I am a devotee of "Belshazzar's Feast," which is a highly dramatic work. I have to say that this piece feels to me to be grounded more in the imperatives of drama than in religious feeling. That worked with Belshazzar, but it doesn't seem to me to work here. I have the feeling that this work is trying to be the score of some Daryll Zanuck or Cecil B. DeMille movie. I'll take his cello concerto over this exercise in musical bluster.
MAGNIFICENT !
I absolutely love this piece. Walton should be considered a national treasure.
Walton's choral output needs to be better known. This is superb.
My all-time FAVORITE choral composition!
