I give stock footage people a lot of credit, it is a LOT of work/dedication to render out individual clips and label them correctly. And to answer your pinned comment, I do a lot of cinematic footage of nature/wildlife but incorporate them into vlogs and what not to show off my life in Remote Alaska.

The stock industry is really almost a different animal now compared to when I started selling my images thru Getty in 2000. Back then I was mostly an editorial photographer--often travel magazines and sometimes commercial jobs esp resorts. I actually ended up with an art director at Getty and I'd do shoots for Getty. Before digital I was probably averaging 80K a year in this side gig of stock sales in the early 2000s. One shoot I did with Getty about business people on a train probably brought in 30K alone in I think 2007? But my art director was let go and Getty was bought out (2012/) and digital allowed less tech savvy but creative photographers add their stock to the game. Just the law of supply and demand brought down the dollars available. And also, like your sample clip, basically motion these days. BTW, my former art director at Getty said "business, business and business" sells. But also now wellness...

I'm a photographer that switched to video in the pandemic and I am kinda struggling with making my reel. Since I am more new at this I second guess my content and then I feel like it's not good enough (as in its not interesting and compared to someone as experienced.) Hey Chris have you ever thought of making a video on Grey Market Cameras? I just bought a Canon 90d and found I could not register it with Canon because it was a Grey Market product. I've learned my lesson but I know there are lots of folks out there that would appreciate this information.
I shoot drone footage and upload to blackbox. Typically i shoot in 60fps and slow down by 50% and export/upload at 30fps.
1. Should i keep the footage at 60fps and upload as is or slow down and upload at 30fps?
I have been shooting in C4K (4096 by 2160) and uploading to BB at that rate.
2. Should I remain at C4K or shoot at “normal” 4k?
Can confirm...BlackBox is legit. I was able to send some of my stock footage. I haven't been as active due to many other projects, but whenever there are periods between projects, I love selecting and creating stock footage for BlackBox.

So do you build this in to your contracts with client work? I feel like if i'm filming for a client it's their footage. Would love to know how you handle that. (Love from the east coast, PEI)

Cool video! How do you handle situations where you have no model release, especially in other countries when doing street photography / shooting stuff when you travel? How do you ensure you are allowed to sell the image, especially when it's only 1 other person on it? That person might have consented to you taking the picture, but might not be happy if you sell it to others?
I think any stock agency these days will require a model release. Some images are "editorial" and don't endorse a product. A stock agency manager once told me that even if the model can recognize themselves you need a model release.

I've got about 1k videos on BlackBox, mostly Drone shots, timelapses and I'm waiting for my partner to Keyword a whole bunch more clips which include people in them, but she's pregnant with our 2nd child and not able to get much spare time.
This means I've been getting about USD$35/month pretty consistently from a couple of sales a month.
I've actually worked on a system to auto-generate keywords with some AI systems. However I can't find the spare time to complete it, which is unfortunate as I think it would make the lives of many Stock Footage curators much better.

Great vid as always Chris, I have a question though. How does the discussion go when using clients "extra" footage in stock that could potentially be used anywhere including the same demo. I shoot many small businesses throughout the year and I think they would get a little weird about it if they see their sandwich in their competitors sandwich commercial. How do you have this discussion with your clients? Thanks

Or make it clear in your contract. Or be selective with the clips you upload that feel more exclusive.

Bive vid! But a few things i dont understand here Chris! You are uploading to blackbox and show it in the video. But then say stuff along the way, such as:
- Uploading raw footage, cause its a higher price point
- uploading 5,9k, because its a higher price point
- shooting 60-120 fps so the client can slow it down
But according to the bb success guide, 60fps is max when uploading to blackbox. 4k is highest resolution allowed, and raw footage is not accepted at this point.

I have sell to getty images since 2011 is true that they pay super low on the footage most people I have recommend to do stock they just upload less than 50 images and think they will make thousands but the truth is you need volume, I have more than 15,000 images on getty and I have made since 2011 $53,777 dlls and that is a good business
And Getty is not my main income I am a pro cinematographer, I do a lot of different media that pays- Getty is just my (colchon in spanish) small cash box for the moments I have to have that extra money

As an older man with no experience and training, I’ve been able to build up my stack footage sales to average about $600 a month. It is not easy but if I can do it, anyone can. Thanks for this video.

@@annasan - I do a month report of earnings. Keep in mind I had no experience and my first year, the clips I submitted were terrible. Now, I have just over 4,000 clips. But it depends on the type of video you shoot, models, locations, etc. I know people with much higher earnings and fewer clips. It took me 4 years to improve and grow a larger portfolio. Still learning. I work on it about 10 hours a week for four years.
