Check out these pictures from one of the distillation from tap water. This is what's left on it. The residue water turns yellow/brownish color. The salt is 1 mm to 2 mm thick! Whatever that's in there, I don't think it's good for human consumption!

It maybe a little late but why would you want to drink distilled water. It can in fact de-hydrate you and remove needed nutrients from your body.

Drinking distilled water and not maintaining a balanced diet can cause changes in the levels of electrolytes, minerals, and pH levels in your body.
The pH of distilled water is lower than that of tap water or mineral water, making it more acidic (8). While it’s 7 immediately after distillation, after a few hours it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, bringing the pH to around 5.8. This, combined with a lack of minerals and electrolytes, can harm the balance of nutrients in the body (9).

Yes that includes all the minerals (usually just Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium) that you can find in Vitamins, and Food, but it also includes Lead, Mercury, Chlorine, Bisphenol A (BPA), Giardia Lamblia, Fluride, etc.. "It's all over the inet, so it must be true" You've obviously lacked research. So I'll ask, Please for the love of common sense actually research this? Eating Healthy, and Drinking Pure Water is the opposite of unhealthy, now if you sit on your ass all day lacking exercise and smoking then go ahead drink swamp water.

As citric acid is a little expensive to buy, white distilled vinegar works just as well. Just dilute with a little water to ensure that just the base is covered, then let it sit. Wipe around the rest of the interior with the diluted vinegar solution, leave for a while, then rinse everything. I clean mine after every usage, as it does not take long.

I own one of these. I bought it to replace a much more expensive unit that is twice as big and only distills about 3/4 of a gallon of water at a time. I used distilled water for my CPAP machine's humidifier. That's another use for distilled water including other things mentioned by other people who have commented. When you buy purified water it is water that has been distilled.
One thing about the tank that comes with it. If you rinse it out with hot water several times the poor taste and smell will go away. But I like the idea of using the other type of bottle because I like the idea of having something that doesn't take that extra little cap under the spout.
I've got this one 2 years ago. It's going right now. It does clogg up with solids around the inside. But you clean it with stuff like vinegar. Best buy ever. I boil two kettles before starting. Saves extra hour working. But it takes 3 hours after boiling 1st. That's 4 litres. It automatically turns off. Cheap looking or not. It's a good unit.

For 25 years, at advice of Jack LaLanne and other health advisers I got my first distiller all stainless steel as well. It works beautifully to this day. We have well water and hard water it is. No no acidic cleaner not needed. Vinegar all way up to fill line, leave overnight.
Next, you definitely have a used or refurbished model. Waterwise is the brand I think, but it’s an old model. That is why it was super cheap. Great company, a USA company. Yes would not use an old plastic receptacle if you don’t know where it has been. Good you got rid of it. Also, mineral drops a good idea to each gallon to replace those lost after distillation. Great video!!!
Oh, and if your preparing for the apocalypse, look into what wild plants and weeds you can eat for food and use as medicine.. The Healthy Life (RUclipsr) has a great book which goes over what weeds are eatable and not, the uses, ect.. Weeds are sometimes more nutritious than garden veggies as the roots usually dig deeper into the soil and so pull up minerals that many other plants don't. Thanks again for this video!
Excellent video. I received my distiller filled it up and made the first gallon not reading the instructions. I used a bottle of RO water I have that doesn't have a pour spout and has been sitting in the bottle over 2 years. There were some marks on the bottom of the distiller so I cleaned with the included citric acid. Came clean very easily in minutes. I drank the water and it was delicious but the pamphlet said not to drink the first batch so I discarded it.
The best part of your video was about using it as a space heater. 🤣

Use about 3-4 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar to warm water, let sit overnight to clean. Only store in sterilized glass jars and lids.
Great video. I use an external timer to shut off the unit after 3.5 hours so it doesn’t run dry.

Your tips for making the unit easier to clean, by switching off before it runs dry, and reducing energy by heating water first are brilliant.
Enjoyed your video. I drink only distilled water at home for over 3 yrs. I put it in my ice maker it is phenomenal. I never knew ice could be so refreshing. Doesn’t have any weird smell. Oh, and as for it being healthy, I’m sure that people who have had a water advisory in their areas and had to run out and buy drinking water would agree. I can get my nutrients from food thank you.

However, I did notice in the instructions they say you should not use the first bottle of distilled water. The first distilling cycle is a 'self-clean' cycle.
I'm guessing that this is why the water was so bad first time you used it.

It's not the plastic containers that smell, it usually states in
the instructions to be sure to discard the first 2 or 3 batches on the count of using oil and other chemicals during production. I'm not familiar with that particular machine, but it's the way it is with all manufactured products and are always supposed to run them a few times before consuming. I was reading some reviews on another distiller from Amazon that did not come with a container, and some were complaining that it tasted like petroleum. That is part of the manufacturing process and is why it's very important to not consume, so they always instruct to not use the first batches FYI
That container already smelled like petroleum before I even added any water in it.
@@vuaeco oh really, well it doesn't surprise me that much as they are made from petroleum and should have been washed prior to use regardless if it was in the instructions or not. But as far as the machine itself, anything that has been mechanically produced leave behind tasty residues during the manufacturing process and always need to be ran through a few x to clean them out. It's not something that can simply be washed and have got to run through a few cycles in order to completely remove residues that are not only nasty smelling, but can also cause cancer and must be eliminated before ingesting

Does it have a thermostat, do you have any details for distilling alcohol (only distillation process with this product)?

Thanks for the video. Looks like a good deal for the money. The only problem I see is that it's dripping into plastic not glass. I've heard that distilled water is especially known for leaching chemicals from plastic. With the water coming out at that temperature I think this might be a big problem unless you could find a glass carafe that would work.

@3:21 The reason the first batch of distilled water tasted like "used engine oil" was that you were supposed to pour out the FIRST THREE batches of water. After that point the machine has cleaned itself of initial new machine residue. It wasn't the plastic bottle.

I purchased this last week. It arrived today. I am excited to try it. My tap water taste salty so I haven't been drinking enough.
A couple of comments. I bought my unit from Vevor. It included some instructions. They weren't the best, but they did answer a couple of your concerns.
The cleaning reagent is citric acid. Citric acid is easily available from a number of sources and is inexpensive.
Also, in regard to the taste of the water using the included plastic container, the instructions specifically state, upon first use of distiller, to flush the main tank with 1.0L of water and 2 tbsp of citric acid, cover the head assembly, and bring to boil for about 20 min, rinse, and toss the distilled water.
After the initial "clean" job, the water should taste just fine on the next iterations.
Distilled water tends to bind with minerals in your body which removes nutrients faster than normal. It is best to add a small amount of salt or other minerals to prevent this from happening

Very well done and appreciated. You even covered electrical costs. However, I should point out that pre-heating the water to whatever temperature still contained the same amount of joules per cc. This energy had to come from somewhere and if it was from your stove or water heater then the only thing you saved was time, the energy costs would be the same. Thank-you

Good for emergencies, but not for everyday use (based on cost) for where we live. Thanks for the video that helps with understanding that ... mid-tier higher priced electricity means almost $1 per gallon, which we can buy in a store locally for. If we were lower tier, then it's only $.40 per gallon.

The problem is that store-bought water has been sitting in plastic containers.
Just a tip...Put the Citric Acid, one teaspoon, in with the water you are boiling, don't let the distiller shut off by itself, stop when the jug is just about full, then you won't need to descale it. The
Citric Acid is used in cooking and in candy so it won't hurt you. The distiller will last longer.
The carbon bag makes the water taste better.

After this video; bought my own from an eBay seller by the name of happykisssoul - very happy with it. Also to clean the gallon from that nasty smell - I used baking soda and vinegar while swishing it around the gallon.
@@nef003 - Go to Walmart, there is a 3 Gallon Water Bottle that is BPA FREE. The Brand Name is: AmericanMaid Water Bottle Dispenser and it's a refillable 3 or 5 Gallon Storage Bottle. That would be perfect for your Water Storage, since it's BPA FREE!

Excellent video. Finally got my hands on one of these. Very efficient indeed. I set a 4 hour timer to turn it off just before it cook off all the water for easy cleaning. To save more energy, I only plug in the fan 30 mins after the water comes to a boil. Cost about 35¢ per gallon according to Killawatt meter in my area.

I collect my water in a stainless steel pot and then I put the distilled water into a glass bottle. Don't forget about the charcoal filter in the water distiller outlet.

P.S. this "Ebay Water Distiller" appears to be the same as the "VEVORbrand" distiller at Walmart.
I would strongly suggest against using a plastic bottle to collect the distilled water. It defeats a large part of the purpose of distilling the water in the first place, since phthalates, perfluorooctanoic acid, bisphenol A/F/S, etc., all end up leaching into the water from the plastic. Use something made of glass or stainless steel to collect and drink the water from.

A great video, but it would be most helpful to list the brand and model number. Sadly, all these cheap distillers (and even some of the more expensive ones!) seem to get a lot of bad reviews on Amazon. The inner workings are quite basic, so WHY can't the manufacturers get it right?!
Awesome Tutorial, but the cleaning step was a bit confusing. I wasn't sure if you were boiling the water in the tank with the Citric Acid in it, or just letting it sit in the tank for a bit.

VERY GOOD review. I really appreciated it . I am thinking of purchasing another distiller off Ebay soon. Water and having good CLEAN water is more important than people realize.
I use to have a Waterwise Distiller. They are loud too. I would leave it on the counter over night and in the morning ,have a gallon waiting for me . But when it died , I just starting getting the huge 5 gallon bottles and going to a water store that has reverse osmosis .I need more water as I use it in a rice cooker and that takes many cups of fresh water.
I have never liked tap water. My Grandmother, back in the early 1960's, said Los Angeles tap water was the worst she had ever tasted and she said they thought they were putting chemicals into the water. She would not drink it nor use it for cooking ! She started to receive Water delivery at her home (Arrowhead water ) and had it delivered until she passed away in the 1980's. Back then they would rent you a water cooler and deliver the bottles to your home, but the bottles were made of GLASS. And, very heavy ! I now days try and store water in glass only although that's not always possible . If people could find a huge glass water bottle at a Yard sale or Flea Market they should snap it up . It will be well worth it. If you buy a Big Berkey you can have water without electricity if it goes down.

Distill water has some what of a metallic taste. The charcoal filter that came with mine didn't do the job, so I removed it. Once the water is distilled, I run it through a charcoal filter pitcher and that removed the distinct distilled water taste. Works great! U can buy the cheaper great value brand pitcher at Wal-Mart. It flows faster and all u need is a charcoal filter, so no need to spend big bucks on one b/c the water is already clean n pure.

I have a feeling that this small distiller might have a lot of pesticide residue since, as I think I read, pesticides will vaporize along with the water and be in the final distilled product. Some of the larger distillers have a post-distillation filter to help lessen the problem.
The gasket on mine leaks like a sieve. It's awful. Please note, I am a retired auto mechanic who has been dealing with gaskets since the early 1980s.
I decided to go with the marine grade megahome distiller but in all my research I got a few tips etc & your video covered them also so well done on a comprehensive video...I think that the distiller you have is known to run on too many watts hot noisy & unreliable & any company that uses non BPA plastic to store water is just cutting too many corners.still at that price it’s not a bad buy..

Thanks for this great video. I just started using a C-PAP machine which requires distilled water. I find distilled water very limited at my grocery store, in fact the last two times I purchased it there was only one gallon left each time…lucky me 😅. Since I only need one cup per night this seems a viable alternative source.

With all the chemicals that's in water these days especially in England where they add fluoride its good to filter water, the amount of crud I'm my distiller is unbelievable after use,no wonder people get sick from drinking tap water.
