still have amazing detail but are maybe slightly warmer / smoother and better at low volumes. I think it comes down to whether someone prefers the more analytical / slightly more detailed SCM's and what volume they play music at or prefer a smoother, warmer presentation that's better in a low level listening situation and would probably say the ProAcs are more of an "all rounder" so hung onto mine.
Yes, the ATCs are reknown for their detail so this doesn't surprise me at all, I think especially in the right place you're right with what you mention about picking out the different instruments, it's all incredibly natural sounding too
Great video and review. I don't have a ton of space so I chose the D2R's! Fantastic standmount speakers. Downside is with quality stands the price is about the same as the D20R's.
@@InfiniteBaffle The best Dynaudio models reproduce piano better than any other speaker on the market, to my ears. Most speakers reproduce the higher octaves of piano like breaking glass, but not Dynaudio. Their standmount models in particular have a long history of being very competitive. The best models in their current range are Evoke 10, Evoke 50, Contour 20i.
Thank you for your excellent review. I am just starting on my journey to find speakers to replace my Dynaudio Xeo 6's. It is a little overwhelming. Based on your review, I will certainly listen to the ATC speakers. I do like active speakers though and haven't ruled out the Dynaudio Focus 30's. Any thoughts/opinions you have on them would be greatly appreciated. I haven't yet had the opportunity to listen to them.
Thank you! If you prefer active speakers ATC do have the SCM40A, which is a straight up active version of the 40 on this video, also an excellent speaker, but a bit more expensive with it being an active model
@@InfiniteBaffle Thanks again. I will definitely look into the SCM40A. I understand that these speakers require a preamp/DAC, unlike the Dynaudio units.
The 30s are a pretty big jump up in price, and you do get a much improved low end, I don’t think they quite offer the same value as the 20, but are a fantastic speaker, no doubt

Thanks! The D2Rs are also great- I’m just an all round ProAc fan in truth 🤣
Great review. I wish to listen both. Proac has lots of models above but atc has more actives.
Yes, the fact ATC do more active options is a good point, love both though!
That ribbon tweeter on the Proac looks like a chinese made Aurum Cantus….
I like them!
Very good review. Dynaudio Evoke 50 would be a good competitor for both of these.
Thanks! I’ve actually never listened to any Dynaudio!

Appreciate the info, will try and listen if I get the chance!
Big fan of PROAC. Only speaker I love more is Spendor, do you ever get any in for review?
Unfortunately not, but I do hear good things!

a quick google suggests the ATC SCM40 are more like £4800 v £3800 for the Proacs
Prices will always be based on Audio Affair, the SCM40s are currently £4200 vs £3825 for the D20R 👍
are you going to do a review of the Nu.Vista 800.2?
It’s in the works as we speak 👀

@@InfiniteBaffle Would you kindly do a review of the D30RS? Am subscribing right now so I get notified when you review them. Thanks😊
@@esaulungu6968 I’ll add it to the list! 👌
Dear Proac: please please please get rid of the ugly grill pegs/anchors. They are ugly. Also: ugly.
I quite like them!
Your "review" tells me nothing new .
Besides the atc goes deeper than my speakers which is absurd.
Atc scm 40 is 48hz at -6db
The d20s are 28hz
It was more of an overview than a review, love them both!
