"Chaconne is a musical form that originated in Europe during the 17th century, based on dance tunes that were transmitted from South America. It evolved into a variation form and became an important musical structure during the Baroque era. Typically, a short theme of 4 to 8 measures is repeated in the bass, with variations built on top of it. The chaconne by composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Tomaso Antonio Vitali is particularly famous.
Vitali’s Chaconne in G minor has sparked scholarly debates due to unclear composer attributions in the music manuscripts and differences between Vitali’s music and other works. In the 19th century, violinist Ferdinand David introduced this piece as Vitali’s composition, while French violinist Charles Dancla added more virtuosity and richness to the chaconne, resulting in a more elaborate and expressive version. Ultimately, the composer of the chaconne remains uncertain, but it is clear that it underwent transformations through the hands of various musicians.
The original title of Vitali’s chaconne is ‘Chaconne for Violin and Continuo,’ and the melancholic violin melody, reminiscent of sobbing, has led to this work being dubbed the ‘saddest piece on Earth.’ While whether it truly holds that title is subjective, the descending fourths in the opening accompaniment already introduce a sense of melancholy from the very beginning."
샤콘느(Chaconne)는 남아메리카에서 전해진 춤곡을 바탕으로 17세기에 유럽에서 유행했는데 그것이 변주곡 형태로 발전하여 바로크시대의 중요한 음악 형식으로 자리를 잡게 되었습니다.통상 4~8마디의 주제가 저음으로 반복되고 그 위에 변주가 형성되는 형식으로, 바흐와 비탈리의 샤콘느가 제일 유명합니다.
비탈리의 샤콘느 G단조(Chaconne in G minor)는 음악 원고의 작곡자 표기가 명확하지 않고 비탈리 음악과의 차이점 등으로 학자들 사이에서 비탈리의 작품이 맞는가에 대한 진위 논란이 있습니다. 19세기 바이올리니스트 페르디난트 다비드가 이 곡을 비탈리의 작품으로 소개했고, 프랑스의 바이올리니스트 샤를리에가 바이올린에 좀 더 기교를 넣으면서 더 화려하고 풍부한 샤콘느가 탄생하게 됩니다. 결국 샤콘느의 작곡가에 대해서는 여전히 불분명하지만, 여러 사람의 손을 거쳐 탄생된 것임은 분명해 보입니다.
비탈리 샤콘느의 원제는 ‘바이올린과 통주저음을 위한 샤콘느’로 비장한 듯하면서 흐느끼는 듯한 바이올린 선율은 이 작품을 ‘지상에서 가장 슬픈 곡’으로 불리게 했습니다. 이 곡이 지상에서 가장 슬픈 곡인지는 감상자가 선택할 몫이지만 처음부터 쏟아져 나오는 4도 하행 반주는 이미 곡의 시작부터 슬픈 곡임을 소개하고 있습니다.
