Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (ruclips.net/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/видео.html). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

He did not like to be called the King of Rock n Roll, he said the music was already there. But the impact he had on the world and the music industry at that time still stands out. He was like an earthquake, he influenced so many other artists and broke down barriers for black artists in those times of segregation. I mean, have you watched the documentaries Elvis and the black community or Remembering Elvis?
I wish the meeting between Elvis and The Beatles had been recorded ...People back then didn't think too about history , especially rock and roll history or SOMEONE would have got this stuff on tape . It's almost criminal that they didn't !
Every time a celebrity, or just a «regular person» talks about Elvis, they light up like a kid on Christmas Eve. Meeting him was something they never forgot, whether they were huge stars or just the average guy on the street. Plant simply loved Elvis, and has paid homage to him on many occasions. Like Muhammad Ali, Sammy Davis Jr, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, and about a million others who met the guy. He never, ever tried to show off or impress anybody, and most people said that he treated you like he had known you for 20 years, after about ten minutes. Elvis belonged to everyone, didn’t hurt a soul, but himself.
I remember when Elvis died. I was ten. My aunt came over to commiserate with my mom. They were crying. I didn't know why. I knew who Elvis was. We had danced around the living room listening to his records when I was younger. But I was too young to understand the emotions and the nostalgia and the grief. They were teenagers in 1956 and teenage girls were wild about Elvis in 1956. RIP.
That wasn't the only time they met..when Elvis was in hospital Ronnie Wood from the Rolling Stones tried to go see him but the guards said he's not seeing anyone but family. When he told Robert Plant what happened Plant said that same day Plant and Page were up there visiting Elvis for hours. So they kept in touch after the 1st meeting. Thanks for this bit of history..👍💙

What a time to be alive for sure! Growing up in No Cal in the 60s I saw so many things. Sinatra - Sammy Davis Jr. - Hippies and Hells Angels in Golden Gate Park - Carlos Santana - Black Panthers hanging out on the corner - The Partridge Family playing at the mall - Jim Brown visiting my elementary school in East Palo Alto, where I was one of only a handful of white kids in the whole school. So many amazing memories I wouldn't trade for anything.

Elvis gone at 42 and John Bonham gone at 32. Seems both were victims of the chaos and turmoil surrounding them. The saddest part for me is that they’ll never know how revered they’ve been for all these years.

In regard to that being a great time to be alive you're correct. Though I was still too young to really be a Zeppelin or Elvis fan then, but I still heard some of their stuff and we used to have Muhammad Ali fighting on TV, for free, and Evil Knieval making crazy motorcycle jumps on live TV, back then, along with the Wide World of Sports. With Ali and Elvis loving each other, of course, and those two are arguably the two largest icons that really represent America. As they're much alike when you think about. Inasmuch as they both have very tough and rugged personas in one way, but on the other hand they were both extremely kind and sensitive toward their fellow man.

There was never an Elvis concert not sold out and such was the case with Zeppelin, as well, when touring America. While, typically, one would follow the other right into the same venue as they were both managed by Concerts West, created by Jerry Weintraub. When the video begins, Weintraub who became a huge Hollywood producer later on working with Brad Pitt and George Cloony, etc., was referring to Colonel Parker when speaking) There are so many fun Elvis stories, I'm always amazed by it, but I'm glad you guys enjoy them, too. While in reference to Zeppelin, they were greatly influenced by Elvis and Elvis enjoyed talking to them because were inspired by that same type of black music that came out of the Mississippi Delta region. He also agreed to meet with them because his step brothers, who were teens, were big fans. You'll also hear many stars who were inspired by the younger Elvis and his early stuff, and the Beatles who were more enamored with him than anyone wish he would have never gotten away from the rockabilly or more edgy stuff. However, I've come to find that Elvis had a voice that - literally - grew too big to be confined by just that type of music. As simply listen to him sing 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' and you realize it really can't have been song any better. So, to me at least, the whole transformation of Elvis' voice, from the beginning to the end; where at that point he could have sang opera, is what's most amazing.
Elvis and his band members also started from home 🏡 and they paid their dues. Elvis, Scotty, Bill, and D.J. Fontana would perform and play various musical instruments during three - four 🍀 shows every day. They did not 🚫 get paid that much. Elvis, Scotty, Bill, D.J. and sometimes Elvis cousin or Elvis friend would come with them and travel in one vehicle 🚙 across the United States. They would all try to get some rest in one vehicle. During live performances Elvis would be singing, dancing and playing his guitar 🎸 Elvis was MULT- -TALENTED 🎤🎸🥁🎹 🎵 AND A JACK OF ALL TRADES. Elvis grew up dirt poor. Elvis learned how to play the guitar 🎸 bass 🎸 drums 🥁 accordion 🪗 ukelele and piano 🎹 on his own. Elvis was a very talented, natural, and intelligent 🤓 dancer 🩰 choreographer, music 🎼🎶 composer/arranger/producer. Elvis received a lot of death 💀😰 threats. It wouldn't' surprise me to discover that Page and Plant listened to a wide variety of music stemming from the genres of popular music while growing up from 1950's Doo Wop and Blues, Country too, and as you have just shown us here early Rock n Roll recording artists such as Elvis. It seems very possible from all of the music Led Zep has created and recorded that this is the case.

Several of his hits were aspecially written for Elvis. Otis Blacwell wrote songs for both Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Dean Martin did not write any of his songs, Frank Sinatra only wrote a couple of his.. It was very common to do covers and hire songwriters back then. Whitney Houston never wrote a song. Elton John does not write his own songs..
Personally, never a fan of Elvis, but if you listen to Plant sing, at times the Elvis came out so clearly. It's probably why the lead singer of the Dred Zeppelin tribute band, Tortelvis, dresses and sings like Elvis while doing Zep songs. You guys should do some Dred Zeppelin, hilarious, but also great music. Robert said he likes them, btw
Keep in mind Elvis had already had a 20 year career at that point. He died in 1977. Michael Jackson, Princess Diana and Elvis are the only ones who have had that level of fame and it ultimately killed them all. They were all (especially Elvis and Michael) the loneliest people too.
John Paul Jones (Zep's Bass & Keyboard Player) has a good story about meeting Elvis alone with their tour manager Richard Cole and swapping watches with him....check it out if you can find it
I don't think Elvis was in awe of Zeppelin but more had a natural interest in many types of music and people and artists in general. Their tickets were selling faster than his but he never had a concert that wasn't ultimately sold out. Elvis lost alot of the edge he had after 3 events. His mother's death, his time in the army and his foolish manager that felt a need to " tone him down and clean him up". His natural wilder side was what Zeppelin wanted to see but by 74 much of that was gone due to conditioning, health, age and Elvis desire to mature. He became obviously uncomfortable doing songs from his youth. You're right he had the advantage of being white but being accepted due to that was the ignorance and prejudice of white America, not Elvis fault. The fact that Chuck Berry , No Diddley, Little Richard and other black singers of that time didn't get the recognition they deserved had nothing to do with Elvis ... From what I understand the meeting between Elvis and The Beatles did not go well because Elvis was very supportive of the Vietnam War at the time and a very patriotic American . There are so many fun Elvis stories, I'm always amazed by it, but I'm glad you guys enjoy them, too. While in reference to Zeppelin, they were greatly influenced by Elvis and Elvis enjoyed talking to them because were inspired by that same type of black music that came out of the Mississippi Delta region. He also agreed to meet with them because his step brothers, who were teens, were big fans.
You'll also hear many stars who were inspired by the younger Elvis and his early stuff, and the Beatles who were more enamored with him than anyone wish he would have never gotten away from the rockabilly or more edgy stuff. However, I've come to find that Elvis had a voice that - literally - grew too big to be confined by just that type of music. As simply listen to him sing 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters' and you realize it really can't have been song any better. So, to me at least, the whole transformation of Elvis' voice, from the beginning to the end; where at that point he could have sang opera, is what's most amazing.
Elvis and his band members also started from home 🏡 and they paid their dues. Elvis, Scotty, Bill, and D.J. Fontana would perform and play various musical instruments during three - four 🍀 shows every day. They did not 🚫 get paid that much. Elvis, Scotty, Bill, D.J. and sometimes Elvis cousin or Elvis friend would come with them and travel in one vehicle 🚙 across the United States. They would all try to get some rest in one vehicle. During live performances Elvis would be singing, dancing and playing his guitar 🎸 Elvis was MULT- -TALENTED 🎤🎸🥁🎹 🎵 AND A JACK OF ALL TRADES. Elvis grew up dirt poor. Elvis learned how to play the guitar 🎸 bass 🎸 drums 🥁 accordion 🪗 ukelele and piano 🎹 on his own. Elvis was a very talented, natural, and intelligent 🤓 dancer 🩰 choreographer, music 🎼🎶 composer/arranger/producer. Elvis received a lot of death 💀😰 threats. During a performance in Las Vegas, a group of violent thugs came on stage to hurt 🤕 Elvis. One of the dangerous thugs was carrying a hidden sword ⚔️ There would be times that some of the fans would act crazy 😧 by tearing off Elvis clothes and vandalizing the inside of Elvis expensive vehicle 🚙 Moreover, Elvis and his band members worked hard in the studio 🎙️ a lot of times to create rockabilly sound and music 🎶🎼
Led Zeppelin made the song "Hot Dog" from the album "In Through the Out Door" as a tribute to Elvis.
It wouldn't' surprise me to discover that Page and Plant listened to a wide variety of music stemming from the genres of popular music while growing up from 1950's Doo Wop and Blues, Country too, and as you have just shown us here early Rock n Roll recording artists such as Elvis. It seems very possible from all of the music Led Zep has created and recorded that this is the case.

Elvis did covers later, most of his 60's songs were written for him by writers Lieber and Stoller.

Several of his hits were aspecially written for Elvis. Otis Blacwell wrote songs for both Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Dean Martin did not write any of his songs, Frank Sinatra only wrote a couple of his.. It was very common to do covers and hire songwriters back then. Whitney Houston never wrote a song. Elton John does not write his own songs..

Personally, never a fan of Elvis, but if you listen to Plant sing, at times the Elvis came out so clearly. It's probably why the lead singer of the Dred Zeppelin tribute band, Tortelvis, dresses and sings like Elvis while doing Zep songs. Keep in mind Elvis had already had a 20 year career at that point. He died in 1977. Michael Jackson, Princess Diana and Elvis are the only ones who have had that level of fame and it ultimately killed them all. They were all (especially Elvis and Michael) the loneliest people too.

I don't think Elvis was in awe of Zeppelin but more had a natural interest in many types of music and people and artists in general. Their tickets were selling faster than his but he never had a concert that wasn't ultimately sold out. Elvis lost alot of the edge he had after 3 events. His mother's death, his time in the army and his foolish manager that felt a need to " tone him down and clean him up". His natural wilder side was what Zeppelin wanted to see but by 74 much of that was gone due to conditioning, health, age and Elvis desire to mature. He became obviously uncomfortable doing songs from his youth. You're right he had the advantage of being white but being accepted due to that was the ignorance and prejudice of white America, not Elvis fault. The fact that Chuck Berry , No Diddley, Little Richard and other black singers of that time didn't get the recognition they deserved had nothing to do with Elvis ... Some people like to blame Elvis FOR that and they call him racist , but the REAL racists of that time were the record companies and the radio stations that didn't push black music as much as they promoted white singers . .They're the ones that held black entertertainers back , not Elvis.
From what I understand the meeting between Elvis and The Beatles did not go well because Elvis was very supportive of the Vietnam War at the time and a very patriotic American .
The Beatles, on the other hand,held a quite opposite viewpoint.
