Tacchino rises to the challenge of a technically demanding piano part in an occasionally melodramatic but typically idiosyncratic composition which also keeps the chamber orchestra players on their toes. The piece couples barely suppressed energetic drive with more restrained plaintiveness, both qualities, I imagine, lending themselves well to imaginative choreography.
This is the least known of Poulenc's concertante works, which I hope some discover here. (A somewhat neglected piece that certainly merits wider circulation, performances, etc. The piano has a dramatic solo toccata in the first segment while throughout the rest of the piece the instrument's role is obbligato. This is a wonderful performance, and imho it is still by far still the best recorded performance, all the parts and the piece making the most sense.
