Two decades in 40K and I’ve never wanted to paint Eldar, until I watched this - you’re really piling on the temptation with these awesome looking models and a scheme that can be replicated!
Glad I can finally bring you to the best ever army
One of the best tips for the airbrush I’ve ever gotten was from Marco frisoni and he pointed out that a lot of the time after you’ve used the airbrush especially as the final step models can have a very distinctively airbrushed look. This is because even if the paint is thinned and atomized very well it still has a micro dotted texture on the surface and our brains pick that up.
So what you can do is after your final airbrush layer you can go back in with a fairly thinned down oil wash of a similar color and then let that sit on the model for 10-15 minutes and then remove almost all of it with a makeup sponge without using white spirits. This wont change the color of your model much if any but by letting the oil paint sit and then not using white spirits to wipe it up the oil paint will find its way into the gaps left by the airbrush on a molecular level and will blend all your previous layers together.
This will entirely remove that airbrushed look making it feel more substantially in the way brush painted minis look but at a fraction of the time.
Nice tip
It's very unusual that RUclips comments are worth taking notes on but congratulations, friend! That is one awesome tip! Maybe worth a demo and an idea for a video, Juan?
thank you for sharing!
@@freshwaterspaceman7194 the video i got the tip from was from marco frisoni’s ushoran speed painting video if you are curious
@@wolf-xf6hf Cheers mate, I'll be sure to check that out! :D
Eldar Wraithmodels are some of the nicest the GW make imo, they're not the newest but they'll always by my favo... shinyest! The Juan treatment really does them justice, lovely stuff as usual!
Those are beautiful! Yellow will always be a challenging colour to get right, but so worth doing. The yellow absolutely pops.
The eldar army is gonna be awesome!
What a great technique to oil wash prior to applying the color. Thanks Juan. I JUST finished my Wraithlord and now want to do another one!
Hey! I mentioned wanting to try a cobalt violet pin wash after the white armor video, and here it is! Looks incredible here and works so well with the yellow. Color theory strikes again!
Color theory FTW!
I remember asking you like years ago about whether you air brush as I needed help painting bright yellow vehicles! Look who's finally joined the cool kids club😂 looks amazing, i will definitely have to muck about with using the oils like that as I usually just sprayed warlord purple, then came back and sprayed top down with white and then moved onto using imperial fist contrast through the air brush.
Yeah, I love the thing now
Incredible work Juan, very inspiring!
Thanks
Amazing work! I’d love to see you do a custom Eldar paint scheme
I love Everything about this video. Gorgeous, gorgeous minis!! Beautiful job.....except for the Helmet colors!! 🤣🤣🤣😂
Great yellow, but man, those heads are the best! Well done!!
Thanks
I think yellow is my favourite colour to paint. It just looks great. I started a howling griffon today
Nice
Goddamn now I want Eldar
LoL
These are amazing. Great video.
They look so great Juan! I challenge you to take on the Mymeara craftworld, I’d love to see your interpretation
Beautiful!!
I’m planning to do mine as Yme-Loc. I’d love to see your take on how to paint them.
Not painting Eldars but this might finally help me finish up Ironjawz from AoS!
these look great man especially for the time investment its kinda nuts tbh
Just beautiful.
Shoutout to the BGM that Buy Painted used to use in all their videos! :) That was a memory trigger!
Believe it or not, it's pure coincidence 😂
Vous avez du galerer à nettoyer la montagne ensucré! Magnifique en tout cas !
Amazing! Can we expect Alaitoc rangers in the near future?
Most definitely, I have a unit in my army
Lovely miniatures Juan! As someone who doesnt have an airbrush how would you recommend replicating airbrushing step? Drybrushing or using diluted washes?
Drybrushing for sure. Check my Zero Skill Yellow video
BEAUTIFUL
When will you be painting all the Spirit Stones? 😂
j/k - these look fantastic. I wonder if a few decals might be an easy way to dress them up even further?
Probably, but the decal sheet doesn't have blue Iyanden symbols as I prefer them. I think I'm going to order some custom made and then do all the decals at once (infinite symbol on the head mainly)
Models don't actually have that many Spirit Stones. Only the "lumps" with what looks like a gem setting are stones, the rest of the bumps are just texture.
This is according to Jes Goodwin himself
Espectaculares las minis! Lastima que no sean Ynnari!😅
Un saludo Juan!
Amazing! Did you also use airbrush to paint the yellow on the Spiritseer, or contrast/speedpaint?
Exactly the same process plus some extra highlights as detailed in my Patreon
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thx!
Beautiful, ty for sharing : )
Can you do Alaitoc next? I want to see how you paint their mottled camo.
Maybe, I want to paint an Alaitoc unit (rangers) so I'm sure at some point they will be featured in a video
Do you have any plans to do alaitoc on yt or Patreon? amazing work as alway Juan!
I will paint some Alaitoc Rangers for sure, just not sure when
Gorgeous 😍
Now do Biel Tan!
I have a Falcon planned in Biel Tan colours
How long do you wait for the oils to dry before going over with acrylics?
I usually plan my painting so that I apply the oils and clean them as the last step of the day. That way I can leave the models drying overnight. But if you can't wait, usually 2-3 hours is enough.
I really want to try this, I've always really wanted to try the pink + yellow technique. I've tried oil washes before but they always come out really oily and glossy.
That REALLY shouldn't happen, oils should dry very matte. What kind of oils are you using?
How do I know if an oil with stain or not before buying?
You can look at what pigment is in it and do some research online. It usually takes very little to find out as pigments are thoroughly tested and all the properties are very clearly stated in their datasheets.
But what I do because I own a lot is to do a simple test over a piece of sprue
Now I want more to buy eldars instead of decreasing my pile of potential...
I would be interested in how you do this with other colors.
Check my Zero Skill series!
Thanks for the tip. Now I'm buying some oil paints and a new set of dry brushes. 😅 I appreciate the videos!
can you link an example of a mineral spirit? the last one i bought removed all the paint....
Would it be much different if I brushed on a yellow contrast paint, like iyanden yellow, instead of using an airbrush?
It would look different, but you can definitely do it. I would do Iyanden 1:1 with medium
would you mind sharing your basing colours?
It's just an athonian camoshade over an AK desert basing paste. That's all
@ thank you for the reply! Undiluted I guess?
@Meraklis80 yes
veo que al final te uniste al lado oscuro, mi joven amigo...
Jajajajaja, eres una mala influencia
I was setting to paint my Eldar in the Biel-tan scheme.
I guess not anymore
Iyanden is the superior Craftworld anyway
Where do you get mineral spirits?
Any paint store, any art store. Depending on where you live, hardware stores or supermarkets even
will you be fielding any harlequin units in your army?
YES, at least a couple characters but hopefully a unit too
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures brilliant stuff, will be awaiting eagerly
*crosses fingers and hopes for Saim-Hann Windriders that I can copy* 😊
He does have an easy red recipe that you can probably adapt for airbrush use!!
@markbaker9323 you most definitely can and would look amazing
Can you just do a base coat of purple with standard GW/Vallejo pinks? I don't really want to mess with oils.
You can always do the recess shade with acrylics, but it's going to take at least 10 times longer.
Decidedly enjoyed the video. Don't agree with you over oils, for example, how long did it take to get those oils to touch dry? Me, painted my Eldar wraith warriors in metallics way back when, with the defining colour Tin Bitz. Yes I have more Aeldari to paint but I bought a bunch of Tin Bitz pots when they said they were ditching it. The best way to make metals look good is to paint the peripheries with acrylic colours, like green for infantry helmets and ochre for the weapons. Nice flat but shaded colours. I do think the results on your wraiths was very good though.
The oils get touch dry in 1 hour, what I usually do is plan my painting so the last step of the day is cleaning the oils with the sponge. That way when I come back the next day they are completely dry and ready to go.
If I were to do the recess shade by hand it would take at least 10 times longer than the oil wash.
The way you painted the Wraithguard heads, I'm beginning to think you're starting to come around on the color blue.
GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
As amazing as they look ... you lost me at airbrush. I still don't have one and they are too expensive to justify getting an expensive one. Emil's claims about $10 airbrushes is BS to be honest as you still need to buy a compressor. Maybe I can get one at some point but, in Australia, that will probably set me back AU$500! And that's not including the paints, thinner, cleaning tools and spray station. Then it will probably be closer to $1000. I can't justify that.
Airbrush skip
Fair
Airbrush...😢
Sorry, each tool has it's uses
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I know. 🙂
Awsome, as always🙂
