- ACU Senior Research Fellow Kevin Donnelly has slammed the “progressive fads” allowed in classrooms in recent years.
This comes amid discussions of old-fashioned discipline being brought back to crack down on bad behaviour in the classroom.
Mr Donnelly told Sky News Australia host Peta Credlin that “what is common sense” and “what good teachers know they should be doing” has not been allowed.
“Lo and behold after all that mayhem, we’ve suddenly discovered that maybe students need to be told to be polite, to respect teachers, to respect one another”
“It’s a revelation, but it’s come too late.”
imagine that, realizing that the old actually works and that quite possibly, manners, ethics and respect are the corner stone of any civilized society
We took our son out of the state school system in year 8 at age 14 in order to homeschool him. We tested his maths and English levels and he scored at year 5 level. Fortunately, with my teaching him at home he is about to finish his year 7 level maths and start on year 8 and he is now at year 10 level in English at age 16. He can now read books and wants to. He just finished reading Animal Farm by George Orwell and did his book review. He wrote that the story is about the dangers of communism. He's a smart boy.
A lot of parents are opting for homeschooling with the addition of online tutoring services for maths and science.
Can you imagine if they bought back six of the best.
Finally...better now than never...
About time!
No learning goes on in chaos.
I'm sorry the parents are not allowed to discipline their children, but the government is? So when do we admit we live in a nanny/police state?
And what about the actual curriculum???
When i was a kid if one kid played up,we all punished ,it was a peer pressure thing,it kind of worked.
I was in Australia last year and it amazed me how badly behaved the Australian teenagers I met were. The trade school teachers can't even get them under control to teach them anything. The Australian government is constantly advertising in NZ, asking NZ teachers to come over and teach high school in Aussie, but it's not worth it. So many of the foreign-born kids in Aussie schools throw chairs and jump on their desks and refuse to obey female teachers because they come from cultures where boys don't listen to women.
Another thing that is over looked, is that they should bring in ( bring back?) schools being able to keep students back a year if they do no perform well enough in the tests, assignments and exams. As it is there is no motivation for student to perform.
The elephant in the room ... all very nice realizing what they want students to do, but how are they going to achieve that ... a few harsh words? or are they also going to bring back corporal punishment?
I agree. They are talking rubbish.
Discipline also helps kids to become better adults in the future!
ahhh, don't you worry 'bout mathematics and such... ?don't you have your mobile APPLICATION to tell you that 1+1=11?
bring back algebra quadratics and times tables.
Too late no hope no future all destroyed because of wokeness 😂
