    People say “Luke, I am your father” rather than “No, I am your father” because out of context, it makes more sense. If you just say “no, I am your father” without prior referencing the scene or the movie then what meaning does it carry?

      @Brandon Wakefield Mandela was released but people remember seeing the 90's movie Cry Freedom where Denzel as South African Anti Apartheid leader Steven Biko died. All Mandela effects are pretty easily explainable. Things people never noticed, misremembered or heard wrong. Sex and (sounds like "in" because no one emphasizes that word). But of course you can win any argument by saying your memory is perfect it's the universe that changed a lame detail.... for no particular reason. I think Mandela Effect, Flat Earthers, Anti Vaxxers, 911 truthers and moon landing hoaxers all are the beginning or the Age of Idiocracy.

The Death Star is a MASSIVE waste of money and resources. Seems to me they were doing just fine ruling the Galaxy without it. I mean, the Empires biggest defeats involved a Death Star while they struck back just fine without it.

    the reason that everyone gets the "no, I am your father" line wrong is because the audio quality for movies wasn't that great in the '80s, so when people heard that line, the pause between "no" and "I" had the effect that it sounded like "no-ook". So even though Vader pauses, it sounds more like "no LUKE" Listen to the audio queue at 10:21, you can kinda hear the "no-ook" when he pauses.

      Actually, if Obi-Wan knows the context of what the Kessel Run is, which the way it's referenced by others, likely does, it does actually hold up still in that context because the ship needs to be fast enough to escape the pull of gravity to not be pulled in by the blackholes and all. So while it may be a measure of distance, actually also serves as a measure of speed. What he's basically saying is "My ships fast enough to get closer to the black holes in the maw and escape cutting more than 6 parsecs off the trip". Was that the intent of the original line? who knows. Maybe he was try into swindle them, maybe he was boasting about his skills and his ship, either way, not exactly out of character.
      And lets also remember that I don't think ANY Star Wars media that is still considered relevant to canon, actually has any measurement of speed beyond light, and not light. Have to bring it in, but Star Trek, this ship goes warp 9, that one is warp 5, both faster than light but there is a number associated that lets you know it's a faster speed in that range, like a mach number. Light speed eems to be light speed in most cases in Star Wars meaning the only speed difference would be below that and again, we get no reference numbers. And what would they even go by? They give us an idea that a ship is faster, but how much? Why do TIE's close in on X-wings the way they do, how is it generally Anakin seems to have modded his fighters for more speed than others, etc. Closest I recall to a true indication of a speed is that Han managed to make a longer trip shorter, likely by being able to take a shorter route that his ship has the speed and agility to use, assuming he isn't just lying.

    Coruscant
    The idea for the capital of the Empire being a city that covers a whole planet was not original. It was inspired by Trantor, from Isaak Azimov's Foundation series. It was first mentioned in a short story in 1941. The word, 'Coruscant', used by George Lucas as the name of the city/planet, is mentioned in a description of the skies over the Central Worlds in "Pebble in the Sky", (another Azimov Foundation-related book from 1950). Lucas also got the inspiration for the Galactic Empire from Azimov's Foundation stories... Azimov got his inspiration from the Roman Empire.

I prefer the ideaof Palpatine intending to rule for ever and not even really taking into account the possibility of dieing (atleast in that situation). Simply "destroy the Empire if I die" seems to me more like a measurement by Disney to have the people have this compelte "Feel good" moment, to give the "new order" the "time it needs" to have it's next utter failure of a WMD (really... stop giving a faction such a WMD like the DS or Starkiller if you blow it up in the same movie... Atleast if you are planning for more movies... it makes it look useless)...

      Actually I think the reason people remember the line as "Luke, I am your father." is pretty simple. Imagine if you told someone the line, "No, I am your father." Unless the person remembered the line exactly they may not know that you're referencing Star Wars. When you add the character Luke into the line, the reference, while technically incorrect, is made much more apparent. So when telling someone the line, you are more likely to say, "Luke, I am your father."

    • @dostap7748
      @dostap7748 6 лет назад +8

      Adding on to ^ Darth Vader being Luke's father has been one of the biggest reveals in last 50 years of cinema, which means that you can pretty much assume that most people know that he is his father even if they haven't seen Star Wars ever. So using the characters name during discussion after this came out (where there was no internet to find out for the next 30 years unless you watch it again or for the first time after hearing about it) makes a lot of sense to why a lot of people (non fans) think it is that line

Simple; the Falcon's computer has a far superior plotting system. The shortest distance between two objects is a straight line, and the Falcon knows how to calculate that shortest distance faster than other ships.

      Actually, having the ability to go to hyperspace doesn't help when you are dealing with the gravity of a black hole. When a ship goes to hyperspace it enters a parallel dimension where objects in real space become "shadow"s. Crashing into a shadow will obviously cause death, so all ships with hyperspace capabilities have automatic sensors that will detect any shadows and in an emergency drop the ship back into real space. The shadow is caused by gravity so anything with a large gravity well will show up as a shadow in hyperspace. Like a black hole for instance, or the artificial gravity generated by the imperial interdictor cruiser.

    It is also explained in the expanded universe that the literal speed of the spaceship is hardly relevant, because modern hyperdrives can easily cross half the galaxy within less than one standard day (in fact, that's exactly what we see in the original Star Wars movie, as Darth Vader mentions that the death of Obi-Wan and the Battle of Yavin happen within the same day, despite Yavin being pretty far from Alderaan). But that is possible only given a clear easily accessible hyperspace route that allows to travel large distances without bothering to avoid obstacles. Pairs of locations that are physically on the same distance from each other can have drastically different travel times depending on how far they are from major hyperspace routes. Using a ground analogy, it's like a difference between driving on a direct highway and crossing the wilderness in the mountains.
    So having a good navigator that has a large database of hyperlanes and can quickly calculate the best route to take is much more important than speed in a literal sense. So Han is boasting that his ship can take a shorter, albeit somewhat more dangerous, route for the Kessel run.

    Regarding the use of the word Parsec, we have to consider the nature of Lightspeed [Faster than Light, or (FTL) ] travel in the Star Wars universe. I know there's probably a huge article on a Star Wars wiki that explains it, but I'm just going to spitball here...
    Since Lightspeed seems to propel a ship into a state of transportation that shows the stars whizzing by leaving light trails as if someone left the shutter open while moving a camera, this could mean that Lightspeed is a form of Time & Dimension Travel _ (or perhaps calling it _spacetime ) rather than simply transportation through space from point A to point B, like a plane flying from New York to LA. Instead, a ship bends spacetime, between two locations thus shortening distances.
    For example, if two star systems are naturally 20 parsecs apart (as the crow flies), then when Lightspeed is engaged, it bends spacetime to actually shorten (or squeeze together) those 20 parsecs so that the ship actually travels the distance 12 parsecs instead of 20. So to put it simply, a ship squeezes spacetime together enabling a ship to traverse long distances as if they were actually shorter.
    In the movie, Han Solo says, "She'll make point five past lightspeed." which could mean that the FTL drive multiplies the distance of 20 parsecs times .5, thus making the travel time equal to travelling only 10 parsecs (20 x .5 = 10)
    so that's my theory. meh... poe-tay-toe, poe-tah-toe, toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe

    • @TheHitman267
      @TheHitman267 6 лет назад

      amasa657 actually a parsec is based on the distance between the Sun and another astronomical body, like another star. A parsec is 3.67 light-years, and until 2015 wasn’t at all tied to astronomical units. Also, in a “galaxy far, far away” may have a different concept of a year, it is not universal. A measure of distance would be far more likely to be similar than a measure of time in a galactic civilization. Their concept of “a year” would be standardized, and therefore would probably not be like what we recognize. Just saying.

    • @TheHitman267
      @TheHitman267 6 лет назад

      amasa657 though that doesn’t prevent them from following the exact same formula we did and making the same conclusions. Granted, the Parsec of that universe would be different, but given that the habitable zone of stars is measurably similar in order to support life and produce liquid water, which are both comparable to our universe. That’s why I said it would be equally likely. And I do apologize, I had been reading up on parsecs and you did point out a bit that I had missed, my bad on that.

    I find most so called Star Wars fans not only don't know much about Star Wars but tend not to understand it either.
    Why don't you listen to the audio commentary of Episode 4. It's simple and Lucas explains it. It wasn't some screw up in the script.
    When you travel in Hyperspace you have to set a course to avoid hitting stars, asteroid feilds, planets, etc. The "12 parcecs " that Han Solo talks about is the ability of his navigation computer to figure out this real quick route. But it is not some special hyperspace by-pass freewill or whatever you are saying. And no mistake in the script. If you have either the DVD / Blu-Ray of A New Hope (not some download) turn on the audio commentary track. You will learn more about Star Wars then from even a book.

    The stormtrooper aim continues into the Rebels cartoon. Then again, Rex remarks that he can't see out of the helmets the stormtroopers are wearing. Since the eye holes are so small, that makes sense. I wear a costume that covers my face for cosplay purposes, trust me when I say this but your vision is very impaired by stuff like that and I don't think the targetting stuff in the helmets would help that much either. Also, will people please stop saying the clones and stormtroopers are one and the same. THEY AREN'T. There were a mix of natural born humans and clones in the Empire but by the time of Rebels which is set 5 years before A New Hope, most of the clones were retired (by the way, Rex is actually younger than Ahsoka) or dead and production of clones had been stopped only a few days into the reign of the Empire.

    I think "Luke, I am your father" is so popular, despite fans knowing better, because so many people have NOT seen Star Wars. Or at the very least, saw it "Once, 12 years ago, when I was hanging out with my brother and his friends." or something along those lines. These days especially, I know more people who have either never seen it, or who only saw it so few times that they actually aren't interested in the franchise, than I do people like me who are dedicated enough to have even read the books. Saying "Luke, I am your father" is more recognizable than, "No, I am your father" because it explicitly says one of the main characters names. This tends to trigger more memories of having at least seen that scene or being aware of its existence. Its anecdotal, but I personally have observed more recognition when I say the line wrong, than when I say it right. And I think that has more to do with Luke's name being referenced than any sort of meme culture.
    That being said, I think actual fans know the correct line, but willingly say it wrong to increase recognition of the reference.
