      I have a silver one just like this one being tested. It looks better in silver. The car itself drives very well, and gets great gas mileage, as Steve says.

    I'd argue that VW/Audi's design style has been spot on since 2010 (or earlier, based on opinion). 2010 Jettas, Passats, Golfs, etc...still look very sophisticated and even classy in 2016.
    It's very simple design, which makes it very handsome even for models several years old.

  • @srw1111
    @srw1111 8 лет назад +70

    I totally disagree that the styling of this car is staid and dull. Rather it is elegantly conservative, with clean lines and gentle curves. Many other cars have pointless styling accents which serve no purpose other than to attempt to look trendy and make the model look very dated after a decade.

    • @5serieslover
      @5serieslover 8 лет назад +11

      Exactly, this car will still look clean in 10 years.

      I think the styling really does a great job of maintaining corporate identity. VW's are easily identified on the road. I've had a 2016 Jetta S 1.4 TSI/Manual TSI since March 29th. Drove from Charlotte to Savanah, and out of 505 miles got 44.2/43.7, fuel math versus gauge mpg. On a trip to Oak Island NC got 43.6/42.9. Why get a diesel for $4,000, or $5,000 more dollars with mileage like that. The 1.4 is also a sweet little engine, revs freely, with a great sound, all 184 ft lbs of torque are available at 1400 rpm.

    • @Doggieman1111
      @Doggieman1111 8 лет назад +5

      Yep. The fact is, most people have terrible taste. Folks who think Hyundais and Nissans with their silly swoops are "more exciting" than VWs have zero class.

    I just bought a super clean 2016 SE w/5 speed manual trans.& 20K miles. For $13K, I feel it was a great deal. I love the car. It's quick, comfortable, and the infotainment is great. 2-3 yr old Mazdas did not offer Apple Car Play & their paint was severely chipped. VW paint is superior IMO. The sound system overall is better than average. I don't know where you're coming up with "poor" quality. If you're expecting 10 Bose speakers, they are not in this car. For a basic sound system, I give it a 6.5/10. My next car will be a GLI..

    honestly, i don't get this whole new blindspot moniter detection craze. i would much rather just get those circular mirrors you can buy and stick on to the side mirrors, i think it would be way cheaper just to give all cars one of those extra mirrors instead of this blindspot moniter foolishness.

    • @oopla20
      @oopla20 7 лет назад +1

      Sorry for the late reply. It does handle quite well through corners and absorbs bumps on the road with ease. However, it does feel a bit sloshy through canyon roads, but that's a bit extreme. The gas mileage is great; I am averaging at around 35-38 mpg in the city and up to 42 mpg on the highway.

      +TestDriveNow.com featuring Auto Critic Steve Hammes Great! my next purchase will be in that price bracket. I've read that Honda benchmarked VW, especially the Audi A3. My only reservation would be that I would like a Manual transmission, and the relatively new Turbo in the Civic. the VW drives great but man, looks dull. I would probably lean towards the Golf. The Mazda 3 is great but a little bit unrefined and noisy. I love Toyota but the Corolla S driving dynamics is a little lacking and the Scion iM is a little boy racer for this 45 year old man. lately to be honest I been learning towards the Jeep Cherokee for its room and great real world pricing. Drives like a good European vehicle too. anyway, thanks for your input.

    Great review. I'm a little shocked at the sticker price. In the 18-20k range, this car would be great. 23k has a lot of competition. Still, VW and Audi make some of the best turbo engines, and this seems to be another gem.

      +mompfredXL I 100% agree! The Euro Passat is amazing looking and yet we get the boring vanilla old man one instead. The only Euro VW's we get are the CC and GTI and those are the only VW's I buy. However, most people here in the states only care about 2 things, reliability and practicality. The American Passat has a huge trunk so we can fit all our junk food and 20 cup holders to fit everyones Big Gulps while driving to the grandmas house. The American Passat is a bit dumbed down in performance to keep it reliable. 0 to 60 in 10 seconds ohhhh yeah!!! Im saving gas! I bet you the next VW Passat will be some ugly Passat Crossover!

Los Angeles kicks it off at around Thanksgiving, the big kahuna, the North American International Auto Show in Detroit is in January. Chicago is in February, and New York is usually around Easter. I own this 1.4T model. After the low end torque, up into 4000RPMs it feels a little less powerful but it'll go. At the low end it pushes you back into your chair and the car itself hugs the road

    • @ryanhouk3560
      @ryanhouk3560 11 месяцев назад

      I'm very much assuming this comment is too late by far. I got this car new 7 years ago. It's by far the quickest car I've ever owned, but it isn't fast.
      In an urban setting or autocross where you need to get up to speed and be more aggressive, the engine performs all day.
      On a drag strip? You'll notice it fall short to actual performance models and a bit sluggish at higher RPMs.

    Howdy, as for price of gas? Your statement[of expensive diesel] must be in regards to your location only; because diesel is 1.85 while regular is 1.55.

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  8 лет назад

      +Zavier H I based it off of the current EPA estimates which is a national average. Even though the 2015 Jetta TDI auto is rated +4mpg at 36mpg combined, the cost to drive 25 miles is $1.34 in the 1.4T versus $1.37 in the TDI. Not a huge difference there. But where I live in NY, the spread increases; diesel is averaging $2.32/gl.

  • @froggydoes7092
    @froggydoes7092 8 лет назад

    I paid $1.95 for diesel and regular gas was $1.86 just for comparison.

    • @meestabeckful
      @meestabeckful 8 лет назад

      +Ara J The S, S w/connectivity and SE are available with the 5 speed manual. You can get the Sport with the 1.8t and a 5 speed, and the GLI of course.
      I test drove the base S with this motor (the 1.4) and the 5 speed. I was blown away.
      I think the reduced weight of the all aluminum block in the 1.4 just about covers the 20 hp gap to the cast iron block 1.8tsi.
      Both engines have the same torque, and I felt that the 1.4 really got moving for such a small motor, and it is hard to find a good manual for under $20k
      That is why I am buying it. $16.5k after discounts (before tax).

    • @Ara198826

      meestabeck no idea what VW is thinking here we get Skoda which is exactly vw with different badge , the Octavia (which is jetta )comes with 1.8 turbo same in jetta but with a lovely 6 speed manual

    • @meestabeckful
      @meestabeckful 8 лет назад

      Ara J Strangely, the 6 speed manual came with the TDi, but since we cannot get the TDI until they get that all sorted out here in the US, no 6 speed.
      I am quite jealous of your wide range of manual gearbox options. From Mitsubishi to Vauxhall, manual transmissions offered for the lot. The only manual Mitsubishi you can get in the states is the FWD Lancer or the Lancer EVO. And, of course Vauxhall is not offered here at all, and most Americans have no idea that it is even a car company....

      buildmorefarms100 In the US, maybe. Here, not so much.
      The base model costs the same here, but it has a 1.2 turbo petrol with 105 hp, which is... Slow. And it has steel wheels. And it has no things such as keyless entry, leather, an auto gearbox, or anything. No reading lamps on the roof, cruise control is an option, touch screen infotainment is an option even on the top trim. The real base model costs far more. Oh, and you also don't get height adjustment in the driver seat as standard. No, it's not even an option. You have to move up a trim.
      Are you starting to understand my problem? The base model that actually functions as a car (1.4t, manual, no navigation, just the very basics) costs above 20k. At least here.
